Yes, because it's so cheap to eat a vegetarian diet.

Marley: Yes, because it's so cheap to eat a vegetarian diet.

Hell yeah.

Typical joint:

Beef with steamed Brocoli $7.95

Steamed Brocoli $8.95

Marley: Yes, because it's so cheap to eat a vegetarian diet.

Actually, it's not that bad. I only buy organic stuff when it's on sale or frozen. I stock up on frozen protein sources: boca burgers, morningstar farms, etc. Clip coupons for my soymilk brand.
It's not hard if you actually make an effort to save money.
But that's not the reason I do it. The thought of eating an animal saddens and disgusts me.
But feel free to do what you want, I don't really care what you put in your body.

2008-06-18 10:26:28 PM
Being a vegetarian has always been cheaper...unless you live in Beef County, Nebraska or Deliverance Township, Tennessee.

/22 years
//still smug

IrishDrunk: Clip coupons for my soymilk brand.

Great point. Soy milk = $2.39/quart
Milk: $3.29/gallon

That 25 cent coupon makes all the difference in the world.

I know a family with a vegan daughter. They feed the other three members of the family for the same amount that they spend on the daughter.

But that's not the reason I do it. The thought of eating an animal saddens and disgusts me.

Bully for you. Do it if that's what's important, but don't do it to save money.

Not as smug as meat eaters who love to biatch and moan about what the hell I shove in my cakehole.

Not nearly as smug as Mac and Linux users.

Sure as hell not as smug as college age girls who wear those stupid big sunglasses with designer names.

it may well be the price of meat rather than high-minded ethics that sends sales of Quorn through the roof.

BS.
a) Quorn is minging
b) It's more expensive, pound for pound, than meat
c) Surveys show that 99% of people who eat fake meat go back to real meat within 12 months

Surveys do not, in fact, show this, but only because nobody's thought to survey it yet

2008-06-18 10:48:20 PM
I'm not a vegan, but it wouldn't have to be expensive. Most of the world lives on beans and rice. Leave it to us Americans to insist on soy this and organic that and preprocessed meat substitutes disguised as "burgers" or "hot dogs." Probably the same mentality that leads us to eating low-fat junk food and driving hybrid SUVs.

I'm going to the Texas Roadhouse and getting a full rack of ribs this weekend and I will enjoy each and every rib down to the bone.

Wanna eat like a rabbit, so be it but leave my damn animal products alone and prices have not increased that much.

most people i know are vegetarians and they run the gamut from fatarse pig who thinks he is better than everyone else for eating tofu and emaciated tiny arse kid who had to be told by his doctor to start eating protein or he would die.

Maybe the ribs, but for your every-day meal, we'll have to make fatties. Yet again, I'm pretty sure fatties will be sold at McDonald's.

My family and I are vegetarians and we spend a ton of money on food. I just recently put on the brakes and got us down to around $800 a month for a family of four. (Don't even ask how much we were spending before!) We buy a ton of fresh vegetables and fruits and not much processed.

I used to be a strict vegetarian, then not, but have dropped meat lately. I don't spend any more on food now because I make everything from scratch, and I eat some wild foods. If you prefer to eat meat then go for it.

The floods in Iowa wiped out a bunch of corn, which is used to feed cattle. It's going to raise beef prices more than celery because not much celery is grown in Iowa. And the gas prices will pretty much increase the price of anything that isn't produce near where it's consumed. I don't think either thing is going to affect vegetarians more than non-vegetarians.
(I'm neither smug nor vegetarian.)

2008-06-18 10:59:46 PM
Get a stand alone freezer and buy a side of beef. Your get a lot of meat and it usually works out to be much cheaper than buying cuts seperatly.

Of course, if it's just you and the old lady you may not want an entire side.

Indeed they do, though they tend to have less meat on them than their omnivorous brethren.

If you want to eat healthy it doesn't matter if you are vegetarian or not. It will be expensive. Good, healthy food is not cheap.

you know that some people are gluten intolerant. it can lead to full-blown celiac disease. and that might be affecting your skinny friend - because it's really hard not to get enough protein. you can have an unhealthy vegetarian diet if you are an idiot and don't listen to your body.

we are biologically adapted to eat a lot of meat, if you excercise a LOT. we aren't biologically adapted to drink cows milk (most of us) or eat lots of gluten (many of us) (us meaning humanity).

i was a vegetarian for years. the bacon won me back. then i started to get fat. i quit wheat and gluten and lost 20 lbs and fit into pants i'd almost thrown away.

the only true food advice: eat food*; not too much**; mostly plants***.

* not food products made in a factory
** duh
*** yup

2008-06-18 11:05:44 PM
I will say that the cheapest of the cheap meat at my local supermarket is 2.99 a pound. I can get tofu for 1.29 a pound.

2008-06-18 11:05:48 PM
ahh... 1.2million people who are soon to contract rickets and stop bothering us.

2008-06-18 11:05:56 PM
With the cost of corn about to go through the roof the cattle ranchers aren't going to be able to feed their cattle. They'll wind up slaughtering what they have and causing a glut of meat on the market driving the prices down.

2008-06-18 11:06:05 PM
Let me just say that I don't care what you eat as long as it isn't me, but please, the vegetarians that preach that people should not eat meat need to learn to shut the fark up and just let people live their farking lives. I also still don't understand the vegan concept, but as long as they don't force me to be a vegan, they can eat or not eat whatever they want.
