Fark You - Fark That?

I have no idea what this acronym means. Google search indicates that it is widely used but gives no clear definition. Perhaps I can ask my editor Rashneesh.

How about greenlighting an article that doesn't try to open three popup windows every time you click anywhere on the page?

Oh hey my home county paper. I love reading the articles online, because no matter what the story is about the comments section is always full of people biatching about mexicans.

And every crime in the police report will end in a musical dance number.

Tough for newspapers all around. The Boston Herald announced they will close their printing press in Boston and have the papers printed in Chicopee, MA. I had to look up Chicopee in Google just to see where it is (near Springfield). Boston is closer to Providence, RI than it is to Chicopee, but that's where the Herald will be printed. I guess the next move is to have the Herald printed out of Gary, Indiana, in order to cut costs.

As an Orange County native, I think this is the best possible thing that can happen to the Register. Perhaps it can be a real newspaper someday with the help of some international input.

I'll bet you've never been able to see porn online because you can't deal with the popups. I'm laughing just thinking about it.

I think this is hilarious. More newspapers should outsource not just their editing, but their reporters to India.

The quality of newspapers would take a big jump.

The Raleigh News & Observer and the Charlotte Observer are basically merging in North Carolina - most of the paper will be written in Charlotte, with a "local" section stuck in for the difference in Raleigh.

So we should let the entire paper fold and lay off the whole staff? Preventing outsourcing won't suddenly create revenue for the business.

If there's one thing I love about Fark, it's the fact that we can add Arrested Development comments to most any thread. BRILIANT!

KeepItMetal: As an Orange County native, I think this is the best possible thing that can happen to the Register. Perhaps it can be a real newspaper someday with the help of some international input.

I don't know how bad the Register is, but having read some of the news articles from India on Fark, and working for a company that has a significant Indian workforce, I wouldn't hold my breath.

A lot of the value of copy editors is their cultural knowledge. An Indian copy editor might be top in his class at the Indian Institute of Technology, but he would not know that (for example) the Angels aren't called the California Angels or the Anaheim Angels anymore; and he might not know the proper spelling of Gov. Schwarzenegger's name; and he definitely wouldn't have a sense of what kind of issues (race, religion, sexuality) have the potential to offend Americans, and what kind of language is appropriate for discussing those issues.

I'm not opposed to globalization and free trade in general, but as with anything there is a point at which it becomes excessive, and this definitely qualifies.

I don't think I've said this on Fark but: good headline subby . Took me a minute.

I used to work there. The paper is owned by Libertarians. They hate the laws that force them to pay their employees. They once gave us laminated cards that basically said as employees, we should be thankful we're allowed to use their facilities, because that gives us training and experience at their expense. Obviously, they were sincere. Libertarians. (spits on ground)
