(Some Guy)   Help a fellow farker put together a Christmas CD. I'm looking for something a bit different, so stay away from the standards unless it's an outstanding, obscure cover (voting enabled)   (thefab.net) divider line 337

Doesn't anybody like the traditional Christmas tunes anymore. Almost every post here goes like this:
"My favorite Christmas song is some obscure titled tune no one has ever heard of by an artist that makes me look totally hip!"

I like Jingle Bells and the Halleluhah Chorus, I guess I'm not cool.

Cheech and Chong - Santa Claus and His Old Lady... maybe the funniest Xmas song ever! Many of the references in the song are no longer relevant to younger listeners (I played with that cat at the Fillmore man!).

The Whirling Dervishes - You're a mean one Mr. Grinch... the guy's voice is a deadpan for Boris Karloff's - a can't miss track!

BBD

I'm not stylish or irreverent...so take my two cents' worth with a grain of salt. I like pretty stuff. But I will second the earlier mention of Bruce Cockburn's "Coldest Night of the Year" and Amy Grant's "Breath of Heaven". I'll also add Chris Rice's "Welcome to Our World". And, as a songwriter, I'd be remiss if I didn't invite you to visit TheTunesmith.com and check out "Feels Like Christmas" (lyrics by Dan Gray, music by
me).

Someone may have mentioned it, but I don't think it's fair not to include the top-selling song of all time by any artist: Bing Crosby's version of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas".

2002-12-01 05:46:16 PM
"Santa Claus is smokin' reefer" by the Squirrel Nut Zippers.

2002-12-01 06:02:25 PM
I've been collecting odd Xmas songs for a few years.

My all time favorite is probably "Shouldn't Have Given Him a Gun for Christmas" by Wall of Voodoo. It was originally released on Just in Time for Christmas, which is long out of print (shame too, because it has all sorts of old IRS bands like Clark Kent, the Squeeze and Timbuk3). Anyway, you can now find the song on New Wave Xmas from Rhino records.

There's a new album out this year from Nettwerk called Maybe This Christmas, which is alright but not great.

The first couple of A Very Special Christmas releases were cool, but they've gone downhill recently.

There are also a couple of decent electronica tracks on Streetbeat Records' Acid X-mas, but most sound like piss.

Good luck!

Butch the gay Santa Claus - Cherry Poppin' Daddies

2002-12-01 06:04:06 PM
No one has mentioned,

Red Peters - "Holy shiat, It's Christmas!"

A Must have on any Xmas CD.

And here's the first photoshop!

2002-12-01 06:05:40 PM
OK, I actually am one of the few farkers who know about these two Xmas albums:

Christmas in Heaven - Various Artists: features the most disturbing Xmas song ever, "Christmas Wishes" by Backwoods (Argyle Park/Circle of Dust-related side project), the original version of Sixpence None the Richers cover of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" and some other really great stuff....it was essentially a ton of obscure Xian modrock acts doing very non-traditional Xmas songs...one that never made it was Klank's cover of King Diamond's "No Toys for Christmas."

Noel - Various Artists: the BEST version ever of "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" and a song I've never heard elsewhere called "Carol of the Birds" (No, it's not Carol of the BELLS). Phenomenal album!

Ooops...here:

As for my own suggestions:

Fairtytale of New York is an excellant song. (that's where the link goes) The language is a bit colorful so you can't exactly play it at the office Christmas party, but it's a great song

Vince Guaraldi's soundtrack from A Charlie Brown Christmas is all good.

If We Make Through December by Holly Cole is a great cover of the Merle Haggard song. I just did a search for it on Kazaa and it didn't come up, so I'll upload a copy if anyone wants it. It should be up in couple of minutes.

2002-12-01 06:07:30 PM
Let's try that again:

2002-12-01 06:08:15 PM
Bad Religion - "F.uck Christmas"

2002-12-01 06:08:15 PM
X-Mas on the Isthmus by Terry Allen

Stayed up two more days, just to make sure"

2002-12-01 06:08:44 PM
Pinkard and Bowden--Let's put the X back in Christmas
Bill Monroe--Footprints in the Snow
and
Ding Fries are done

2002-12-01 06:10:43 PM

2002-12-01 06:10:48 PM
"Nothing For Christmas" by the Reducers (www.thereducers.com)

or any of the John Fahey Christmas recordings.

2002-12-01 06:18:04 PM
My collection includes:

Merry Axemas volumes 1 and 2
The best guitarists in the world play tasteful instrumental Christmas songs. Highlights include Zakk Wylde's astonishing "White Christmas", Steve Morse's incomperable "Joy To The World, Kenny Wayne Shepherd's "Rudolph", and Steve Vai's smoky jazzy "Christmas Time Is Here" (from Charlie Brown).

Gary Hoey- Ho Ho Hoey volumes 1,2, and 3.
Another great guitarist doing instrumentals. Every track is a different style of guitar. Metal, blues, classical, bluegrass, etc.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's Christmas cd.

and some other gems include:
The Screaming Santas: Christmas music hairband-style!

Spinal Tap's Christmas With The Devil
I think it's Bob Rivers who does "I Am Santa Claus", a song about santa sung to the tune of Black Sabbath's Iron Man.

A couple of years ago, somoene did a DEAD ON parody of Judas Priest singing "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" sung to the tune of their "Heading Down The Highway". It was perfect!

All the Kevin & Bean Christmas cd's are hilarious, but theo ne that stands out in my mind is "Christmastime in the LBZ" with Snoop Dogg.
