Wait till some old granny swerves to avoid it and takes out a few pedestrians.

Or farmers markets.

2008-06-13 02:53:53 PM
I like the idea, but why would they put them sideways? I drive a car that has very low ground clearance and seeing that would cause me to slam on the breaks and possibly get rearended.

Those look nothing like speedbumps.

2008-06-13 02:58:13 PM
Uh, those aren't 3D speed bumps. Those look like 3D roadblocks.

They should put down holograms of babies and old people lying on the street.

In Philly? People would try to hit them then back up to steal their shoes.

That is guaranteed to cause a wreck. Lawyers soon to line up.

This makes me want to go to the next Philadelphia City Council meeting with a giant, blown-up "Followup" tag.

They're not 3D. They're 2D but they look like 3D.

Once people get used to the fact that they're really flat images, they won't have any deterrent effect at all.

It looks like a skateboard jump.

It's Philly. If they wanted to get commuters to slow down, they should have gone with the giant brick of coke route.

It will be bad enough with them stopping dead in front of the damn things and refusing to proceed.

In fact, all it's going to do is up the number of people jacking their cars up hitting real speed bumps.

Yes, Philly...but every other traffic plan involving harmless things looking like something dangerous/scary has worked so well.

I dunno, this didn't work too badly.

Part of the ongoing effort to make real driving more like a video game. Those orange triangle dealies make me think of Battletoads, for some reason.

If it were battletoads, they would be real roadblocks, 10 feet high, and they would appear and blink for 10 milliseconds before your car rams into them.

I've seen the "sideways" bumps before, they are spaced so that it's difficult to get a cars tires to stay on flat ground. I love them since I ride a motorcycle; I just ride between them.

They look like the track in excitebike to me... If only I had Photoshop on this PC.

I cant get to the article for some reason. But wouldnt putting fake speed bumps only make people think real speed bumps were fake as well and then they just wouldnt break for them too?

BigDumbGuy: possibly get rearended.

It's really not that bad. In fact, it can be a lot of fun.
Just relax and go slow at first.

So what happens to this genius plan once all of the drivers realize that the bumps are fake, and remember where they are all at?

2008-06-13 05:05:20 PM
That won't fool the Roadrunner.

I can hear it alread:
"I was looking at the huge bump in the road and I didn't see the pedestrian up ahead."

I'd be more inclined to slow down if I saw this.

Those things just look dangerous. Those look like they would cause people to swerve or slam on the brakes causing more accidents than they prevent. That takes some smarts.

I wonder how many fender benders that will cause.

How the hell would a car get through that if that were a real 3-D object?

2008-06-13 06:12:26 PM
Perhaps the perspective is wrong, but to me those just look like go faster arrows.

Desquamation: They look like the track in excitebike to me

Yep, excite bike ramps.

What I love/hate about this picture is that in the oncoming lanes it looks like someone did some roadwork and patched it. But no one bothered to repaint the yellow lines.

Instead' they're wastting paint on excite bike jump ramps.

My favorite thing about Philly is how some of the locals try to defend their unredeemed shiathole.

2008-06-13 07:51:21 PM
The problem is they look nothing like speed bumps. You just have to realize that one of them is fake to know that they're all fake. So I guess they would only be good once for each person?

Now if they had images of a gold chain or a nice pair of shoes... that might slow people down.

2008-06-13 08:05:12 PM
If I saw one of these, I would stop with my rear tires over the sticker, hold the brake and floor my V8, ripping and burning those idiotic things into oblivion.

Bacontastesgood: My favorite thing about Philly is how some of the locals try to defend their unredeemed shiathole.

Isn't that the truth.

Every time I go into Philly, I see lots of extremely realistic 3-D decals of festering garbage, urban blight, and homeless people.

And the homeless decals seem to be scratch-and-sniff...

These would definitely cause me to pantomime hitting my brakes.

2008-06-13 11:40:05 PM
And thats why I drive vehicles with high ground clearance..Why slow down? Juts have to balance the vehicle to avoid the back end kicking up higher than expected.

And big speed bumps do distract the driver from their surroundings and cause them to slow down suddenly and then speed up fast after passing the bump.
