Dude, Steve & Barry's is the shiat for jeans.

$5 for a pair of jeans that's lasted 2 years working with HCL every day.

SchlingFo:$5 for a pair of jeans that's lasted 2 years working with HCL every day.

That may speak more to your steady hand than the quality of pant you wear. HCL would be a bad choice to test the durability of the fabric.

You know that other company that makes bran muffins? No, the other one... not that one either... okay, yeah, that one... They fired a guy on Tuesday.

/wondering what was red-lit to allow for this gem

I also like Steve and Barry's. It's not the finest clothes money can buy, but for the price you can't beat their pants.

Only been in a Steve and Barry's once. But don't recall any offensive T-shirts. Did I miss some? Or is subby just an asshat?

That's true, but even the few spots where I have gotten HCl on them haven't eaten completely through.

My point was that they sell damn good jeans :)

Heh, and they just opened a store here in Vegas about a month ago. They picked a really bad location too, so I'm figuring this store will probably close really soon. Cool t-shirts tho.

The shirt I'm wearing in my profile pic came from Steve and Barry's about 2 months ago -shrug-
Fits well, looks decent, seems to be wearing well, and was cheap.

I like that store. I've purchased a few things from there and so far i've been pleased.

The shirts aren't particularly clever, but I highly endorse the shorts and cargo pants. I kinda hope they don't go under for good.

Steve and Barry's is my go-to store for clothing right now, since I'm struggling to get through my apprenticeship program. I only have a few more months to go before I get my first raise, then can start shopping at the more expensive places, like Target.

If I find a S&B when I'm traveling, I usually wind up buying an extra large duffel and load it up to take home. With three teenage boys, you certainly can't beat the value. Quality leaves something to be desired, but my kids are still wearing most of the stuff 3 years later (some handed down twice). The best thing is the kids get unique items that you won't ever find here in good ol' Bismarck, and they don't look like every other Sears/Walmart/Kohls kid on the block.

/especially love the university clothing

<b>studebaker hoch:</b> <i>They better still ship my "I airplane New York" T-shirts in time for this years September 11.</i>

I think you're thinking of T-shirt Hell, and if that's the case, that t-shirt has been around since about Nov 2001. They've stopped making it, and occasionally sell the few remaining boxes of stock they have. Which is great, if you want that shirt in an XS pink or M purple.

2008-07-09 06:31:29 PM
You mean when the store is almost the size of a department store, uses floor space in an extremely inefficient manner, spends WAY TOO much on advertising by hiring people that their target market doesn't care about, sells crap, and charges almost nothing for said crap, then they have trouble making ends meet?

What's next? Joe's Match Shop's 10 boxes for $1 promotion won't work?

2008-07-09 06:32:34 PM
Hah, that sucks for them. The store smells more like cheap crap then walmart, it just has that new plastic smell which is odd because they sell mostly clothing. I know stuff costs next to nothing to make in asia, but you have to have a huge walmart or target volume to make $$. I think people don't trust $8 jeans when you can get a pair at another chain store for maybe $15.

batsforsteadman:I was really, REALLY hoping this was about Hot Topic.

Yes, Hot Topic is pretty lame if you buy your whole wardrobe there, but some of my friends who have bands on major labels get their shirts sold there. So while they fishnet stockings and sweatbands are not really my thing, I would recommend buying band shirts there if they have shirts for a band you like, because it's not all slipknot and insane clown posse shirts.

Oh, big surprise.

A clothing store that loses money on the clothes they sell and only scraped by taking paid leases in dying malls.

The only way this company stayed in business this long is because the malls paid them a ton of money to move in.

Yeah, that's sustainable.

The stores were in bad locations for a reason.

2008-07-09 07:32:24 PM
When I first walked into the S&B's that the article mentions, I was amazed at how much empty space they had. You'd think they sold hardwood floor. Not to mention, that particular mall is slowly but surely dying - few customers venture past JCP, the only 'real' anchor they have anymore. So I can't say much for their decisions; opening up huge, empty spaces in dead malls and selling their merchandise for cheap is not a recipe for success. I'm honestly not one bit surprised.

2008-07-09 07:37:38 PM
The only reason these stores existed was because mall owners needed to fill a certain % of space to keep from violating their loan agreements.

Ironically, it's better for them to pay S&B a million bux to move in, fill a huge space with a couple of racks of clothes and claim a lower vacancy rate than it is to leave the place empty.

Fun times.

i really hope it's bad photoshop.. notice how "good to go" doesn't match the ripple in the fabric.
//otherwise, we need to investigate if chris hansen owns stock
// in the company that printed these

They opened one of these in my local mall last fall, and it's pretty crappy most of the time, so I am getting a kick out of this.

I heard tell the image is a photo shop of some photo from a "child model" site. That is a satisfactory explanation for me. Feel free to zoom in on the image, to search for pixels -- you can have a seat over there when you're done.

They left Purdue a few years ago when they failed to get the licensing for Purdue apparel. Damn cheap stuff. Nothing over $20. Sweat shirts, T-shirts, etc.

T-Shirt "Hell" hardly lives up to the name since they stopped selling this shirt:

Well my wife works at an S&B that does a lot of business and makes a bunch of money, so hopefully she won't lose her job.

Why is this news? Never heard of them or it.
Offensive t-shirts? People actually buy them pre-made and no longer make them?

/get off my lawn.

from teh websuck

Q: Do you have a catalog or online ordering?

A: In order to provide the best service possible, Steve & Barry's is devoting all resources to the continued improvement of our retail stores. We currently do not have a catalog or online ordering available.

If you are not selling online how do I know that you even sell at all? Let me know how that works out for you.

The product mix sounds like an interesting concept, but web sales is just a given for a chain, otherwise stick to your Mott St hitw.

OK guys, let me point this out:
The company's most recent addition, launched in May, is a skating and surfing men's collection by Laird Hamilton, a surfer who is married to professional volleyball player Gabrielle Reece.

No pics? You guys all suck.

Why are pretards so obsessed with buying clothing carrying the name of some useless celebrity parasite? do you think these parasites have anything to do with the clothing design other than "i like that color, lets do one like that!"

I love S&B's, me and my gf both spend ~$30 there every month. I got an old school transformers shirt there featuring art from the original 1986 film...rare stuff, couldn't believe they had it!

I'm shocked they are bankrupt, but always wondered how they could afford to undercut wal*mart without sustaining the same volumes and still land huge celebrity endorsements. It seemed like a paradox of low-cost clothing with style and celebrity hype - and indeed it looks like the paradox is unraveling

My wife went to Steve 'n' Barry's with her sister and bought a blouse she loves. After she got home, she noticed the tag referred to it as style code "coont". She laughed her butt off, God love 'er. I guess now there's no point in trying to extort some hush money from them...

I'll try to dig it up and scan it tomorrow.
