I can't even find it on TV anymore. It, like Showtime at the Apollo and Grand Ole Opry, get respect for their history, but the shows are essentially dead and nothing like they once were.

Bits:

1) Loved this show.

2) Don Cornelius is/was the badassest motherfarker to ever host anything on TV that was hostable.

3) Favorite Don Cornelius moment ever, though, was when he was in the booth at Wrigley talking to his pal Harry Caray during a Cubs broadcast.

4) They used to run this show on Saturday afternoons when I was little, not too long after they'd air American Bandstand, which just made AB look that much dorkier. It's like how they package Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy back-to-back.

5) Over 35 years later and I still have no clue what Afro Sheen does.

not as bad as jheri curl juice, though.

I used to watch Soul Train all the time when I was a kid. To those of us from small-town Iowa, it was pretty exotic.

It ran for 37 years and there is only 1,100 hours of broadcast? That seems a little off. Wasn't the show an hour long?

I loved him in "Planet of the Apes"

First thing I thought of was the SNL skit with Belushi as Samurai Hitman, who was contracted to whack the two Dons: Cornelius and Kirshner.

Too bad I can't track down the video.

Soul Train was ok, but it wasn't fit to pick up The Scene's dirty socks.

That is precisely what I was thinking. Who hijacked the missing Soul Train?

I loved this show back in the day.
It's probably the reason I gots soul today
Thank you Don, for education on Saturdays...

My favorite part of watching this was to locate the token "white guy who thinks he can dance (but can't) that we let in to make everyone around him seem that much cooler". There was almost always one.

Back when videotape was a lot more expensive (and harder to store) than it is today, it was pretty common practice to tape over old show footage - no one really thought that the show might have historical value, and like I said, videotape and warehouse shelf space didn't come cheap.

Quite a few Doctor Who episodes (pops) befell the same fate in the 60s and 70s. Folks are *still* trying to find bits and pieces of those.

Whew.

Two Things:

1)The hot Asian girl with the long hair who was an awesome dancer. Wow!

2)The hip clothes that the dancers would wear on the show.

Turn on WGN at 1:00 central on Saturdays and you're in for a real treat.

Not really, it's no where near as good as it used to be back in the day...now it's mostly one big long commercial.

I don't think there is any missing "Soul Train" episodes.

Just some math... 52 weeks in a year * 37 years = 1924

That means if they didn't take a week off there would 1924 episodes.

Now, an hour slot on TV is really about 40-45 minutes of show.

so... 1924 * .75 = 1443 hours.

We are looking at a max of 1443 hours.

They have 1100 hours of tape: 1443 - 1100 = 343

343/.75 = 457 episodes 457 / 37 = 12 weeks worth a year.

1100 hours of soul train = 40 episodes a year.

I think that's probably all of it or damn near close.
