Some conservative should make a fake entry there and be slightly ironical. At least in the context of this thread.

Ok, I hate to risk popping this thread's balloon, but I think Bloody William is not returning because the original screenshot he used to brag about pwning the conservitard site was not his. As one astute farker pointed out, the fur-lynx were for KY, but BW lists Jersey City as his home.

There's a chance, of course, that BW lived in Lou-ville a year ago. Or that he's lying about Jersey City (tho why would you do that? Better to lie about being a furry!). I sincerely hope one of these is the case, because you know, I want to believe. I really really do.

That said, perhaps this becomes like a microcosm of politics: it doesn't really matter why he's Legend. We just like to believe the story wrapping itself around him- Bloody William is Legend.

You may be right, but if it is the case why doesn't he just come in and say it? We're all furiends here, no biggie

True, it would be forgiven, no problem. But a small prank that goes in an unintended direction and self-inflates x600, you really hate to have to come in, head hung and admit you made some of it up.

Curious Hussein:The other thing that bugs me is that it has zilch to do with "civil rights".

The government is granting rights to a certain sector of the population based solely on their sexual orientation. This is no different from previous definitions of marriage being restricted by race. Interracial marriages were also once against the law, and seen by many as an abomination. If you assert that one has to do with civil right while the other does not, then you are being disingenuous, or you are kidding yourself. Saying that a homosexual has the same right to marry someone of the opposite sex is the same as saying that everyone has the same right to marry someone of the same race. It sounds like logic, but it is really nothing more than the desperate rationalization of one whose position is not concerned with justice or the rights of others.

Also, falling back on the old "it has always been thus" argument is just weak. That has been tried as a defense for many irrational and cruel laws in the past which have since been abolished or changed.

OK, I'll take on your...erm...initial....comment (avoiding filter).

Curious Hussein:Government sanctioned marriage has nothing to do with your gay or not gay bedroom predilections. You're way off base to stray into that territory in a debate over the definition of marriage.

Um if it has nothing to do with teh ghey, then why is it that any two consenting adults can get hitched, so long as they aren't homosexuals?

If you come back and say "well a gay guy can marry a woman!" then you lose a point here. The idea isn't to simply get married, but to marry who you want to. Also, tradition carries little weight in civil rights cases. Most civil rights decisions by definition involve stomping all over some precious but deeply bigoted tradition.

I support all the ghey buttsecksers to keep on doing wtf they want in private. I do NOT support government making up new definitions of marriage, which we all know means Man + Woman only. Those ideas are not mutually exclusive at all.

A marriage is a partnership between consenting adults that describes shared property and various legal permissions that you don't share with just anyone. In addition, the favorable tax treatment is nice. Marriage is a legal institution. What you're describing is a wedding, which is a religious ceremony that blesses the union. No one is forcing priests to preside over gay weddings, so that's fairly moot.

The other thing that bugs me is that it has zilch to do with "civil rights". It's perverted, so to speak, to elevate it to that level.

It has everything to do with civil rights. If you could explain your position here then maybe I can retort a little more specifically. At the moment, I'm just going to say "wrong," because there really isn't enough there to cogently address any arguments that might buttress that statement.

Y'know, it would be just fine if you guys wanted to start a pool and sponsor a lifetime TF subscription for me. It'd be a fair trade, since you've all made a banquet out of my dignity.

Okay, coming clean.

I am NOT a furry. I know plenty of people in the community, and my ongoing search for different sources of info have led me into various bowels of the Internet. Remarkably, several of my furry friends (sweet Jesus I wish I was talking about my pet rats) have provided surprisingly good job references.

I don't attend cons or wear Disney mascot suits or write fanfic or anything like that. I know some guys. That is, seriously, it.

I have several other socially inappropriate hobbies I'll gladly admit. Not only am I a comic book nerd like so many Farkers, I'm a rabid toy collector with a substantial collection of G.I. Joes and Transformers.

When I was a teenager, I went to a Star Trek convention. I was so good at the trivia contest I won a signed copy of George Takei's autobiography and a costume pattern for a Bajoran uniform. So I CAN eat up the humiliation, goddammit.

You're all horrible people. But by Grabthar's Hammer, I hold my head up high after this thread!

2008-07-07 11:14:22 PM
dletter:What it comes down to for me is, what is the purpose of a "Legal" marriage. You can talk all you want about what YOU think society should promote, yadda, yadda, but, a legal marriage is basically legally enjoining two people (just so happens to traditionally be a man and woman) with certain legal rights that the legal "marriage" gives them.

Marriages were religiously sanctioned before they were governmentally sanctioned. In effect, the gov't has horned into religious territory by recording and licensing marriages. I'm sure there were really good reasons for that to happen, back in the day. But look at the unintended consequences, as they are now brought to bear in our postmodern era: exactly because marriage has been turned into a governmentally sanctioned thing, now all of a sudden it is a Right! And rights cannot be denied!

That's the view from 50,000 feet, as I see it. There's no unringing that bell, so we have to leave government involved in marriage, period. The ghey marriage thing to me just seems like a fundamentally silly and wrongheaded cause celebre for liberal (I'm not using it as a pejorative) do-gooders who want to, bluntly stated, make themselves seem more important by "correcting" what they perceive to be the flaws in our society.

The "religious" overtones are just that...

Well, no they're not. See above. But please continue.

whatever religious thinking a particular person brings to the term "marriage". They don't, and shouldn't, have anything to do with a "legal" marriage, which is why I am all for changing it so we only give out "Civil Unions" on a governmental level (for any two consenting adults).

You see, look at what we've gotten into with government having gotten itself all entwined into this originally religious institution. You have to twist and turn and make up your own version of history to try to get it to fit. Isn't it all just a waste of time? Are all the other big problems in the world fixed?

Then, the "marriage" word isn't affected for those whose panties get it a twit about that, and all of the same legal ramifications are the same whether it is a man and woman getting a civil union, or two men or two women.

OK, to address your actual point, I agree with you. Really. Have civil unions. Don't call them marriages anymore. As this would represent a gradual retreat on behalf of government, slowly creeping away from controlling the institution, I think it's a fantastic idea. But that's not what I am hearing from Obama or any other candidate. They are, rather, trying to flex government muscle, trying to exert more control over the way people do things. So your idea is, unfortunately, not real.

So, I would be more comfortable, should the residents of my state vote a constitutional amendment to define marriage as Man + Woman exclusively.

Of course, when that is not even acceptable to some people (and you know it isn't), then you know what their real reason they are against it is ("ewww, I hate the gays").

Well, that's not me, and I can't and won't speak for them. I don't know what else I'm supposed to say, but I know from experience that I will never be able to convince some people that being for the traditional definition of marriage is not the same as being filled with some kind of weird, seething hate for buttsecksers. I truly resent getting painted that way, because there are teh gheys in my family that I love and care for and wish nothing but happiness and stable long term relationships for (if that's their thing -- or the lack thereof if it's not).
