He'd have to repay his student loans, then.

I know this guy. He has a job. He's a professor at Brown, BU and BC.

/taught an urban planning class I was in.

I'm happy for him. Still, people like this make me feel like I'm a drunk, indolent bastard. I am, but I'd prefer to not feel that way.

Found his website. A bit of a geek, but he did hold our last class at the pub.

/very nice guy.

I bet dinner with him is a blast.

"I think..."

"It doesn't matter what you think! I'm the most credible person in modern history!"

*oh god, here he goes again....*

Is it me, or does this dude have too easy a time getting into some rather difficult programs?

The BU Pub. This was a BU class.

This guy wasn't someone who bragged about his academic accomplishments like a lot of people three times his age with a fraction of his credentials do. He was an honestly nice guy, who was matter of fact about the stuff he had done.

2008-06-06 04:56:09 PM
Good for him. Maturity, responsibility, and hard work are overrated.

Then I'll raise a pint to him; if he's contributing to modern journals and also "giving back" to the students, then he's in the right place.

Sweet, he got a degree from my school.
Mine's cooler though. But apparently he graduated in my year from another program. Neat. And a professor i knew is in the article. Neat.

Mr. Bolger went on to earn a master's or two a year, while his mother read aloud his assignments and transcribed his essays.

Still lives in mom's basement.

I highly doubt he pays very much in tuition. School have grants for people like him.

2008-06-06 05:01:08 PM
Not to belittle his accomplishments, because what he's done is truly astounding but, after reading these sentences:

"His mother went with him, serving as his reader and scribe in a master's program in sociology..."

and

"Bolger dictates most compositions, and his mother, girlfriend, a volunteer, or a hired stenographer types them."

I think a lot of people could have achieved a lot more academically. I mean if you've got a team of people working for you, you're going to get a lot more done than you can do on your own.

Problem is people don't "believe" you until you've got the piece of paper.
Or at least they won't pay you...as much.

As a self-learner...I sometimes wish I've had more formal training.
Not because I can't do, but sometime I think I might have holes in my knowledge...perhaps it would be more complete.
But that doesn't stop me.
I still go out and get it done.

Guess he just never got interested in any fields that require substantial mathematical and scientific knowledge.

One doctorate and everything else Masters (which is a joke), having a disability which helps to get into good schools and federal aid, and studying easy majors, is not much of an accomplishment.

Someone with three PhDs in math, engineering, and any pure science would get more respect from me, a plus would be if she stripped to pay her way.

2008-06-06 05:20:30 PM
Eh, I'm going to have to say that I'm pretty impressed. Everyone in here knocking him for having a desire to learn is a twat.

If nothing else, at least he's motivated - more than most can say (myself included).

Slick Dick Lick: Good for him. Maturity, responsibility, and hard work are overrated.

Right because getting eleven doctorates doesn't require hard work, maturity, or responsibility.
