Otherwise known as "The Not-So-Great Wail of China."

i think that cheer will run out of gas before long

2008-06-06 09:52:04 AM
I think the "add petrol" bit is more in line with "give it the gas." Hence why in TFA they say the chant more than likely means "go, go."

FTFA: ...all of them apparently trapped in an endless cycle of violence that none of them desire and yet are powerless to stop...

Apparently the kid in the bunny suit LOVES IT. He signals to the masked dude "BRING IT ON," and when he shoots his FAKE ear off, the kid gets all stabby blasty.

Add petrol to China? Dear god, are they mobilizing?! Before you know it, there will be an influx of Chinese all over the world, invading our industries, our markets, even our homes!! Their influence will be evident in every facet of our lives!! WE HAVE TO STOP THIS MADNESS NOW!!1!

Huh?

Dear China,

Stop trying so hard to be cool and just be.

I remember my marketing teacher talking about that like 15 years ago.

Why would the article have translated it as "add petrol" in the first place if it actually means "go, go!"? Literal translations always sound stupid. It would be like me trying to explain the meaning of "no shiat" to a chinese person as "lack of fecal matter" instead of "obviously."

2008-06-06 01:21:04 PM
Meh, it just means "pour more gas on the fire".

"Jia You" (jee-ah yoow) is more like "Come on!".

/ There are plenty of English phrases that sound ridiculous when translated. Just like every other language.
// Why's this news? Oh yeah, this is Fark.

icanhazstapler: Why would the article have translated it as "add petrol" in the first place if it actually means "go, go!"?

Because it makes it easier to mock the reds. Why else?

Zit Seed: TheGreyPiper: Zit Seed: Great, another summer where we all celebrate the biggest and strongest members of society. Inequity is apparently only important when there aren't races to be won and balls to throw through hoops.

Huh?

The fact that this tiny group of the population is able to participate in this event, and then afterwards celebrated as heroes, while the vast majority are unable to take part does not bother you? It in inequality at its finest.

Did you go to one of those schools that don't give F's?

Heamer: Before you know it, there will be an influx of Chinese all over the world, invading our industries, our markets, even our homes!!

They already have--haven't your heard? Every fourth child born in the world is Chinese.

Sh*t--just look at the Duggars if you want proof: there's Joshua, Jana, John-David, Jing Tao, Jill, Jessa, Jinger, Jun Li, Josiah, Joy-Anna, Jedidiah, Ji Xao, Jason, James, Justin, Jiao, Johannah, and Jennifer.

2008-06-06 01:31:44 PM
This isn't anything new or odd. A traditional Chinese cheer is 加油 ("jia1 you2"), which is literally "refuel" but is better translated as "rev up!" (picture stepping on the gas pedal in a car).

You can't translate Chinese character by character, otherwise you end up with gibberish.

Jeez, these commies have a government office for everything..

It's a wonder us free people even survive without someone telling us what to do.

I just looked up the menu of the sushi place where we're going tonight and they had a picture with a caption that said "Raw Robster something" dish. It was, of course, lobster. I cracked up a little bit. But I got over it. I'm not cracking up anymore. It was funny at first. Now, not really anymore. Robster. meh. See?

No it isn't. Pee-peeing in your Coke, now THAT'S a joke.

2008-06-06 01:38:42 PM
Umm, it's not so much an "official cheer" as a common sporting chant that's been around for ages. It's about as meaningful as "ole, ole ole ole." xanadian and THX 1138 (the second time around) hit it right on the head.

2008-06-06 01:38:51 PM
Zit Seed:The fact that this tiny group of the population is able to participate in this event, and then afterwards celebrated as heroes, while the vast majority are unable to take part does not bother you? It in inequality at its finest.

Well, now. Sounds like someone is still bitter about being picked last for kickball.

FTFA: "Go Olympics! Go China! expresses the Citius, Altius, Fortius (Faster, Higher, Stronger) Olympic spirit and is in line with general international principles for cheering"

In other news, there are general international principles for cheering.
