This is not the intended use of the Florida tag.

Seriously though-don't work there.
The people there are crazy.

I find it hard to believe that any Home Depot would not have a night security guard. How much would that have cost?

EngineerBoy wins, I concur.

Have you ever tried to return anything to a Home Depot before? They act like you are trying to do what this guy actually did.

Ha.
I probably should of worded that better.
My mom works at a Home Depot, not that specific one.

Have you ever tried to return anything to a Home Depot before?

Actually, I have returned quite a few items to them, and never once had a problem. Once I didn't even have a receipt.

/Fairly small town, though, not suburbia.

It's not Home Depot's fault some moran bought the wrong item. Most customers of theirs have the I.Q. which if multiplied by 1,000 might be enough intelligence to tie your shoe. Home Depot employees > Home Depot customers.

i'm going to guess that the next safe they get will have hidden hinges.

was wondering about this too. suspect they used some sort of metal cut off wheel tool. a chop saw would do it but they would need gas. an angle grinder and a lot of time would work.

Nope. Gotta use a recip saw with a tungsten carbide blade - takes care of case hardened steel pretty well, which I think most safe hinges are made from.

(worked at the Home Depot in Livermore after the dot com crash before landing the gig at LLNL - really not a bad place to work)

You're both idiots. DeWalt angle grinder. Accept non substitutes. One of those portable acetylene outfits they sell would also work if the thief knew how to use acetylene without blowing himself up.

One could make a living off of robbing big box stores. Nearly all the floor plans are the same for the year built. Hell, the safe placement can be pretty much known within six inches never walking in the door. Day after Thanksgiving a big box might have $200000 in cash on hand an zero armed security.

It's a good thing I'm a superhero.

2008-06-30 06:43:02 PM
If its set up like most retail stores, they would have had to get through 2 separate alarm systems - one when they entered the building and one on the cash room itself...I'd say it had to be an inside job, someone deactivated the alarm systems.

Gee thanks for the compliment, liter. There's always more than one way to do anything and always more than one appropriate tool to do the job. I personally would use a recip saw because I've found I have much better control with a reciprocating as opposed to a rotary cutting surface, especially when using portable tools.

btw

Liter. Ouch. A sawzall would have you there for a couple of days. A 7 1/2" angle grinder turning 14,000+ rpms would have you done in minutes. One thing I forgot about the oxy/fuel outfits- I think those bottles are sold empty and have to be filled by the consumer. Wouldn't know- I got the big bottles. That's right, I just bragged about having acetylene in my garage.

/Love my XRP sawzall, just wouldn't use it to open a safe.
//Also love those Lenox rescue blades.

Likely not many because whenever something like this happens security is beefed up for a while. A few years ago a Home Depot had a truck just ram through the glass doors and loaded up and drove off. For a couple months they stored pallets of cinder blocks and concrete in front of the doors. Then they quit because it was a hassle.

Sounds like we need to bring in the specialists to resolve this argument:www.mythbustersfaq.com

Last time I was at HD, the clerk had to go get a manager because she wasn't sure if I could use a Home Depot gift card to pay for my merchandise. The manager wasn't sure either. I had to convince them that you can use HD gift cards to pay for HD merchandise. Where's that IQ balance shifting now?

"Thieves break into Home Depot and use display tools to rob store safe" Point of order, subby. This was not a robbery, it was a burglary. Robbery is taking something from someone else by force or threat thereof. They did not rob the safe, they burgled it.
