And all of 45 gallons. Good for them.

If I'd had the money, and the time, and the foresight, and the ability to get the EPA permits I'd have built a 1000 gallon tank outside my house back when gas was $.98/gallon.

So yeah, high barriers to entry there, but I see situations like that and think "why not?"

2008-06-06 10:06:46 AM
I had an idiot neighboor that stored 5 gallons in a jug that wasn't the red heavy plastic self-venting. Stored outside in a hot directly-in-the-sun storage shed.

"What's that smell!? zomg call teh fire dapartmentz!" Fool!

The sprinkler took care of 45 gallons of gas? That's impressive.

-I've wondered for a while if there was a way to buy, say, 500 or 1000 gallons of gas at current prices but leave it in the tank at the gas station and have a card or something to get it as needed. You'd pay a small storage fee per month. It's sort of like the commodities market when you hope the price goes up so you save $ and the station owner hopes it goes down so he makes (extra) $$. I wonder if it could catch on? I've been itching to try it but haven't found a willing station. Yet...

I guess you'd have to find a station owner that sees gas trending downwards...

-Haha. True. One owner told me that they raise prices as soon as they're announced because even though that gas is already paid for, the have to charge enough to refill their storage tanks at the new price. Their margin is razor-thin, the storage charge they'd have to charge per month would have to vary with the spot price and so it might not be economical...

2008-06-06 10:18:51 AM
I'll bet they saved all of twenty dollars.

Not only does gas evaporate quickly, it will eat through most plastic containers given enough time...

Gas gets old, but if I had a storage tank I'd consider stocking up.

2008-06-06 10:19:30 AM
Fools. Everyone knows that if you're going to hoard gasoline in your house, you use ziploc bags. The yellow-and-blue-make-green seal lets you know it's closed!

Death can. Especially when you burn up because you're an idiot hoarding gas. Let's hope this situation teaches them a lesson.

How to beat high gas prices: buy stock in gas companies and get paid dividends for every share you own. Own enough shares and you'll be able to offset the rise in fuel prices.

2008-06-06 10:20:49 AM
Well now, I do have about 45 gal. of LP gas stored in the garage.

Headso: doesn't gas evaporate fairly rapidly?

If you keep it long enough, it loses some "oomph" yeah.

Friend of mine stockpiled some gas for Y2K (general "disaster time gas") safely in a proper tank in an outbuilding, for running generators and things. Generally there's some in there.

Anyway, when it got old enough, it was definitely "time to use up that old gas" or mix it in with new, if you intend to use it in the car.

Keeping it in plastic containers in your apartment closet? Not so bright a move!

/unless we're talking brightness of the fire, of course

yasharki: Not only does gas evaporate quickly, it will eat through most plastic containers given enough time...

Not really. Gas will keep for a good 3-4 months in a standard plastic gas container. Still wouldn't advise storing it in your house though.

Yeah, there's a company here called "PetroCanada" (guess where they're based...) and on their pumps they have a pie chart breaking down what costs of your gas dollar goes into drilling, refining, taxes, etc etc and the profit apparently is somewhere in the ballpark of 3%. Considering that these guys make 3 cents on every dollar, owning a gas station isn't quite the cash cow it looks like when you see the prices on the morning commute.

2008-06-06 10:23:21 AM
Wow, that's quite a stockpile they've got there. 45 gallons? Maybe OPEC found out they were hoarding it and sent someone to destroy it.

I wish I had the foresight to save up 2 whole tanks of gas.

I've got about 1.5 litres of gas stored in my lower intestine, as soon as I'm sure that no one's going to be coming into my office, I think I'll dispose of it safely.

And you won't find a willing station because the price of gas is NEVER going down again, perhaps a few pennies off here and there as a token gesture to the public, but no real decrease will happen ever again.

Headso: doesn't gas evaporate fairly rapidly?

I've had a container of gas for my lawnmower sitting in my shed since last summer, and it's still good.

What old gas WILL do it gum. If the gas comes into contact with anything copper or containing copper (such as brass parts in an old style carburetor) some slow chemical reactions will take place leaving deposits. Some of the lighter hydrocarbons might evaporate as well but since I keep the gas in a plastic container it's still good enough for mowing the lawn.
