(Independent)   Saracen armored personnel carriers still rumble through the streets of Belfast. Instead of armed British troops, they now carry drunk women on "girls' night out." Never surrender   (independent.co.uk) divider line 51

"Their look-out points and emergency doors no longer house British troops with high-powered rifles, wary of sniper and rocket attack. Instead they feature high-spirited young women whooping at pedestrians."

And women still wonder why they get paid less than men.

Yeah, seems a bit understated, right?

Henceforth, the conflict in Iraq will now be known as "The Scuffle" while the Afghan war will be known as "The Discontented Murmurings."

I try. I swear I try but most of these UK aticles are unintelligeble. I spend more time trying to understand what the author is saying than paying attention to the topic. Girls are carrying around cannonballs and getting drunk, fighting tanks?

Broadside:Yeah, seems a bit understated, right?

We're good at that. Monday is/was 7/7, the third anniversary of the London terrorist attacks, yet there's been little more than a brief mention in the press. I don't think the same approach would be taken elsewhere.

Legacy of WW2, maybe. Who knows.

The next time somebody starts talking crap about how the Middle Easterners can't behave themselves, we should remind ourselves that in Ireland, they shot little girls for being the wrong religion, and murdered a housewife for comforting a dying British soldier.

Yeah, the British should get the hell out of Northern Ireland. They have no exit strategy. That war's all about Brent Sea crude any way. Those Irishmen aren't ready for democracy. Heath lied, people died.

Thanks for that reminder, of course I had nearly forgotten that all the violence was Catholic on Protestant.

Bless you but you must have really suffered over there in Glasgow and can I say it's heart warming to see how you've moved on in the ten years since the ceasefire.

If anyone is interested in some material to read about the Troubles. I am currently reading "Shankill Butchers" by Martin Dillon. I finished one of his others last week called "The Dirty War". I recommend them as they seem to be the most unbiased things I can find about N. Ireland. Plus, they are easy reads compared to most history books.

/Tim Pat Coogan's books aren't bad either
// David McKittrick, the author of this article, has covered the Troubles for years and years. Nice to see some of this post-conflict stuff.
