Oh, there are TWO kittens in there! I didn't even see the one nursing. Wait, THREE! I see a little mouth just beneath the open mouth. Just think: In a few years, all three of them will be vomiting disgusting things into their owners' shoes.

Ive always been a dog person but I may get a cat... I'm not sure if my lifestyle would be cruel to one.

My friend brings her cat over and he loves it because I live on the 5th floor of a condo and have lots of birds and other cats walking around, so hes always entertained. My railings are super close together and high so jumping out is no option. My only issue is sometimes I travel with work for 5 days at a time. Can I leave a bunch of food and water out for 4-5 days and have the cat feed itself? Ive got about 1100 sq ft for it to play in, so thats not too bad...

I grew up with dogs and know this would be a no-no. Any cat lovers/owners, please help?!?!?

Yes. Cats will be just fine with a large supply of food and water. The only issue to to make sure there's a large litter box full of clean litter, because no one will be there to scoop out the used stuff.

Also, make it easier on yourself and buy flushable litter. I recommend Swheat Scoop. You can scoop the litter box directly into the toilet and just flush everything down.

Be aware that my overweight adult shorthair can do a standing jump OVER my washing machine. If he wanted to jump a 6' railing and his life depended on it, and/or he thought it was a good idea, I'm pretty sure he could.

As for food, yes. Cats can handle themselves alone for long stretches. My two have done plenty of three-day weekends, and a five-day stretch isn't out of the question. Get an auto-feeder and an auto-waterer (the kind where food/water is left out 24x7) and let you cat spend a few weeks getting used to it. Also, for a five-day trip, have at least two (and maybe three) litterboxes. Again, give your cat a few weeks to get used to all three.

So glad this got greenlit. This is my second major cat green. Third if you count the "Photoshop this stretchy cat" thread.

Great to know, thanks. I see lots of cats on balconies in the city. I think if I monitored a cat from a young age that it'd be fine... does anyone have a cat and a balcony?

Thanks for the advice on the litter boxes, I was wondering about that if I were gone for a week. I see the trays in the pet isle so getting a few spares would be easy.

I'm a new cat lover and want to learn lots... whats the major difference between male and female cats? Any major attitude differences?

As a general rule, males are more affectionate and outgoing and females are more reserved. But a lot of it depends on the personality of the cat. Make sure you get a male who was neutered at an early age, so he won't have the 'spray' instinct. If at all possible, get two cats instead of one; they keep each other company and are more fun.

Oh, and as the new owner of a pair of three month olds, let me tell you what to expect of their typical day (at least as kittens):

Wake up
Eat
Pee and/or poop
Fight
Explore the apartment
Fight
Attack anything dangly
Fight
Pee and/or poop
Explore the apartment
Crawl under the couch to sleep

Repeat that 90-120 minute cycle all day long.

For the most part, no. Some purebreds have gender traits, but I think the attitude is more a factor of the cat's upbringing. My advice would be to go to your local shelter, find a cat that you like, and ask to play with it. If it leaps and cuddles up in your arms, you've found a keeper.

If you're lucky enough, see if there happens to be a Maine Coon at the shelter. As a breed they tend to be very dog-like. Mine follows me around room to room and always favors curling up near me over sitting on my lap. She learned her name after a few weeks and even knows a few tricks. The males grow up to be gigantic (for a cat), and the females tend to hover on the small side. Bonus: They take about five years to reach full size.

Nice! Can you leave kittens on their own, or do they need to be penned up like dogs? I'm not sure if I should get a kitten or a rescue cat thats already somewhat trained.

When I first got mine, my female was about 4 months old (the shelter exaggerated her age, either deliberately or by accident) and the male was about 7 months old. He was at the play-all-the-time stage, she wasn't.

She never understood why he kept attacking her. I'd hear this teeny tiny yowling and find her cowering underneath my kitchen cabinets, in that 3" space between where they stick out and the floor. Poor little thing. :(

Anyway, now they're all grown up and he's about three times her size. He'll stalk her and bowl her over, and she'll always wind up putting him in a headlock and kicking and kicking and kicking and kicking until he runs off.

They're best pals.

Philly_gp: Nice! Can you leave kittens on their own, or do they need to be penned up like dogs? I'm not sure if I should get a kitten or a rescue cat thats already somewhat trained.

As long as you make sure you don't leave anything dangerous out. Make sure your trash is secured so they can't get to any plastic, the cords for your blinds or curtains are tied up so they can't get to them, cables are either out of reach or sprayed with bad-taste spray (available at any pet store and the pet sections of most supermarkets/big box stores (Target, K-Mart, Walmart, etc), things like that. Also make sure their litterbox is clean and that they have plenty of food and water. I keep a bowl of dry food out for them all the time and feed them canned food when I get home from work in the mornings. Otherwise, there haven't been any problems.

The best time to bring them home is Friday afternoon so you'll have all weekend to supervise them. This way, they have time to get used to you as well as their new environment and you can keep an eye on them to make sure they don't get into things they shouldn't be getting into. A squirt from a spray water bottle and a firm "No!" has been enough so far to keep them off the coffee table.

Just remember to go over your home with a fine-toothed comb. Little things like twist-ties, plastic wrappers, cigarette butts, and bits of string you might normally overlook can be dangerous if a kitten gets hold of it. Crawl around with your head to the ground too so you can see at kitten-level and check to see what all they can get into and where they can crawl into. And beware of recliners! There's lots of springs and metal bits for them to get caught in. The only recliner we have in the house is a broken loveseat we were going to get rid of, but the kittens have claimed it as their base of operations so we're leaving it be for now. However, we do NOT use that chair and do NOT EVER use the reclining function on it.

And the good news? If the kittens were raised with their mother, by the time you get them (about 8 weeks old), they should be completely litter trained. All I had to do was stick them in the litterbox one time each and from then on, they've never once gone anywhere else for the over a month I've had them. It's nothing like a dog where you have to spend a lot of time and effort to housebreak them. Most kittens learn from their mothers, and even if they don't it's instinctual for them to bury their waste.

Hey now, most dogs will housetrain themselves if done properly. They don't like to soil their homes.

Not like a kitten. A puppy will poop in dark corners and stuff, sure. But it'll still take a while before they get the hang of going to the door and circling or whatever to get your attention to let them out. I've had my kittens since they were 8 weeks old, and they're now over 3 months old. They've never ONCE gone anywhere but their litterbox.

Wait until they become adults and decide that the litterbox, which you JUST SCOOPED AND RELOADED FOUR HOURS AGO, is no longer to their satisfaction. They won't actually *tell* you, of course. They'll just go pee next to the litterbox or wharf up a hairball somewhere in the house while you're sleeping.

Hairless. That's the only kind.

And BTW? Black cats somehow still manage to shed white fur. *shrug*

Theres something insanely funny about a grown man exploring his apartment, attacking anything dangly, fighting, pooping, and crawling under the couch.

Like I said, that's a 90-120 minute cycle. Then they sleep for about an hour or two, then start it all up over again.
