(CNN)   Fark joked about, but CNN actually said it: "Oil prices shot up [because of] a forecast that oil would hit $150 by July 4."   (money.cnn.com) divider line 441

So will one of these jackholes please predict that it will be down to $65 by August and knock the bottom out of the market?

That was no joke. There is no doubt that speculation is causing oil prices to rise.

You have a choice. You can either have higher oil prices, or you can have shortages. Personally, I'd take the higher gas prices.

It's not news, it's....the sad state of reality.

2008-06-06 04:57:10 PM
The supply and demand of the oil is fairly consistent, what has changed is the desire to pull money out of companies affected by high oil prices and compete for oil futures, thus driving oil upwards.

Remember that the Great Depression was caused by speculation, too many investors shifting money into and out of investments based on news feeds.

No, gasoline for use in automobiles is the only known use for oil.

And yet there is relatively the same amount of oil and the same supply as there was yesterday or last year even.

I declare a writ of shenannigans on the oil industry

Do you really think that makes you immune to the price of oil increasing? Everything uses oil. Just wait for the real food price increases.

If we can get as many people out of their cars as possible, demand for oil will decrease.

Price will come down, AND you will have more money.

/Bread shouldn't go over $30 a loaf.

Quite possible. However, it stands that futures trading has done a lot to keep the spice flowing at a consistent rate.

I'm planting a garden. It seems like everyone used to grow a lot of their own food, and we don't do that anymore -- it's too easy to drive to McDonalds. I expect we'll see people developing green thumbs again before long.
