I Don't Want To Fight - It's Christmas by the Ramones
Christmas at Ground Zero by Weird Al Yankovic

Any others I could think of have been mentioned (if these already haven't).

Also, if anyone even suggested that damned "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer," they should be banned from Fark for life. And sterilized. I'm not kidding.

There've been some really super ones mentioned, but here's a few more (a couple that have been mentioned but I feel the need to stress them a little more):

Elvis - Blue Christmas
Chris Cornell with Eleven - Ave Maria
Harry Connick, Jr. - Ave Maria and (It Must Have Been Ol') Santa Claus)
Buster Poindexter - 'Zat You, Santa Claus?
Sesame Street - The 12 Days of Christmas (a brilliant Sesame Street version, in which Bert sings "Fiiiiive Argyle Socks," and Snuffleupagus forgets what Number Twelve is)

2002-12-01 06:47:37 PM
I have to go with Fear and 'F*ck Christmas', surprised that no one mentioned it, although I bet Bad religion must have covered it.

LEONARD COHENS "HALLELUJAH" AS PERFORMED BY JEFF BUCKLEY. I defy anyone to name me a more beautiful song--from the 90's--than this, im serious please check it out.

Oh, almost forgot: Tom Waits' "Christmas Card From a Hooker In Minneapolis" off the 'Blue Valentine' album.

also didn't see Merry Xmas (I don't wanna fight tonight) from the Ramones Brain Drain album

2002-12-01 07:00:54 PM
If you get to know Cohens version first it makes Buckleys all the more powerful.

HALLELUJAH

I heard there was a secret chord
that David played and it pleased the Lord
but you don't really care for music do ya
Well it goes like this the fourth the fifth
the minor fall and the major lift
the baffled king composing hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
you saw her bathing on the roof
her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
she tied you to a kitchen chair
she broke your throne and she cut your hair
and from your lips she drew the hallelujah.

Hallelujah,hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
You know, I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
and love is not a victory march
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah,hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Well there was a time when you let me know
what's really going on below
but now you never show that to me do ya
but remember when I moved in you
and the Holy dove was moving too
and every breath we drew was hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Well maybe there's a God above
but all I've ever learned from love
was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
it's not somebody who's seen the light
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah

Doesn't anybody like the traditional Christmas tunes anymore. Almost every post here goes like this:
"My favorite Christmas song is some obscure titled tune no one has ever heard of by an artist that makes me look totally hip!"

I like Jingle Bells and the Halleluhah Chorus, I guess I'm not cool.

Um.

Did you even read the headline? The guy wants suggestions for OBSCURE and OFFBEAT XMas songs, not the same old same old. THAT'S why everybody's posting this stuff.

Honestly, seems Farkers can't even read the headline anymore, let alone the article.

BTW, I'd just like to say that you guys have inspired me to create a "Comedy Christmas" CD and an "Anti-Christmas" CD. Thank you all very much.

As for songs, the only ones I could really suggest are Spinal Tap's "Christmas with the Devil" and Type O Negative's "Red Water (Christmas Mourning)", and both of those have been suggested to death, so oh well.

2002-12-01 07:07:10 PM
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'LL GET THIS FAR DOWN READING ALL THESE SUGGESTIONS, BUT *TRUST* ME ON THIS ONE.

THE CHRISTMAS SONG YOU HAVE TO GET IS BY AN AUSTRALIAN ARTIST NAMED PAUL KELLY. THE SONG IS CALLED "HOW TO MAKE GRAVY" AND IT'S ON HIS ALBUM "WORDS AND MUSIC" AS WELL AS HIS GREATEST HITS COLLECTION.

IT IS POSSIBLY THE GREATEST CHRISTMAS SONG EVER. JUST AN INCREDIBLE AMAZING TUNE.

How could we have forgotten Elvis!!!
I must bang my ahead against the wall in shame.

elvis impersonator, that did mostly led zeppelin songs)

Also Add:

Root Boy Slim -- Christmas at K-Mart
Features the line "this must be heaven,
Cause hell is christmas at the 7-11"

How To Make Gravy
by Paul Kelly

Hello Dan, it's Joe here, I hope you're keeping well
It's the 21st of December, and now they're ringing the last bells
If I get good behaviour, I'll be out of here by July
Won't you kiss my kids on Christmas Day, please don't let 'em cry for me
I guess the brothers are driving down from Queensland and Stella's flying in from the coast
They say it's gonna be a hundred degrees, even more maybe, but that won't stop the roast
Who's gonna make the gravy now? I bet it won't taste the same
Just add flour, salt, a little red wine and don't forget a dollop of tomato sauce for sweetness and that extra tang
And give my love to Angus and to Frank and Dolly,
Tell 'em all I'm sorry I screwed up this time
And look after Rita, I'll be thinking of her early Christmas morning
When I'm standing in line

I hear Mary's got a new boyfriend, I hope he can hold his own
Do you remember the last one? What was his name again?
(Just a little too much cologne)
And Roger, you know I'm even gonna miss Roger
'Cause there's sure as hell no one in here I want to fight
Oh praise the Baby Jesus, have a Merry Christmas,
I'm really gonna miss it, all the treasure and the trash
And later in the evening, I can just imagine,
You'll put on Junior Murvin and push the tables back
And you'll dance with Rita, I know you really like her,
Just don't hold her too close, oh brother please don't stab me in the back
I didn't mean to say that, it's just my mind it plays up,
Multiplies each matter, turns imagination into fact
You know I love her badly, she's the one to save me,
I'm gonna make some gravy, I'm gonna taste the fat
Tell her that I'm sorry, yeah I love her badly, tell 'em all I'm sorry,
And kiss the sleepy children for me
You know one of these days, I'll be making gravy,
I'll be making plenty, I'm gonna pay 'em all back.

