I'm not out to defend Saddam, but I am also not naive enough to think that we don't use torture to get information. We probably sterilize our broken bottles. Although it does happen, and it is wrong and horrible, it's probably just propaganda to get our hearts racing and to cause hatred towards Saddam.

If by torture you mean feed and clothe them better than they would get at home, then I agree.

Some of those descriptions made me almost retch. I can't read about a torture method without imagining what it would feel like, and none of those felt too good.

The US does not employ these methods for one reason only...they are not effective in extracting info. TSG had a CIA document for torture methods in South America which stated that a tortured subject will say ANYTHING to make the pain stop and not specifically what the torturer needs.

Supposedly, for gathering intelligence the more effective methods are psychological. The threat of terrible pain is more effective than the actual implementation of it. Sleep, food and water deprivation as well as assorted mind farks are what the CIA use..at least according to that document.

The Iraqi methods sound punitive only...that is, not intended to gain anything other than kicks for sadaam. Probably good at spreading the fear around among opponents also.

I also heard that if the US really wants to torture someone they leave it up to allies with no qualms about it (pakistan, israel, columbia).
