Edmonton might have had a chance before they lost Gretzky and Messier.

One of the dirtiest cities I've ever visited... so much crime... I hated every second spent in edmonton

Yeah, right. Taxes are not the only thing that matters to someone who's in the process of choosing a city to live in. Quality of life, cultural dynamism, geographical location, etc.

Edmonton. World class?
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahaaha!!!

2008-06-14 03:08:43 PM
I've visited Edmonton two times for a week each time, and I would love to live there.

Seeing that I could get $15 an hour and full benefits working at McDonalds didn't hurt, either.

Sorry, but at the end of the day, it's still Edmonton.

Dont they have that massive mall there?

or is that Calgary?

No it's Edmonton. It's the world's biggest mall, I think. Or at least it was at some time. I don't know if some other mall has since claimed that prize.

West Edmonton Mall. The city's only claim to fame.

"One of the dirtiest cities I've ever visited... so much crime... I hated every second spent in edmonton"

Yeah because it's sooooo much worse here than Toronto or Vancouver, moran. Don't come back then.

This is a beautiful city, but as mentioned in the article, has a large transient population meaning people bringing their drug habits and shiatty driving skills. Damn maritimers.

2008-06-14 03:12:30 PM
Correct me if I am wrong? But don't most 'world class' cities have higher taxes? i.e. London, Stockholm

Hoodin: One of the dirtiest cities I've ever visited... so much crime... I hated every second spent in edmonton

Remind me never to visit Fredericton. I don't want to breathe in all the smug.

Most of the crime is due to all the rig pigs who come down here from the oil patch on their week off, looking to get high and/or drunk. That, in turn, leads to other types of crime, like assault and murder. And, of course, whatever money they have left over from booze and coke they spend on hookers. When you have a transient population like that, of course you're going to have a lot of crime.

/also, Whyte Ave is not representative of the whole city

Yeah, but you still wouldn't be able to afford a place to live.

Supposedly, there's a mall in China that's bigger. So WEM is the largest mall in North America.

I came here from the US, of all places, and I've never had any problems. Maybe if people from back east wouldn't act like they're the centre of the universe, people wouldn't be so put off.

You're talking to a Californian. Something tells me Edmonton is a cheaper place to live than good ol' Orange County. And if I could manage to live here off $15 a month, I sure as heck could do so up in Edmonton.

Besides, it's not like I'd ever stoop to working at McDonalds. It's just an example of what the wages are like for comparison. I saw a few other signs on the road offering higher wages as well as bonuses for staying as little as three months.

The grass there is extremely green, too.

Just over a year ago a law was passed allowing landlords to raise rents only once a year so naturally they all started raising them by $400/month minimum. Thanks to the genius that came up with that law.

/was the kick in the pants I needed to go buy a place.

blindy the pirate: Correct me if I am wrong? But don't most 'world class' cities have higher taxes? i.e. London, Stockholm

Subby was quoting very selectively, almost like he had an axe to grind. Fta: "You're in that privileged space where you're a very wealthy city with low taxes and a wealthy economy," says Joel Kotkin, a Los Angeles-based urban historian....

I'm thinkin' Kotkin's point is that low taxes are only part of the puzzle, it's the general level of wealth floatin' around that allows the tax rates to be low, while producing enough revenues to fund the "... good infrastructure, good schools..." needed to make the place world-class while creating "... well-paying blue-collar jobs to attract families and entrepreneurial new immigrants."

They could raise the rents monthly? That's strange. Here, as far as I know, it has always been a yearly raise. Also, the annual raise is limited to a certain percentage of the monthly fee.

Edmonton > Calgary

Beautiful city, great restaurants, generally nice people, Whyte Ave if full of jerks with loud pickups.

No, before they had to give 3 months warning, and no, there is no limit to the amount. $1500/month is realistic.

Edmonton is a hole. I lived there. It's blue collar, redneck territory.

Wow. A big mall. And a lot of low-end humanity. Sounds "world class" to me.

Calgary is way better.

2008-06-14 03:30:30 PM
Wow, urban cities in Canada getting larger? Who woulda thunk.

And Edmonton? Um, no way will Edmonton ever be on the same level as Vancouver, San Fran, New York, etc. The only good thing about Edmonton is West Edmonton Mall, and even then, malls are so 80s.

I wouldn't necessarily want to live there, but Calgary is in now way, shape or form better than Edmonton. I lived there for a year and pretty much wanted to kill myself the whole farking time.

The West Edmonton Mall must hold the distinction for most people killed by giant icicles though

I think Edmonton is/was nicer than Calgary, but I haven't been through Alberta in a few years so lots has changed.

also, the guest speaker from the article is a moron who did not earn his paycheque:
- where there is money, arts can follow
- don't expect Edmonton to become Vancouver/San Francisco (repeated 3x)

Who cares what the crime is "due to"? Edmonton is gross.

And feel free to com visit Fredericton. More or less crime free, absolutely no pollution and it was also ranked in the top 7 most intelligent communities of 2008 by the New York based Intelligent Community Forum. Suck it, Edmonton.

Daroc: Edmonton wouldnt want a monorail, thats more of a Calgary thing....

Edmonton has a pretty good transit system. I went there for a week and the free pass was way better than cabs. But the cabs were still cheap. White avenue was, I think, awesome. I seem to remember seeing live music and cheap rounds. Usually that's a good start.

There are dirty parts like every city... They do have oil though. Lots of oil.

Everything West of Fredericton sucks. Please, what are you waiting for, move to Fredericton. The Irving family will provide plentiful jobs for you at their monopolies

Unless you are smart, a hot woman, or both, do not come near my city or the police will hunt you down and taze you repeatedly. Rankings and surveys are lies, there is no more room left.

Alberta in general is Fake Texas. Why anyone would choose to live there, I don't know.

Low taxes do not a world-class city make. They make a Winston-Salem or an Edmonton. Normal taxes to pay for a decent infrastructure are kind of a prerequisite.
