If I ever win the lottery, I'm going to offer Scott Boras $20 million to eat a charcoal briquette. I bet he'd do it.

Didn't A-Rod already tell him to fark off?

2008-07-14 09:54:34 AM
Or you could pay me. I'd only charge $10 million, pay Boras $1.99 to eat the charcoal (I think he'd still do it), and retire comfortably.

Unless, of course, you only intend to offer but not pay. . . clev-er!

thomps: the incidence of wives agreeing to anal is expected to skyrocket.

Sigh ... if it weren't for those damned Libs, they wouldn't have to agree.

It was probably more like, "Hey, you've generated a lot of bad blood with the Yankees, and it's clear to both of us that they will give us the best offer. What's say we pretend that I'm acting independently so they'll keep negotiations open?"

i hate this guy almost as much as i hate drew rosenhouse.

I love how people find everyone else in the universe to blame other than greedy athletes.

Yeah, it's Boras's fault that guys want to make a lot of money.

Yeah, and it's hardly his fault they scheduled the World Series Game 4 on the day he was announcing A-Rod was looking at free agency.

How many A-Rod threads are needed this morning? Is he really THAT important?

Dear Gawd:

Please make Jose Canseco go nuts in a post-steroid rage and kill both Scott Boras and himself in a spectacular blaze of glory that doesn't hurt anyone else.

love,

a random baseball fan.

Do you hate Boras because:

(a) he knew teams were salivating so hard for his clients that he held out for huge deals, knowing the teams would pay because they have no restraint (and you're blaming an agent for doing his job instead of a team for not saying "fark that"); or

(b) because he's a pompous ass?

In either case, you wish death on people for either doing their jobs or simply being pompous?

Mostly the pompous ass thing. In your defense, if less owners were idiots and more were like Theo or Billy (and I'm not a fan of either the Red Sox or Athletics), he'd have a lot harder time.

I've seen interviews with Boras and he's flat-out said he cares nothing for the integrity of the game, he's just doing his job to get players the most money he possibly can. I guess I'm just an old grouch who can't stand people who don't respect the game in that fashion.

He'd do it for free. He'd make profit on the diamond that came out on the other end.

I am not a Boras fan, but I definitely think the teams are equally, if not more, to blame for the huge deals. He's definitely hate-worthy for being a cocksucker for sure.

Daniels: Yeah, it's Boras's fault that guys want to make a lot of money.

I wonder about that. Bear in mind most athletes aren't very educated and are sheltered from the rough & tumble of business. That's why they pay agents.

In Boras' case, I assume he's honest with his rates, but he does serve his own purposes. He'll get top-dollar contracts to maximize his commissions but sticks his clients in the most miserable situations with no regard for career. For the most part the athletes lack the autonomy to overrule Boras, if they're not outright intimidated by the guy. Then, once a reputation starts going, all the athletes flock to him.

It's not something I lose sleep over and there are FAR worse people in the world, but don't sugar-coat the asshole, either.

dragonchild: He'll get top-dollar contracts to maximize his commissions but sticks his clients in the most miserable situations with no regard for career.

No, he doesn't. He gets the most money from whatever team will give it to him. If the client does not realize that going to Texas is a bad idea, then I have no sympathy for him.

Boras's job is to get offers on the table. The final decision on where to go rests with the athlete. If he goes to San Francisco and it sucks, well, sleep on your pile of money and get over it.

2008-07-14 02:25:17 PM
Who's sympathetic? I think we agree: "agent" does not mean "career advisor". Athletes are probably getting more money than happiness when they deal with Boras, but if that's the sob story I gotta find a tiny violin.

To sum up, athletes are idiots and Boras is an asshole. But if there's any sympathy in your heart, save it for places like Nigeria or Burma and GBTW.

This. A-Rod and Boras got exactly what they wanted.
