I'm surprised. A legislator (and a Republican one, at that!) who's actually proposing legistlation that might "protect the dignity and sanctity of marriage" that doesn't involve targeting the evil gays.

These are strange times, indeed, my friends.

/Quick and easy divorces are a greater threat to marriage than the gays getting married

From a policy standpoint, if we wanted marriages to both last and be happy marriages we should make it harder to get married.

Also, this type of law is not going to help my divorce business. It might help my annulment business though.

I think there should be a law stating that you have to live with someone for two years BEFORE you can get married. If your religion doesn't let you have sex before marriage, you can get a two bedroom.

Ahhh
Chisum's proposal would allow victims of domestic violence to get a divorce after 60 days.

"After 60 days?" That's more than enough time for a mentally-unbalanced psycho to kill their partner. farking ludicrous.

How does getting a divorce protect you from a psycho?

Hey, back off man, I have a piece of paper and I'm not afraid to use it!

I've largely stopped doing divorces, myself. Everybody wants their pound of flesh, and nobody wants to pay their attorney's fees. Post-dissolution modifications I don't mind, but I don't like the headache of the original dissolution action.

You probably know me. But yeah, getting paid is a problem.

I think the waiting period should be on the getting married part, not on the divorced part. Way back when, the whole "Year and a Day" thing worked - proved fertility and compatibility.

This. Forcing absolutely miserable people to continue to be legally bound to each other and in a position to financially, medically, and in every way screw each other doesn't help the "sanctity" of marriage. Making it harder to get married in the first place would help the sanctity of marriage, but then, in all reality, people would probably just not get married and live in sin. OH THE HORROR!

There's no true sanctity there. Marriage was just an agreement on which families ended up with the most land/sheep/kingdom/pr0n/beer.

Better a 2-year waiting period before getting married, if you want people to "take marriage seriously."

So I'd have had to stay married to the biatch who was farking every swinging dick in sight but mine and planning to kill me? fark that.

Forcing people to stay married is going to result in more Winchester divorces. Not that the biatch doesn't deserve it.

you has the dumbs.

people getting married is good, divorces bad. it's hard enough to find a good woman as it is, after a guy finds one don't make it impossible to tie the knot.

In GA it's 30 days with no required separation. That worked out great for me.

I really,. really hate to quote doctor phil, but you should have to earn your way out of a marriage- not that you should live in the same space and fight it out, but try everything, then quit. Bodily injury earns you out automatically, and of course it should be harder to get married.

If you really want to blame something or someone for the high rate of divorce you should probably point the finger at birth control and gender equality in the workplace.

It was these two factors that immediately preceded the, what is it, 50 percent rate of divorce in this country.

Unlike pre-WWII America, if a woman marries an ass nowadays she is no longer bound by financial concerns to stay with the idiot.

I'm not sure, but I'd bet that statistics would show that most people seeking a divorce are either women or wealthy men.

2008-07-02 02:26:33 PM
How do people like that get elected into office? Let's waste time and money on something that is NONE OF THE GOVERNMENT'S BUSINESS.

Pisses me off.

If I were elected, the first thing I'd do is start taking laws off the books, giving Americans back their freedoms and allowing law enforcement to focus on more important things.

I'm still waiting for the ban on gay divorce.

But no law preventing or slowing divorce will ever go through, between abusive relationships and the fact that it feeds countless thousands of lawyers.

Hmmm, no quick and easy divorces? I predict an upsurge in spousal 'disappearances'...

We have this 2 year wait in NZ. I'm going through it now, and I can't decide if it's a good thing or not. I can say that divorce sucks.

Listen, Representative Chisum, you need to learn something if you're going to keep that job: We don't need a farkin' law that covers every aspect of our lives. Get it? Good.

Necropenguin:Hmmm, no quick and easy divorces? I predict an upsurge in spousal 'disappearances'...

Or they will just do it like in the past. People will just leave and that will be it. No divorce, but there is also no marriage anymore.

The divorce rate really hasn't gone up. The official legal divorce has but the concept of a divorce has always been prevalent. In the 1920's it was too expensive so they just simply parted ways and that was that.

Texas lawmaker reintroduces bill forcing

Yeah, that sounds about right.

Freedom means making everything illegal.

2008-07-02 02:37:40 PM
So, during this two year period the following will happen:

1. Give you enough time to burn through any cash or credit you have.
2. Hide all your money by moving into a single account
3. Have the government tie a rubberband on his peepee to stop adultry (we are protecting marriage here).
4. Use a cork on the vajayjay (see number 3).

There that all works out fine. So how is forcing two people who don't like each other protecting marriage?
