Whoa! Very cool! For a while the scientists thought giant squids might only be a myth or a rumor. Be glad these things aren't agressive though. They are definately capable of bringing down boats the size of yachts.

Let me be the first to say, "That's a big farking squid".

Ha.. I thought that thing said, 'had it's testicles complete.'

2001-08-15 01:41:28 PM
Wow. That is an ugly, ugly animal.

2001-08-15 01:42:40 PM
In a related story, Fishermans Wharf is announcing a big sale on sushi.

2001-08-15 01:42:44 PM
That was big, but they get much bigger. I saw a video on the Discovery Channel where this fishing boat caught one that was about 30 feet long - about three times the size of this little guy.

They sure as fark are ugly, though.

there was a cool program discovery this weekend about researchers trying to observe a giant squid, in New Zealand. They failed miserably, of course. I had no idea they weighed 80 kilos though...wow.

on a related note, I was in Seoul with a friend recently for a wedding. We were waiting in an atrium while the bride got all dolled up, and a hostess brought us some snacks. The bag looked a bit like bugles, so we dug in. after the first bite, we both knew something was horribly wrong. upon further inspection, they turned out to be squid flavored chips. yuck

2001-08-15 01:48:48 PM
Still nobody has ever managed to prove observing a living specimen... next to nothing is known of these creatures... they don't generally spend much time in shallow waters.

The Discovery Channel has had a couple of extremely good programs on the subject...

That's a calamari that would feed the entire cast of the Sopranos for a week.

2001-08-15 01:58:12 PM
Tony'd be able to wear a slice of that calamari as a belt.

2001-08-15 02:02:05 PM
In the words of the imortal Homer Simpson...
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm calamari

2001-08-15 02:03:22 PM
Mmmmm... Calamari!

But I bet a squid that big would taste like ass. You have to go for the young ones.... they compact all that taste into a bite sized morsel

2001-08-15 02:08:05 PM
Here they are later milking it.

2001-08-15 02:15:27 PM
What was the point in killing it? Did it have a bigger penis than the scientists or something?

2001-08-15 02:18:11 PM
RED ROCKET! RED ROCKET!

2001-08-15 02:20:45 PM
Amorphis: I lived in Korea. You should have tried the squid jerky...mmm mmm good.

2001-08-15 02:29:31 PM
It was dead when it was caught, about 5-6 Giant squid a year get caught in fishing nets.

2001-08-15 02:36:16 PM
WorldCitizen: heh, no thanks. I went out drinking with about 12 koreans one night, and they got what looked like squid jerky... the squid was about a foot long tho. I stuck to the other, more normal appetizers. The beer was crap (I like good stout ales), but I really liked the soju and the bekseju.

I do like deepfried calamari tho

were you stationed there?

2001-08-15 02:38:51 PM
Soju is great stuff.... especially with kimchee.

Mmmmmmmmm.....

2001-08-15 02:44:32 PM
Man that and a bucket of lemon juice, and I'm set for a while!

2001-08-15 02:45:28 PM
Awww GOD that's ugly.

How hungry would you have to be to eat something that looks like that?

2001-08-15 03:06:11 PM
Well... for one thing-
the reason it is ugly is because it has been dredged up from the depths in which it lives. It would need very little pigment at such depth.

For another, it is certainly not "fresh out of the sea" in that photograph. It was caught in the MIDDLE of the Atlantic.

More info:
-yes, they do get MUCH larger than this... especially off the coast of New Zealand.

-they probably ARE quite aggressive in their natural habitat. Squid are predators and would need this agression to feed.

-no, of course they cannot bring down a yacht... or any other boat.

They have been catching these things (and finding them washed-up ashore) for years. But yes... even after careful expeditions to the fact... they have never been seen (and thus filmed) alive in the depths of their natural world. Here, they would likely be amazingly gorgeous animals.

Ok, I will shut up.
;-)

For a while the scientists thought giant squids might only be a myth or a rumor.

There's been documented giant squids for a while now, I remember seeing photos from about the 20's or 30's. Check out the unmuseum's piece on giant squids.

2001-08-15 03:16:43 PM
No, I wasn't stationed there. I've never done the military thing. I was just working/living there. There were times when I was almost jealous of the military though...they were actually surrounded by other people who spoke English and had access to all that Western food. But then again, it was good to get away from my fellow Yanks for awhile. It gives you a little better perspective.
And soju rocks. Hard to find in the States though.

Korean maekju (beer) sucks. It tastes like Miller Lite.

