muckin refarkable: neofonz: zeio: If she is so blind, why the hell is she wearing a watch?

They have made watches for blind people for over a century now... they either have flip-up crystals so the user can feel where the hands are pointing or they speak the time when a button is pressed.

/watch collector

And as a former watchmaker who has worked on braille watches, I can tell you, they are some nasty, dirty timepieces. The blind can't see the funk building up in the band and case, but the watches can be down right nauseating.

That never occurred to me. Amazing, the disgustingly weird stuff you can learn on Fark. . . .

zeio: Historically, after the females experienced first menses marriage followed suit fairly quickly. "God blessed them [Adam and Eve], saying, be fruitful and multiply." (Not that the bible represents Yahweh's true words as these were penned by man.)

Hey yeah, and I should be able to own slaves. And disfiguring torture should be used as the penalty for minor crimes. And I beat my wives when they fail to bear me a man-child.

Dude, civilizations evolve, and just because ancient cultures did it doesn't make it good or right or even sane.

My grandfather became deaf in his 20s, and when I was a kid I learned a fair amount of signing so I could communicate with him. I was rather smug about it at the time, since none of my peers could sign.

In 8th Grade, there was a blind kid in my homeroom with whom I became friends (because we shared a devotion to science fiction), and I was amazed at his ability to read Braille books. He could read almost as fast with his fingers as I could with my eyes. I tried to learn it myself and failed miserably.

I think being blind is much more difficult than being deaf.

/sighted and hearing, but a bit overweight

Gnorb: zeio: I say get on with it. Certainly not at 12, but shortly after first menses, get the bun in the oven. There is no good time, there is no right time, but waiting until 30+ can lead you to awful places. Our culture is, in essence, killing us.

Actually, while there are medical issues for having he first child after age 35 (for both men and women), studies have shown that in various species waiting until later to procreate will usually eventually (within 10 generations) lead to an increased lifespan for the species, usually doubling the it.

Our culture may, in essence, be giving our great great great grandchildren much longer natural lifespans.

trying that theory out, I am 37 the wife is 35, we just had our first.

Although I knew a blind woman with a cat named Seymour - he would point out something if she dropped it on the floor.

The same reason I want to enter wheelchair races. But I know I'd get my ass handed to me since most of the wheelchair racers are amputees or have atrophied leg muscles, thus they'll be lighter.
