(New York Daily News)   Excuse me, nurse? There's a woman dying on the floor in the psych ward. Oh, it's not your job? Well, what about the security guards who ignored her lying there? Not them either? Okay, well she's dead now, so no rush   (nydailynews.com) divider line 352

This does't surprise me at all. The hospitals in Brooklyn are scary.

I had to take my Boyfriend to the ER this morning and I choose to take him to Woodhull which is just as terrible as Kings is. He had a terrible sunburn from the weekend and he was getting blisters and was in some serious pain.

I would never go there for a life threatening issue. The whole place is dirty and no one working looks like they want to be there. The attendant in the hospital parking lot just shrugged his shoulders when I asked how to get to the ER.

I have a feeling people die in the waiting room all of the time there.

Seriously? Dumb shiat like this is why hospital ERs get so backed up that people end up dying in the waiting room. He should have gone to a regular doctor's office to seek treatment and NOT the Emergency Room. But, in your defense, this wouldn't even be a problem if there were a cream or lotion that he could put on his skin to prevent a sunburn.

If there isn't an unconscious man to fondle and rape, nurses don't care.

The workers at the local hospital left me as triage for the entire emergency room for 45 minutes when i was in emt class. Nobody died so i must have been better qualified then they were.

The Paper Sea - Leslie Fish

I went to work for welfare in hopes to help the poor.
The staff showed me a desk and introduced me to the war.
They warned me that the battle started right outside the door,
And they fought it on the paper sea.

They were thirty social workers, forty-seven clerks,
Twenty-seven managers all gumming up the works,
Three inspectors from the legislature excersizing perks,
Barricudas in the paper sea.

There were countless regulations, rulebooks by the score,
Explaining every policy and system tried before.
The money spent on paperwork left nothing for the poor,
Abandoned on the paper sea.

There were seven hundred forms could be applied to every case
To account for every penny, number, name or date or place.
The clerks were working overtime but never keeping pace
With the waves upon the paper sea.

Why these endless papers, administers, and more,
All to guarantee there was no cheating by the poor,
While for every dollar saved we spent a hundred on the chore
Of adding to the paper sea.

Outside in the hallway, the poor folk had to wait.
The line stretched down the block, coming early, leaving late.
Maybe one poor soul per hour ever made it through the gate,
Past the boundaries of the paper sea.

First came in a man who didn't have a cent.
I filled out twenty forms to guarantee his check was sent.
By the time it reached his address he was gone for lack of rent,
Well serviced by the paper sea.

Next came in a mother, abandoned by her man.
She said, "Get me some daycare, and I'll find what work I can."
But daycare was to controvercial for our family plan.
We marrooned her in the paper sea.

As I walked in one morning, I stumbled on an arm
Attached to some poor body who had clearly come to harm.
While waiting for his Medicare, his heart had bought the farm.
We had drowned him in the paper sea.

I told my supervisor. He said, "Let's be discreet.
Just stick the body out the door and leave it on the street,
And then it's not our problem, but the cop's out on the beat.
Let's dump him in _their_ paper sea."

I tried to make the system work, I tried to help the poor.
I struggled through the paperwork and might have taken more,
But that's the final straw that sent me screaming out the door,
Sent me running from the paper sea.
I'd had it with the paper sea

I worked at a hospital. People came in for sunburn and mosquito bites all the time.

In the hospitals defense I'm sure they were just waiting for approval from her HMO to treat her. Think of the financial impact had they treated this women without their prior approval. Unnecessary procedures cost patients thousands of dollars every day.

On a lighter note, it would appear that the Green family just hit the lottery.

On vacation on the Cape last year, my boyfriend foolishly thought he didn't need sunscreen. After he nearly passed out in a sex shop in Provincetown, he finally realized something was wrong.

When your a straight man who comes close to lying on the floor of a kinky store in P-town, you know you're hurting. He ended up with blisters, but he toughed it out. He wasn't ruining my vacation because he was stupid.

/I tried to get him to the hospital, but he wouldn't go.

I went to the emergency room over the weekend and I can attest how this lack of concern infests the place. I had a broken nail and they made me wait for over an hour before I was seen. I was late to the club because of them. And they totally messed up my French cut so much that I had to use a Lee Press-On nail. I was so embarassed at the club. So I know EXACTLY how this person feels (or felt since she's dead now).

You obviously have never had or seen "serious sunburn". I have gotten it several times and yes I was using SPF-40. My skin just can't take allot of sunlight. The over the counter stuff doesn't cut it in such a situation when you skin is literally peeling off, drying up, and starting to bleed.

Hipchewy1 obviously didn't exact to get her boyfriend helped first, you would have to expect a reasonable wait.

Good catch!

My 6 year old had 2nd degree burns on his shoulder because the YMCA summer camp didn't put his sun screen on. We put it on in the morning but his swim time is after lunch so they are supposed to re-apply it. We took him to his normal doc. The ER never even crossed our minds.

Now putting aloe on him the first night before he went to the doc was fun. I had to pin him down while my wife put it on.

Actually he was in some serious pain. He was screaming. They gave him Morphine and some good pills.

He's the type that never goes to the doctor because he can man it out but when he woke up this morning he was in the worst pain of his life. I know that a sunburn doesn't sound like much but trust me he looks like shiat and was in some real pain.

I've been in there 4 times.

2 dislocated elbows, on separate events.

Once I dislocated my big toe and it needed to be set. I should have just done it my self seeing what it ended up costing me.

Once my Pin site from my UCL thumb surgery got infected. Doc said if I didn't go in I could have gotten a bone infection and nasty things could have happened.

2008-07-01 09:59:24 AM
She probably didn't pay her bills.

2008-07-01 09:59:36 AM
As someone who used to work in a hospital the solution to not allowing non serious stuff to clog the ER is to quit treating everything like a level 1 trauma case.

The kid that has the runny nose and chest congestion has a cold and does not need 70000 labs and 15 x-rays for you to be sure. Give him an anti-biotic and send him home.

I had to go to my own ER one night because I fell asleep with my contacts in and discovered when I woke up I also had pink eye that had swollen my eye nearly shut and the contact wouldn't come out. After blood work and an x-ray they figured they should just flush my eye with saline and see if the contact would come out. After I told the triage nurse "I bet I just need a saline flush but it's Sunday and there isn't an optometrist open so I had to come here." So my ordeal only took 5 and half hours from the time I hit the door.

atomic-age:People came in for sunburn and mosquito bites all the time.

My three trips to the emergency room:

1. Nearly bled out slowly through an ulcer.
2. Found unconscious on the street in New Orleans.
3. Cut the dickens out of my finger.

Ok, I did the last one twice and I wanted to just walk it off both times, but in between the blood spurts I could look in and see tendon. After getting the bills for even such minor procedures, I've decided to just get a home suture kit.
