I sometimes feel guilty for hitting the horn when someone is driving the speed limit in the left lane, but idiots have started doing that while there is traffic in the right lane.

They're letting something stupid into the air around U.S. 264.

Sweet. Does this mean a hypermiler-free drive to Nashville next month for me?

There's two kind of people in this word: Those who exit off 264 somewhere between Greenville and Zebulon, and the rest of us. That first group are the ones who usually are the problem.

This isn't about traffic rules, it's about giving police more excuses to violate the 4th Amendment to look for drugs.

Churchill2004: This isn't about traffic rules, it's about giving police more excuses to violate the 4th Amendment to look for drugs.

There are reasons some states have posted minimum speed limits. Going really really slow is just as bad as going really really fast.

Go Fast Turn Left: Going really really slow is just as bad as going really really fast.

Can I get an amen?

Considering most hwy traffic travels at 5-10mph over the posted speed limit, someone doing 10mph is going to cause a sea of brake lights.

2008-06-25 06:48:06 PM
I always assume that someone that would pull into the left lane to drive slowly is not sober.

Dear Seattle-area drivers,

Farking speed up when you're on an on-ramp for I-5 or the 405. If you did that, I wouldn't have to tailgate you.

Sincerely,

The_Sponge

The above is a good start, but it fails to account for two, three, or four vehicles in the left lane all trying to go different speeds and getting by the same slowpoke in the right lane (usually me).

The problem with you speeding jackasses, is you are all different and think YOUR speed is the speed to go.

farking relax a bit and wait 15 seconds and you will get by. I have never once seen a rotted corpse on the highway because someone didn't get to where they were going due to traffic.

And don't get me started on the assholes that pass on the right rather than waiting for the person in front to get in a safe gap.

If your lack of penis is so frustrating to you that the gas pedal seems like a good outlet, you need to take up shooting puppies or something instead. It's a more efficient way to be a psychopath.

BobtheFascist: Considering most hwy traffic travels at 5-10mph over the posted speed limit, someone doing 10mph is going to cause a sea of brake lights.

One of the few tidbits of advice I remember from my driving instructor when I was sixteen was that, regardless of the posted speed limit, you should drive roughly the same speed as the other vehicles around you on the highway, otherwise you are the problem on the road, not the people going 5-10 miles per hour faster than what the sign says. Drive whatever's safest for your current environment, under current circumstances, (sometimes but not always) regardless of what the signs say.

2008-06-25 06:50:34 PM
The left lane is called the "fast lane," not the "speed limit lane." And "fast" is a wonderfully relative term. Whether or not you are driving fast has nothing to do with your speed but the speed of everyone else around you.

If you live in Atlanta the other drivers will just shoot you for that. There are no rules there other than "Might is right"

Rule of thumb:

If you aren't speeding like a maniac or tailgating, get out of the fast-lane.

I hope people that like to do the speed limit start driving in that lane more. Good times.

Hey, I cruise in the middle.

Makes it easier for people to merge at on ramps, and keeps me out of the truck ruts on I-75.

if only 2 lanes, then I will dutifully stick to the right.

/Odds are, you're not passing me anyway.

I don't consider what I do to people going too slow in the fast lane "Tailgating" so much as I'm actually "Drafting". That way, I can slingshot around you when I get an opening in the middle lane without using as much fuel.

See, I'm not an asshole, I'm saving the planet.

I am really tempted just to copy and paste yesterday's entire thread about this subject into this thread. What more can be said?

But I do agree that the cops will just use this as a revenue raiser.

Kyosuke: Hello.

I came here just to see how long it would take to see you comment. I'm sure a lot of people will be spilling over from the other road rage story in no time.

I can has entertainments?

2008-06-25 06:58:11 PM
Traffic is mainly caused by the presence of at least one of two things:

1) slow drivers not getting out of others' ways. This causes the people behind them to slow down, sometimes for miles at a time.
2) people hitting their brakes. This causes a chain reaction of panic and, suddenly, no one is moving any more.

Fast people don't cause traffic because they're trying to get past it.

2008-06-25 06:58:48 PM
Shadow Blasko: But generally no one has to pass me on the right. I'm courteous that way.

You want to pass the person doing 64 in the middle lane doing 66? I'll be patient. But once you clear them, please for the love of my blood pressure, move back over so I can continue my cruise at 75-80. I will move over as soon as I clear the slower traffic in the middle lane and let the people who want to go 80+ on by. Autobahn/West Texas to El Paso style.

2008-06-25 06:58:54 PM

Sorry, what I meant to post was, "Everyone who drives slower on the highway than I do is an idiot, and when I pass them going 85, I secretly hope they get a flat tire that sends their vehicle careening into a pit full of rancid dog feces."

2008-06-25 07:00:20 PM
Here is my question, is it okay for me to be in the left lane, doing the speed limit (or 5 over, max) if I am making a left turn or exiting left in a mile?

Is there an appropriate distance?

2008-06-25 07:00:24 PM
White signs with black lettering (which is what "Slower Traffic Keep Right" signs are), are regulatory. They are enforceable, and you can be ticketed for not following them.
I don't know why a state Supreme Court had to say this... because it's the case everywhere.

Ever been stopped by a K-9 unit on the interstate because he "couldn't tell what county you're from" with your license plate border "blocking" his view? It's not terribly much fun.

/why yes I'm from TN

I'm with you. I usually stick to the middle lane. Of course, I rarely get passed by anyone... ever. It happens once a month or so, but I'm that asshat that's going 90 in a 55 most of the time. I have yet to get a speeding ticket. (Been pulled over 5 times, and I always get a warning.)

Yes, I know I'm lucky. Yes, I know I will likely get caught sooner or later.

Actually, the left lane is called the "passing lane." People who consider it the "fast" lane are pretty much part of the problem.

2008-06-25 07:00:52 PM
austerity101: Fast people don't cause traffic because they're trying to get past it.

Fast people who ignore the signs that say a lane ends and that they should merge and speed past 20 cars and cut someone off at the last second do slow people down because then someone has to hit their brakes and a chain reaction starts just as you mentioned. People who ignore merge signs should DIAF.

But otherwise I agree, fast drivers minding their own business in the fast lane are hardly the problem.

Yeah, because the constant lane changing does SO much for the flow of traffic.
