Well, if I bring my babies into a place where I know damn well there will be smoking, that'd make it my fault, wouldn't it?

becomes? seriously? your reading comprehension is a little off. the article clearly states that a vote on the measure could be up to two years away

then again, that's about what i expect from fark, so i don't really have a problem with it. just thought i'd point it out

So what you're saying is that if I own the property, I can determine whether or not smoking is allowed there? Because I own my house, and I can own a bar, or a restaurant.

If its not a place of public accommodation feel free.

But if you own the only drug store in town explain to me why you can't smoke at home or outside instead of blowing cigar smoke at babies. Are you that much of a selfish prick?

On the other hand, you'd be perfectly fine if the Bhopal division of Union Carbide moved upwind of you and vented its smokestacks right next to your property line. After all, it's their property.

Your baby was carried to and from the hospital in a vehicle that burns fuels known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and more. You are using a non-RoHS compliant appliance to post this message. Your baby is already poisoned.

"Small countries are allowed to be ambitious," he said yesterday. "If a small country can do this, then big countries will start thinking. Imagine what that means." The government would lose revenue from tobacco taxes but that would be more than offset by savings in the health budget, he said.

Yeah, until the big countries' governments decide that you need to STFU.

Besides, I've seen some talk lately that people who die earlier cost a country's health service much less than people who linger on and on.

out of curiosity, i decided to learn a little about niue

the 'people' section amused me. apparently a lot of basic statistics don't apply to residents there

/note to cia - just because you don't have the numbers, doesn't mean "NA" is the right answer

They have a serious addiction.

BTW, I'll support bans on smoking in public when they ban cell phones in public.

THIS. Honestly, I think a business's owner should be able to determine whether there is smoking there or not. As long as it is clearly posted as a smoking or a nonsmoking business, so that people can choose to frequent the place or not based on preference, then why not?

People that remain healthy until they're 90 years old don't use the health service as much as a person who gets lung cancer and dies at 40.

you guys act like smokers walk up to you and puff right in your face. maybe some do, but for the most part we keep to ourselves, and unless we are a foot away from you, "Second hand smoke" is total BS. enough with the "you essentially inject our babies and old folks with cyanide!!!1!!1!" hyperbole crap

funny thing is. i hate teh whiny anti smoker (like that pussy fake cough crap to demonstrate you don't like it)... but...
after years of solidarity with smokers (many friends and family do -or did, but I don't ) when I finally got my own place with no smokers living with me, my allergy days went down from about 200+ a year to 2 or 3.

So personally, I don't want that shiat around me any more than any of you would want me following you around with my very special brand of Guinness farts (they're frightening at times).

but I let my friends who do smoke light up in my car (the ones i like anyway) and I put up with it in short spurts (like they do with my Guinness farts)

Having worked in medical research I know smoking IS retarded. (but so is drinking, and that doesn't stop me)

2008-07-08 10:48:01 PM
If it's your right to smoke, then I guess it's also my right to give a handgun to a 4-year old and tell 'em to go nuts

This implies that people ONLY get lung cancer if they smoke... which is not true. People can get lung cancer whether or not they're smokers... just like world-class athletes can collapse and die of heart-attacks before they're 30.

YES, if you're taking care of your body, it's true that you are LESS likely to need healthcare. But it doesn't give you an iron-clad out from health problems, no indeedy.

I hate smoking. More than that, I hate smoking bans.

Smoking bans are taking away one person's rights in preference of another person's convenience.

Let's talk about a restaurant, a typical business effected by the smoking ban. Patrons can choose whether or not to go to a particular restaurant. Workers can choose whether or not they will apply for a job at a particular restaurant. If a restaurant allows smoking and you don't like it, you can choose to go to another place.

However, with smoking bans, business owners lose their right to choose whether or not to allow smoking in their businesses. Sure, the non-smokers now have a wider choice of restaurants they feel comfortable going to, but it's at the cost of the business owner's choice.

It saddens me that rights are being abolished for other peoples' convenience, and worst still, that some of these people feel so righteous about it.

Smoking is a right? I could see if they banned people who raised their own tobacco and it has been a part of their culture, but a small island state saying "up yours" to imported cigarettes is hardly big brother.
