I think he says 'pears'. He repeats it a couple times and I'm pretty sure that's it.

That show has been beyond excellent. Why can't American sci-fi put out something even half as clever these days? And yes, I know, I know, BSG, which I have certainly enjoyed. but it's sooo serious--at least Doctor Who is able to interject comedy into an otherwise humorless genre.

Wasn't there an attempt to do an american remake of Red Dwarf? And didn't turn out almost precisely as badly as you'd expect?

Nice... and he doesn't break character the whole time. Even when he skirts close to it, he doesn't drop his accent.

BTW, the Housemartins WERE a good band, if you're into '80s British alternative rock. One of them went on to be Fatboy Slim.

Oh, agreed. You should check out Middleman. It's... very whovian in its humor, but also American in it at the same time. A very pleasant surprise in American Scifi and somewhat, it seems, loosely based off of the Who formula (minus the time travel). Yes, I know it's on ABC Family. I'll say without hesitation that it's way, way too good for that network.

mandyer: Soooo, what was the context there?

Some aliens were hunting him, he had to actually physically change into a human being to evade them and store his Time Lord knowledge in some special place (thereby losing his memory).

The Family of Blood episode. Source (new window)

Part of a two part episode in series three. The Doctor has to disguise himself as a human using this device called a Fog Watch. The device keeps all his memories, so he can disguise his biology as human. He makes that video for his companion, Martha Jones, so that she can keep him hidden in the early 20th century (about the time of the start of the first World War).

Leishu: You should check out Middleman.

I love "The Middleman". It's more Adam West "Batman" than it is Doctor Who, but I see what you're saying.

Rose needs to farking die, and RTD is doing his damnedest to annoy me with her.

Yea...the key bit is he had to make this video for Martha to watch and during the scene she is watching it she fast forwards IIRC through from rules 5 to 23 so he need to keep talking nonstop.

Your loss. I would be sad if Rose died, but will be even sadder if Donna met her demise. This is shocking to me, but she really grew on me a lot more than Martha.

Mongra: I would be sad if Rose died

I wouldn't. Her character has been in a constant downward spiral since "Bad Wolf".

Mongra: but she really grew on me a lot more than Martha.

I'll admit, Donna is the most old-school style companion in the new series. I'm really lukewarm on all of the new run companions though. Mickey and Jack were really my favorites, and of course- they basically got shat on and forgotten.

You might also look into Eureka, which is on the Sci-Fi channel. Normally I hate everything Sci-Fi does, on general principle, but Eureka is actually quite good. Not as surreal as Who, mostly, but very enjoyable.

Um...nope. Sorry.

2008-06-29 02:31:03 AM
Great stuff! I wouldn't mind seeing more gag reels on the Doctor Who DVDs, especially the episodes with Jack/John Barrowman; they always seem to have fun on the set.

I actually like Donna in that she's not all googoo eyes for The Doctor like Rose and Martha were.

Which is why I have to watch the episode that aired tonight on the BBC. Not in the US, unfortunately, but I *ahem* have my sources ;)

Ah, that was awesome! Family of Blood would have been my favorite Dr. Who, if it hadn't of been followed up by The Weeping Angles. Fark me those statues freaked me out!

Anyway, please put me on the "Hate Rose" bandwagon. I have no idea exactly what the Dr sees in her. He's got the entire span of time and space to find a companion and he chooses a ditz to get all sappy over.

Yes well, considering Firefly got cancelled (damn Fox) it appears that American sci-fi and humor don't mix so well...

Actually it was a fob watch, but that was just the disguise for the repository of his memories and time lordiness. The device that changed his biological make-up was the Chameleon Arch on board the TARDIS.
