The coroner warned: 'It's funny because we are told to drink more water but it's not well-known that you can drink too much.'

/Mortified.

Was this guy too busy drinking water to take a more recent picture?

xanadian:Yup. You can, for reals, drink too much water (new window).

The majority of deaths "caused" by ecstasy over the last 20 years in the UK have actually been completely or partly caused by over-hydration. Of course, that's not the angle the press usually choose to cover them from.

3 things, FTFA:
'Andrew wasn't a stupid man and if he had known how dangerous drinking that much was, he wouldn't have done it.'

Well, maybe he'd have known IF...

and

after collapsing at the home he shared with his mother Alice, 65, and her partner Dave Woodward, 60.

*shudder* Mom and her 'partner'. *jibbly jibbly, jibbly*

Andrew Thornton, 44, died on December 6 last year
So, it takes 8 months to publicize results of an autopsy? Man, the Daily Fail makes me feel GOOD about sensationalistic and yellow journalism.

As mentioned above, drinking too much water can induce psychosis.
/observed the effects once in a middle-aged housewife admitted to hospital psych ward. She tested negative on drug screen; only observation revealed her "water abuse."

Psycho Zombie Monkey:I almost Darwin'd out this way 10 years ago. I was trying to get a job with AT&T and needed to pass a drug test.

Stupidly...after drinking one of the 'clean up drinks' and taking some pills, I decided that more water would help my test results (bad idea).

I drank about 3 gallons of water in about an hour or so. After I failed the test (learned later), I spent the rest of the day pissing out of my ass and feeling like I was going to die.

When will people wake up and realize the dangers of water?? When will someone think of the children??

/thank god for tech companies that do not feel the need to dictate what I smoke

indylaw:Now THAT'S a hardcore suicide.

Much more original than rasor blades, pills-n-vodka, gun in the mouth or jumping off a bridge.

Best part - it's harder for life insurance to refuse payout for water overconsumption.

It's my understanding that clauses restricting the payout of a life insurance benefit where the cause of death is suicide, while once commonplace, are now generally considered void as against public policy.

amanogowa:1. Put snakes on plane:Yes, drinking yourself to death with water is much more sensible than brushing your teeth. 20 years of gingivitis, even in the UK, is major league fail.

This, this this, 100 times this.

Precisely what I came to mention. I mean, how much does off-brand Listerine cost? I'm sure something along those lines is available in the UK without too much damage to the wallet. It's just so easy to NOT have gingivitis.

So, this.

Hatorade:

That kid was at SMU in Dallas while I was there. He was in a coma for three weeks, but didn't die. Made it a helluva lot harder to drink alcohol on campus for everyone else from then on, though. Jerk.

Actually I distinctly remember the kid dying and the pledgemasters getting charged with involuntary manslaughter - It was dateline NBC or one of those shows that covered it. Although I am sure this idiocy has been repeated on campuses all around the country by Dave Matthews/Hootie fans.

FTFA - He had also been drinking at a similar rate for the previous two days as it helped to numb his mouth.

The divorcee thought he was being sensible by refusing to take painkillers and had no idea he was risking his life by drinking excessively.

Um, no.

HOW is this more sensible? Never mind what water overload can do to you, wouldn't a painkiller be faster/more effective then what he was doing?

Dear Friends,

I would like to tell you about a very serious matter, a threat to our national security. The vastness of this terrorist organization is largely misunderstood, as the depths have yet to be fully investigated.

I'm speaking about Water, of course. Water takes on many forms on a global level. Water is responsible for the deaths of millions of innocent citizens through it's genocidal methods called, "Flooding". These breaches into our homeland come in many forms usually known as,"Rain, Sleet, Snow or Hail". From what we understand, water actually CHANGES FORM from a liquid into a vapor at which point it then flies into our air space and reins it's terror. When water wants to avenge us with more deadly methods it takes on the form of a "Hurricane". It partners with the air and destroys the American Dream. It seems to do this on an annual basis towards a less evolved species of humans called, "Floridians".

Don't be fooled, this is an evil world power. Current intelligence tells us that stockpiles of solid water, or "Ice", are in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and are sometimes as large as a continent. The subfreezing temperatures make it a haven for this fundamentalist organization to operate undetected. We have learned of a vast conspiracy to blame Humans for what they call "Global Warming". In reality this is a deadly operation to convert ice into liquid form to then invade us, possibly killing all the Floridians and East Coast residents as well. Water already occupies 75% of the world and it will not stop until it owns everything!

We have also learned through the use of satellites that Water may be acting on the commands from the, "Moon"! Yes, satellite imagery has shown swelling activities that corresponds to the Lunar movements. This is an expansive network with many players.

