Wow. This could be an interesting debate if my brain started to function today.

I'm thinking the whole "survival of the fittest" debate. prepare thoughts and report back here at 4 pm sharp.

2nd amendment, crazy canadians, and now the inevitable abortion debate (which this WILL turn into)

totally farktastic

2002-12-06 01:07:35 PM
cells are living beings now? is the life of a cell sacred? if so, do you mourn every piece of dead skin your body sloughs off?

2002-12-06 01:07:40 PM
I am not amused.

Hate to think though, of how many times I'll need to reboot when I get the BEOD (Blue Eyes Of Death ).

"Absolutely fascinating"

2002-12-06 01:10:48 PM
Does this mean Kieth Richards won't have to go to Switzerland and have his blood changed anymore?

2002-12-06 01:11:41 PM
Let's make sure we ban any and every form of this as soon as possible or we could be curing 1000s of hard working honest Americans who's only fault was having some really shiatty luck! Did you read the article! It said they're taking 2 year old babies and bashing them on the head with a shovel to cure cows!! That's what cloning is don't ya know? Bashing babies with shovels to steal their brains!

2002-12-06 01:11:48 PM
"The research has not been reviewed by other scientists"

That set off alarm bells. Whenever scientists report breakthroughs to the media before other scientists, I think about Cold Fusion.

2002-12-06 01:11:51 PM
Conservatives not likely to understand ANYTHING about cellular biology.

I have a degree in genetics, they have an extremely old book.

2002-12-06 01:14:23 PM
I guess Bush thinks it is better that the only way scientists can conduct these experiments is to be funded by giant corporations, instead of the federal government.
So that when the cure for cancer is finally found, it will belong to a company, and not the taxpayer.

Hope you can afford it.

2002-12-06 01:15:04 PM
I am all for bashing babies heads in with a shovel. Where can I apply for a job doing the baby knocking?
Save the cows!

2002-12-06 01:15:04 PM
Reboot ("ree-'boot") v; to restart.

Restart ("ree-'start") v; to resume after interruption.

Stupid reporters, trying to make articles sound all interesting. They aren't going to restart any immune systems...

Wow, a privately held firm with a big investment in therapudic cloning released a non-peer-reviewed paper saying that therapudic cloning is good. I am overrun with excitement.

2002-12-06 01:15:33 PM
Now can they clone me a new liver?

2002-12-06 01:15:55 PM
I have a degree in genetics, they have an extremely old book.

That was primo AndrewFish.

SKINK---you're refering to Arcus Senilis, the blue halo around the iris that accompanies aging. No significant consequences.

2002-12-06 01:17:05 PM
Yeah, great work Bush. Privitizing the country is an excellent idea.

2002-12-06 01:17:46 PM
killing kids is fun..but their not kids, because they arn't 'old' enough...

Besides, if it takes 10 kids to cure one adult, that equals out, right?

If your conscience let you, do it. Some of us like to sleep at night.

2002-12-06 01:18:44 PM
i'm all for this. i could use it, my sister could definitely use it. her immune system is all farked up and she can't work.

they'll try to stop it, tho. cancer is a billion dollar industry. if i ever got cancer and this was a possibility, i'm going to another country and having it done. fark this "it's a life shiat." hell, if was to save a family member, i'd get pregnant myself and donate the embryo.

2002-12-06 01:19:02 PM
Time to buy stock in Advanced Cell Technologies...

2002-12-06 01:19:05 PM
Shoooot, if you could take a 4-day-old version of me, melt it down, cure me of every kind of illness ever, and make me live a long healthy life into the 100's of years...

Well, I say lets start bashing those babies brains in NOW!

2002-12-06 01:19:45 PM
Conservatives are only against things that are fun.

2002-12-06 01:20:41 PM
Arming cells with your own DNA, growing a pluripotential cell culture line to aid in your own self-repair should be allowed. This is cloning's gift. I'm for it and I'm arguably the most conservative writing.

2002-12-06 01:20:51 PM
Well, if it came down to it, I'd rather never have the child be born than to grow up unloved, hungry, and improperly raised. That's why I support abortion- because forcing people to be parents who aren't necessarily ready I find to be morally reprehensible, self-righteous, and completely reckless.

2002-12-06 01:20:59 PM

"No."

2002-12-06 01:22:32 PM
Holy wow. But can they clone a new....
ah never mind I got nuthin

2002-12-06 01:22:55 PM
No good can come from this breakthrough. Just watch "The Sixth Day", you'll see what we're heading for
/takes off tinfoil hat

Why do we need this anyway? Won't praying cure all diseases?

2002-12-06 01:24:16 PM
ANDREWFISH, I'm conservative and I guarantee you I know more than cell biologists about the usefullness of this technology.

2002-12-06 01:26:17 PM
Didn't the Borg do that?
Resistance is futile

2002-12-06 01:27:44 PM
Well, the guarantee of a conservative is all I've ever needed!

2002-12-06 01:27:45 PM
I also guarantee you need to use spellcheck.

2002-12-06 01:28:14 PM
screw the pharmaceuticals. i'd rather give my money to geneticists that can actually use my own bodies' properties to help me than some over-priced synthetic shiat that puts the CEO on aruba before me.

2002-12-06 01:28:40 PM
conservative, liberal, if you "define" yourself by any of those words, then you are a whore, think for yourself morons

2002-12-06 01:29:02 PM
Bite me, wannabe.

2002-12-06 01:29:35 PM
I can't wait for the big 180 all the aging rich white guys are going to pull on this, once they realize that cloning research can keep their shriveled black hearts pumping just a few years longer.

2002-12-06 01:31:01 PM
Tadpole
Arming cells with your own DNA, growing a pluripotential cell culture line to aid in your own self-repair should be allowed. This is cloning's gift.

So right... so right.

Secondly, if they were growing babies even a couple of weeks, to the point where it would have started becoming discernable, and not just a mass of cells, then I might have a problem with this. But it's just a few days young, and you can't tell it from any other lump of cells unless you're a scientist. I mean, if you just saw this glob of stuff on the street....

I'm going to hell.

2002-12-06 01:31:29 PM
Wannabe? I got out of health care the moment I realized 80% of my patients would be over the age of 60. Yeck.

2002-12-06 01:31:29 PM
Cool, maybe someday all guys will look like Peter North!

2002-12-06 01:32:22 PM
Tadpole not make sense. Me no understand.

2002-12-06 01:32:59 PM
This could be big if it's the real deal. Once you can replace a defective immune system, there's not many diseases that can kill you.

2002-12-06 01:33:01 PM
It's kind of hard to campaign for the rights of blastocysts.

But then, old people are causing a real strain on our socioeconomic system, with all their... oldness and frailty and stuff. If they can't work (and therefore contribute), is there any reason to keep them alive through their 200th?

"Why do we need this anyway? Won't praying cure all diseases?"

Not any more, it only wins super bowls

Eventually, everyone will own the right to explore their own DNA's potential to repair/transplant themselves, if they can afford it.

Maybe Apple should design people since they never crash or get virii.

2002-12-06 01:37:12 PM
Conservatives not likely to understand ANYTHING about cellular biology.
AndrewFish: The biologists I work around do some interesting evolutionary studies on small scales with bacteria and the like. Apparently, whenever they get to go to D.C. to talk to people, they are faced with 40% of the people simply not believing in evolution, so they call the studies crack science.

Personally, I'd like to know who gets to tell Christopher Reeve that he's never going to walk again - not because we don't have the science for it (we've fixed mouse spinal cords with fancy plastics and stem cells), but because the polititians in office don't believe in science, and are keeping the proper research from ever being performed.
