Judging by the photo, I'd guess that "don't ask, don't tell" is working better than we originally thought.

Good on you, Army. Finally.

My personal heroine is my great aunt Hattie, who retired a Lt. Col. in the mid-70s. At the time she was the 3rd ranking female in the Army. There was one female Col. at the time and another LtCol with more seniority. Hattie started as a nurse in WWII, and always said it was just longevity that got her to the top. I never quite bought it.

By law women are excluded from combat jobs, the typical path to four-star rank in the military.

Why is it that the military still holds onto retarded policies from the 1950s? I bet there are some women who could kick some tactical ass, but instead their spots are filled by men who aren't as skilled because we don't want to issue combat tampons?

Wasn't that familiar with General Dunwoody, so went to find out something about her.

Wow, are they busy editing the civilian accessible .mil websites removing her bio or requiring a .mil certificate to reach it. Weird. Since it's not readily available to the masses, I give you General Dunwoody, prior to her promotion:

Lieutenant General Ann E. Dunwoody received a direct commission as a Second Lieutenant in 1975, after graduating from the State University of New York at Cortland, and receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education. She earned a Master of Science Degree in Logistics Management from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1988 and a Master of Science Degree in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1995.

After graduating from both the Quartermaster Officers' Basic Course and Basic Airborne School in 1976, LTG Dunwoody was assigned to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. At Fort Sill, she served as a Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Battalion Adjutant in the 100th Supply and Transport Battalion, and commanded the 226th Light Maintenance Company (Forward, Direct Support).
Upon completion of the Quartermaster Advanced Course, LTG Dunwoody was assigned to the 8th Infantry Division as the Community Adjutant and shortly thereafter to the 29th Area Support Group in Germany, where she commanded the 5th Quartermaster Detachment (Air Delivery).

In 1984, LTG Dunwoody was assigned to the Military Personnel Center as the Quartermaster Captains Assignment Officer. Following Command and General Staff College, she joined the 82d Airborne Division where she served as the Division Property Book Officer and then as the Executive Officer of the 407th Supply and Transportation Battalion. She deployed with the 82d as the Division Parachute Officer for Desert Shield and Desert Storm from September 1990 to March 1991. Upon her return she was assigned as the Deputy Chief of Staff, G4.

In 1992, she assumed command of the 407th Supply and Transportation Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, she then assumed command of the 782d Main Support Battalion in October 1993. Following command she attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Her next assignment was as a strategic planner for the Chief of Staff of the Army (CSA). In June of 1996, she took command of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) Support Command. Following command she was assigned to Fort Belvoir where she served as the Executive Officer to the Director, Defense Logistics Agency.

From July 2000 through August 2002 she served as the Commanding General of the 1st Corps Support Command (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, deploying a Log Task Force in support of OEF and the Joint Logistics Command to Uzbekistan in support of CJTF 180. From October 2002 to August 2004 she commanded the Surface Deployment and Distribution Command. In September 2004 she was assigned as the Commanding General of the United States Army Combined Arms Support Command and Fort Lee.

Her awards and decorations include: the Distinguished Service Medal; Defense Superior Service Medal; Legion of Merit with one Oak Leaf Cluster; Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster; Army Commendation Medal; the Army Achievement Medal; the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star; SWASM (2 campaign stars); and the Kuwait Liberation Medal. Her badges include the Master Parachutist Badge and the Parachute Rigger Badge.

This. And the fact that in most combat jobs, we're deployed for extended periods of time with no privacy for personal hygiene and that kind of thing. During Gulf War 1.0, we had a female interpreter that got linked up with us so she could help us talk to locals. So you have an Infantry platoon that has basically smelled like shiat for 9 months, and along come little miss idiot, that had to have her own tent and shower ever three days per Army regulations. I hadn't had a shower in 9 months, and we didn't even sleep in tents. To top it off, coont that she was, she started crying one night about how much she missed her husband. We all tried to empathize until she let out that it had been a whole week since she had seen him - he was in her unit, and they got separated when she had to come work with us.

Anyway, I doubt the rape thing - I know I didn't want to get near a pussy in that particular state of funk, but it's a collasol pain in the ass to have women in combat roles, and the only people who think they should be in combat roles are people who have never been in combat roles.

As much as I generally dislike the whole 'zOMG first woman/minority/whathaveyou to do X' thing since it detracts from the simple fact of having accomplished X, the military represents a very unequal playing field with regards to gender (and with government backing, no less...). For someone to be considered for a ranking usually reserved for those with combat backgrounds while having been automatically precluded from combat for nothing other than the sin of matching chromosomes is a pretty cool thing.

Not all women are petite and frail. But, hey, since quite a few of them are, we should totally just not allow the ones who aren't to prove themselves, ever. I mean, this Dunwoody chick sure looks like a fainting violet, doesn't she?
And, hey, while we're painting entire genders with a single brush, since apparently some men are rapists, let's castrate the lot!