2001-08-15 03:23:55 PM
i wonder if they poked it with a stick?

2001-08-15 03:29:21 PM
They got one with 4" tentacle suckers that was 35 foot long.
But they've found whales with 18" sucker scars on them.
Now, that is a farking big squid.

2001-08-15 03:36:40 PM
Damn, that's one ugly bastard. Shame about the tentacles getting chopped up, too - that's the best part.

I have a sudden urge to deep-fry.

2001-08-15 04:02:34 PM
Demos-They live in extreme depths of the water, and are very sensitive to light; thus any deep sea vehicles immediately drive them away.

I swear, there's a LOT more in the sea that people know. The dolphins, man, they're the key to learning more about the ocean.

2001-08-15 04:13:15 PM
Shiver me timbers! AAAARRRRRR! That be one big squidy me mates! Aaaarrrr, like the one that be taking me favorite leg, arrrr she be a fiesty one, that she be! Arrrr the sea it be like a mother of all things, ye get the things that ye want and big freaking scary ass hug momma mia Squid that ye don't ever want!

2001-08-15 04:48:23 PM
That picture does not help my squid-phobia. Neither did that Cthulu thing that washed up somewhere a few weeks back. And that 18" sucker-scar thing has left me more scarred than the whales.

I was not impress I was thinking more along the lines of a 100 foot beheamoth or somehting

2001-08-15 06:50:54 PM

Here's another squid, looks bigger? But it kinda looks like the same squid at the same time

2001-08-15 06:51:34 PM
On second look, i think it is bigger?

2001-08-15 07:08:17 PM
Since giant squids were never observed alive, that means they have never attacked any boats... that we know about!

Mwahahahaha!

2001-08-15 07:23:35 PM
I wonder if it's stinky.

2001-08-15 07:33:48 PM
Why did they kill it and chop it? Just because he is not the prettiest of things, hell, half my x-es, didn't look as good, and I didn't chop them!(Shoulda though)

2001-08-15 08:02:23 PM
I got a big fat squid in my refrigerator. OOOO. OOOO.
I found him in the frozen foods,
I bought him five new pairs of shoes,
And now he lives in my refrigerator.-Grape Ape from "The Brak Show, Starring: Brak.

On a more serious note: Calamari for everyone!!

2001-08-15 08:25:28 PM
He was dead when they caught him PrincessofPower. A giant squid has never been seen alive in its own habitat. And no doubt the tenticles were ripped off when bringing it in or the cut them off because they couldnt be bothered hauling that things huge tenticles 100s of miles back home.

"There is a squid in the refridgerator....it has an expiration date of August and it is behind the tamagoyaki....it is from the August of last yeee-ar, so it is probably baaaddd...."
-- Hooligan's cello song from
the 1st Hooligan episode of
Digi Charat

And that's all I have to say about that, nyu.

2001-08-15 10:48:13 PM
One time I killed a giant squid. I wore its tenticles as a hat through three galaxies.

Oh yeah, it was not the squid who have been making all the aircraft, ships, etc. disappear in the Bermuda Triangle. I am afraid I have to confess that it is me. We've been doing it for years, but I am trying to cut down.

You will all pay dearly for what you do to my precious children, puny humans. You too, Xenu-squid-hat-boy.

2001-08-16 12:05:46 AM
Why cant we all just be happy in this galaxy?

2001-08-16 03:09:29 AM
Actually the giant sucker scars on the whales are thought to be small scars that expanded along with the whale as it grew, squids probably aren't that massive. Not that anyone knows, its just a theory, I think a damn huge ass squid chomping holes in a whale is a cool idea.

2001-08-16 05:20:02 AM
the pictures are fake, no squid that big exists
i don't believe in dinosaurs either.

2001-08-16 05:55:19 AM
WorldCitizen: I lived in korea for a couple months but I'm a minor so I couldn't drink there. Damn that kimchi was good though

Thank you Mr. Happy!
A little food for thought, I was watching National Geocraphic, where for the first time ever, they captured the mating rituals of squid on camera.I was S-H-O-C-K-E-D! If you can picture this...
1 female, getting it on with a male, when along comes another... and sprays her! Yep, trying to cool them down I guess. Shortly after, a third male comes and literally "Tags" her, while she is still with #1, in a split second, while #1 is pulling out, #3 in the blink of an eye gets his piece. DNA results showed all three males as the father, and it is still unclear to scientist wether 3 males is essential in the matting process, and whether the semen the female is exposed to while being sprayed is swallowed, or finds a way inside her.
Thanks for letting me share, this still haunts me.
