In a few weeks, I'll be moving to El Paso. Ever the optimist, I thought one of the perks would be living near Mexico; Ciudad Juarez specifically.
The crime wave there due to the drug wars is paralyzing. That perk is off the table for now.

Is that still going on? I remember a few years ago reading about the crime/murders going on at the border there; both sides. It was staggering.

The hundreds/thousands of murdered and missing women is one thing. That is still continuing. Those are the maquiladora murders.

Aside, in the last month, the Chief of Police was murdered and the Director of Safety up and quit after death threats.

Link (new window)

So they've got two distinct (though maybe not completely unrelated) streams of murder.

My guess is they also need to pay their police and military a living wage. Or at least come close to what they get paid to look the other way.

As much as one would want to fight intimidation, it's pretty hard when your life could end any given evening..

If only for self preservation I'd leave the country, probably on a green and pink door, or a VW bug floating on barrels..

Down there the "war on drugs" is not a clever euphanism, down there the term means what we mean when we say "war in Iraq".

There is an actual shooting war going on between the government and the narco's and the bad guys have more or less fought the government to standstill so far (Not suprising acutally they are at least as well funded and equipped, and much more motivated)

I traveled 1200 miles by car from Nogales to Mazatlan to La Paz to TJ in '97 camping the whole way.
No problems but I'll never do that again. Farkin crazy down there.

It was just the first delivery in the Body-Part-of-the-month club. After 12 months, you can build your own Mexican.

As a border resident, who frequently goes across to Matamoras. I can say they arent kidding around. Recently the mexican army(federales) circled the local police station and took control of the local police department. They were looking for illegal weapons, coke, guns and members of the Zetas who are police officals. They took a few to Mexico D.F. for questioning they are screwed. Personally I feel we are the problem the americanos.
These groups are drug smugglers and all they are doing is filling the demand here. These guys arent smuggling wetbacks, ya know panic build the wall and keep Osama out... If we would legalize the weed they would be out of buiness, and we would be keeping our dollars here instead of heading south. and they could go back to eating tortillas and beans. Am I the only person who can see if they dont have business they would go crawl back under the rock they came from.
Back in the day Juan Abrago Garcia was the big dog in the area, a local boy from La Paloma who made millions supplying the markets here. There was 1 jefe(boss) everyone made money and there was no violence but if you got out of line that was another story. Think of it like if you live in detroit and work for GM.
The feds wanted him bad I think they wanted him because they hated the thought of a boy from a dirt floor shack on the river winding up with millions and the power to make them look like fools. It was a game and he won. They finally went into mex and captured him and illegally extradited him here. The mexicans wouldnt do anything they are all on the take.
Anyway when they got him all hell broke loose because all the little putos wanted to be the new jefe and from that we are here today.
Moral of the story legalize tax the weed and these problems go away. and so will I

I wonder if Drew will get threats for greenlighting this.

Seriously. The border situation is far worse than what our media tells us.

A number of friends and I were in South Padre for Spring Break in 89, we went to Matamoros to party in the evenings. Cheap booze and no drinking age...

One of those nights Mark Killroy goes missing. I think he was a student at UT. A few days later his parents are down there handing out fliers with his picture. Nothing like having his dad or uncle look you in the eye and asking if we saw or knew him.

Parts of him turn up a few days later.

Never felt safe in Mexico after that.

My favorite goat cheese pizza is made in Juarez. So at least theres that. Plus you can have a mexican maid clean your house daily for practicaly nothing in El Paso

Every time you smoke or snort drugs smuggled from mexico, YOU share the blame for the violence.

I know most of you potheads have been programmed to believe that smoking pot hurts nobody. Well, it is time to pull your head out your farking ass and face reality.

How many people have to die so you can get high?

4 months ago or so I was chastising Farkers for saying Tijuana was dangerous, all because I had been there in 1997, 2001 and 2002 with no problems. I went there three weeks ago.

It's dangerous. Oh, hells yes. It took about 35 minutes for me to get accosted by a cop and asked for bribes. After the cop, some guys in a Camaro "escorted" me to an ATM. The cop was watching the whole time.

/Out $400 and an iPod Nano.