Gary Hoey- 12 days of Christmas
AC/DC - Mistress for Christmas
Cheech & Chong - Santa Claus and his old lady

No Doubt's cover of "Oy to the World". I love it

2002-12-01 07:15:57 PM
Fairytale of New York by the Pogues is great!!!!Also you gotta check out Christmas in Prison by John Prine. And for more mainstream tastes Santa Claus is Coming to Town by Springsteen or I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus by John Mellencamp. Otis Redding did a bunch of really, really amazing Christmas songs which I highly suggest.

Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Christmas Time
Barenaked Ladies - Christmas Time (Oh Yeah)

Haven't seen these ones yet. They're on my xmas mix tape.

>"Christmas Eve Sarajevo 12/24" and "A Mad Russians's >Christmas" both by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

I agree wholeheartedly with that, "A Mad Russians' Christmas" seriously rocks. I guessed Metallica with an orchestra the first time I heard it. They played it on the local hard rock station, who knew? The "Stairway to Heaven" of Christmas music. Powerful stuff.

Some of you people really know some obscure stuff, sheesh.

Hey Suburban Cowboy... I think Vince Vance and the Valiants all died in a highway wreck back in the mid-80's. I remember reading that somewhere. Can anyone help out here?

2002-12-01 07:28:57 PM
Search for Local H's "Disgruntled Christmas". The lyrics are as follows:

And it's me, the man with no personality
Burning down your Christmas tree
Blowing up bombs in the shopping malls
Mistletoe is going to fall
Taking shots at the caroling crowd
Stupid songs sung way too loud
And they're getting dumber all the time

I really don't see why you should spare your friends
Since I really don't care if I ever see them again
You say shopping spree
I say killing spree

And I can think of Christmas past
Like the Christmas before last
Cousins,
Uncles,
Aunts
And how can I forget or care
That all I get is underwear
I'd like to beat you on the head with that old Yule log
Giving an napalm gift gives you a glow
Something to burn away the freezing snow
If you just let me
and I'll be glad to tear your Frosty down

I think Christmas really sucks
I think Christmas really sucks

I really don't see why she'd spare your friends
Since I really don't care if I ever see them again
You'll be sorry
That you ever lied to me about Santa Claus

I'd have to second "Shouldn't have given him a gun for Christmas" by Wall of Voodoo.

My favorite albums from last Christmas were "Bummed out Christmas" and "Hillbilly Holiday" which are both on Rhino Records.

Favorite songs include:

Christmas in Jail - The Youngsters
Somebody Stole my Santa Claus Suit - Christmas Jug Band
I'm Gonna Lasso Santa Claus - by a young Brenda Lee
Daddy's Drinking up our Christmas - Commander Cody

I hate Christmas songs! They are sooo sh*t it makes me wanna puke!

2002-12-01 08:12:35 PM
Connor Oberst, better known as Bright Eyes (or as the lead singer to Desaparecidos), just put out a Christmas album thats supposed to be phenomenal. I dunno what you're looking for, but he's good enough to bridge genres for most people.

2002-12-01 08:16:33 PM
On the classy end of things:

Over the Rhine - The Darkest Night of the Year (album)

On the opposite end of things:

Spike Jones' version of the Nutcracker Suite

(You could throw ELP's piss-take called "Nutrocker" in there, too)

Has Extreme Elvis ( www.extremeelvis.com ) done a version of Blue Christmas yet? That'd take the cake.

And, somewhere in the middle of the spectrum:

The Flaming Lips - Christmas at the Zoo (as well as a fairly rare demo of White Christmas

Dweezil Zappa's version of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" from his album Automatic, clearly rules.

Arlo Guthrie's "The Pause of Mr Claus" is priceless.

2002-12-01 08:17:21 PM
COLDPAY - HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE X-MAS

2002-12-01 08:19:38 PM
Arlo Guthrie's "A Pause For Mr. Claus", if you can find it. (And if you can, send me an MP3.)

"Santa Claus wears a red suit,
he's a communist.
Long white hair and a beard,
must be a pacifist.
What's in that pipe that he's smoking...?"

"Santa Claus sneaks in your
house at night..."

Now that my brain's working, there are also a couple of XTC christmas tracks off "Rag and Bone Buffet", and if I can get hold of a recording of "Blue Christmas" as performed by Sting and Billy Connolly when they were on the Parkinson show, that goes on my compilation too.