Some may say that this is an alarmist viewpoint, that water is innocent. I would like to submit for the record the skyrocketing amount of attacks on humans by operatives known simply as, "Sharks". Sharks seem to be targeting Floridians at an alarming rate and also a diverse, intelligent form of human known as, "Californians". Water has been harboring these vicious predators since the dawn of time and it's time we flush them out of their aquatic caves.

Ask Congress to appropriate the funds needed for the "War on Water" and end the murderous methods of this tyrannical body. It won't be easy, but then again, neither is Freedom.

I've always wondered if drinking tea or soft drinks could have a similar effect of straight water.

I've stopped recently, but for the past couple months I was drinking about 1 and 1/2 gallons a day of tea a day. This may have been appropriate if I wasn't sedentary. My kidneys felt quite odd, my heart was starting to mess up when I laid down, and I always felt spacey. My thirst has recently curbed and I am sick of tea (no shiat) so I don't think that'll happen again. The effects have largely subsided. I hope I'm not diabetic or something now.

Painkillers, obviously, would've been better (unless he was allergic). Or, there's always just visiting a dentist and getting a good cleaning. Follow that up with a daily brushing and flossing regimen and I think his issues would've largely went away.

Or don't they have toothbrushes and dentists in Britain?

i hate these 'i won't take painkillers' asshats. a ex had back and neck surgery and refused to take the meds afterwards. she goes back to the doc [i was with her] and gets in his face about the recovery taking so long and its painful and if he screwed it up. he replies after asking a question or 2 because she didn't take the meds she baby-ed things somehow and she screwed up the way things were suppossed to heal or decrease their inflamation. i got tired of her biatching. she'll have a screwed up neck for the rest of her life imho.

"Andrew wasn't a stupid man"

Sorry mom, Andrew was very stupid.

Let's look at the evidence:

44 and living with his mom and her lover.

Ignoring gum problems for 20 years without going to a dentist.

Self medicating with things that are not even medications. Using water and mouthwash for pain killers in lieu of actual pain medications.

Refusing medical assistance when you are stumbling around and bouncing your head off cabinets.

Thinking drinking large quantities of water and vomiting it up for two days is not a sign that something is not right.

What an idiot! We're told he was "not a stupid man" and yet he suffers gum disease and pain for YEARS, doesn't go to the doctor, and continues chugging water even though it makes him puke and pass out? He had to be either borderline retarded or just a plain fool. And why do people think not taking pain killers makes them better or tough?

Not a big loss, I don't think.

I drank a gallon of water in an hour once. It made me feel kind of high, quite a strange sensation knowing it was only because of water. Of course I peed every 10 minutes for a couple hours and, strangely, my gut hurt a lot the next day.

That "strange sensation" was you dying and that "gut hurt" was your liver dying. But hey I'm glad you are still with us.

It is especially annoying when the people who refuse to take painkillers try to come off as self-righteous tough guys - as if they are being all holistic by not taking a pill. Even worse when they push these beliefs on their kids. When my friend was 15 he had his wisdom teeth pulled out, and of course the doctor gave him Atasol 30s. His asshat dad took the pills and flushed them down the toilet, so my buddy spent about two weeks writhing in pain. Why? Because his father "doesn't believe in medication".

Haoie:Is water poisoning [like, overdosing] for real? I just find it hard to believe.

I've transcribed many medical admission notes where people, for one reason or another, drink too much water and end up in the hospital with heart disturbances and mental status changes. They wash out too many electrolytes, like sodium, magnesium, potassium, etc., and you can indeed get very sick.

A friend of mine (who only weighed about 100 pounds) had diarrhea, so she thought she'd "clean out her system" by drinking two gallons of water over about 24 hours. She told me what she was doing, so I went to check on her, and by the time I got there, she was vomiting and delirious, so I rushed her to the hospital. She had heart arrhythmia, and the doctor said her electrolytes were so imbalanced that she probably would have died in a couple of hours if I hadn't stopped by.

Why didn't this guy go to the dentist, if his gum pain was that bad? He obviously must have had bad gingivitis or infections in his mouth to make his gums so sensitive.

Tach:
tweekster:Basically your kidneys get flooded.
It doesn't have anything to do with your kidneys. Even in the article it mentioned that the direct cause of death is swelling of the brain.

It has everything to do with your kidneys.

Put simply, kidneys either dump or reabsorb free water (i.e. water without electrolytes) in order to keep the serum sodium concentration in check.

Now, normally, kidneys are wonderfully capable, and can excrete up to 10-15 liters* a day of free water. Determined or disturbed individuals can exceed their kidneys' ability to do this, and, voila, hyponatremia. Certain medications and disease states can also lower this 10-15 L/d figure, too, so this limit is not one-size-fits-all.

Hyponatremia, caused by exceeding kidney tolerance for free water excretion, leads to all sorts of central nervous system problems. Including death.
