After reading the school's Wiki, I am disappointed.

Suicidal Writer: Bryan Adams High School

After reading the school's Wiki, I am disappointed.

You're disappointed that the school wasn't dedicated in the Summer of '69?

Joshua didn't miss a single day of school.

Well, whoever was carrying the GPS device on any particular day didn't.

But it feels so right.

Why is this a scary tag? Seems like a good use of technology. If the kid needs someone "watching" him 24/7 for a while to keep him on track and, according to the article, WANTS it, then this is not a bad thing.

Sometimes just knowing that someone is keeping close tabs on you will make you toe the line.

2008-06-11 04:56:56 AM
They can make the kids wear the gps devices all they want but the ones who really don't care where they may end up can just drop out anyway. I mean last time I checked 16 was the magic number or did it get changed?

How to prevent truancy:

1. Offer rewards for students returned during school hours.

2. Make those offers to crack heads.

3. Pay rewards in cash.

Why would a school in Dallas, Tx. named after a Canadian singer?

2008-06-11 05:01:31 AM
Now if we only had a Corey Hart High School.

joltek: Why would a school in Dallas, Tx. named after a Canadian singer?

From Dallas ISD:

"William Jennings Bryan Adams was born in Iuka, Miss., in 1896. In April 1929, Adams became the purchasing agent for the Dallas Independent School District, a position for which his business career and training was a perfect fit. Adams later became business manager of the schools and secretary of the Board of Education. He remained in those positions for 26 years."

Me and some guys from school
Had a band and we tried real hard
Jimmy quit, Jody got grounded
Shoulda known we'd never get far

Oh when I look back now
I really shoulda done my homework
Instead, I skipped that class
And now I gotta wear this bracelet

These are the best days of my life.

/he was 9 years old in the Summer of 69
//I've always hated that damn song

2008-06-11 05:37:54 AM
"Me and my baby in 69..."

I'm pretty sure that song wasn't about the year.

2008-06-11 05:46:58 AM
Oh well,
I guess he's just young and restless
And needed to unwind

Get it? Because the school is called... aw never mind...

/they'll be coming around
//looking for answers
///chasing him down

2008-06-11 06:12:54 AM
Stay in school, kids, or you'll end up submitting stories on Fark.

2008-06-11 06:27:39 AM
So why the scary tag?

2008-06-11 06:29:56 AM
Does it explode if he crosses the perimeter?

2008-06-11 06:34:35 AM
Should have the dumbass tag. For the kid that is.

If you were a unruly little shiathead then maybe you wouldn't get a GPS device strapped to you.

So, the article said that his parents dropped him off at school and he'd just leave. This happened 160 times in a 185-day school year.

Why the hell were they bothering taking him to school? Either get involved in a solution or give up, but just dropping the kid off obviously wasn't working.

"Son, I need you to promise me you're going to stay in school today!"

"I promise."

Repeat 160 times. Great work, mom and dad.

He's lucky he doesn't attend Nickleback High...
I here the kids that go there get beat up regularly.

FTFA: Last year, out of 185 school days, he had 160 unexcused absences.

Better he just stays out for the rest of the days. No use wasting only semi-brain dead kids' time.

Home-schooling FTW! RON PAUL

True story.

The drummer in my band had the awful task nearly 30 years ago of having to fire Bryan Adams. They were all in a band together in high school, and complained he couldn't sing or play. They took a vote, and my buddy lost and had to tell him it wasn't working out.

/maybe I should get my drummer to fire me?
//enjoy the tunes!

so whats keeping him from going to the straight C student and say "I'll meet you out front every day- and give you this GPS thingy... here's a hustler for your payment."

I wanna know more about this GPS thingy... seems like a good idea that wasnt thought through fully.... ankle bracelet?

For the record, Canada has apologized for Bryan Adams high school on several occasions.

According to the article:

"But dropouts cost society even more.

Three in 10 federal prisoners, four in 10 state prisoners and half of those in death row are dropouts."

So...

7 in 10 federal prisoners, 6 in 10 state prisoners and half the population are not dropouts who have a diploma...

Well damn... dropouts have better odds on not going to prison...

Drop out of school if you don't want to see prison time kids.

We had a kid in high school that had one of those, that was over 6 years ago.

And if the pilot project is a success, how long before whether or not you "want to do it" becomes a non-issue? Or, for that matter, how long before it becomes mandatory for all students "just incase?"

Or, much more likely, mandatory for all students because only forcing the students who's truancy rates might actually warrant the use of this device would hurt their widdle feewings.

Can I subscribe to your math newsletter?

But seriously, the saddest thing about this article is the "peer pressure to skip school". Yes, there is peer pressure to do all sorts of stuff. But if your only choice of friends is the kids who want to remain idjits, you're living in a pretty bad community.

You just know the Vietnamese immigrant kids are dying to get a tiny bit of rebellion, so hang out with them and listen to Tejano together. They get the rebellion, you get a good peer group.
