What your graph fails to reflect is that the majority of civilian casualties have been wrought at the hands of foreign, muslim terrorists.

This is immaterial to the subject at hand which is to pay tribute to a true American hero. The citizens of heaven can sleep well knowing that the pearly gates are guarded by yet another worthy Marine!

I think they throw the word hero around way too much these days. Some fella join the reserves and is sent to guard an oil dump in Kuwait, so the whole family talks about their "hero." He's brave, sure. heroic? meh.

Well thank goodness I'm just a soldier and not a marine.

I serve at your will- you and the rest of the voting American population. If you are so ungrateful for the work your military does for you, maybe you should take a break from doing your 'important work that allows our country to prosper' and do something about the war you find your country in. I was wondering what exactly were the perks of being a Living MOH recipient:

Enlisted recipients of the Medal of Honor are entitled to a supplemental uniform allowance.

Recipients receive special entitlements to air transportation under the provisions of DOD Regulation 4515.13-R. Very cool.

Special identification cards and commissary and exchange privileges are provided for Medal of Honor recipients and their eligible dependents. This would probably mean living near a base in order to take advantage of the PX.

Children of recipients are eligible for admission to the United States military academies without regard to the quota requirements. You have to admit, that would be very cool and tremendously hard to live up to having your Dad (and eventually a Mom.) be a MOH and you are at West Point or Annapolis. Does anyone know if there are any kids that have taken up this offer?

Recipients receive a 10% increase in retired pay under 10 U.S.C. § 3991. Um, big farking deal.

Those awarded the medal after October 23, 2002 also receive a Medal of Honor Flag. The law also specifies that all 143 living Medal of Honor recipients receive the flag along with all future recipients.(14 U.S.C. § 505). cool.

As with all medals, retired personnel may wear the Medal of Honor on "appropriate" civilian clothing. Regulations also specify that recipients of the Medal of Honor are allowed to wear the uniform "at their pleasure" with standard restrictions on political, commercial, or extremist purposes; other former members of the armed forces may do so only at certain ceremonial occasions

From Wiki.

I have the utmost respect and admiration for anyone in the military. It's likely the most controversial calling that a person can have. Civilians (me included) have absolutely no idea what threats we face from our adversaries. And we don't always need to know, because we have these brave and selfless people looking out for us to keep us from living in constant fear and panic.

You may think that by making some type of political stand or rattling on with some ridiculous diatribe against war and our military heroes that you look informed and enlightened. And that you truly believe that Skittles will magically fall from the sky when a beautiful rainbow appears while bunny rabbits hippity-hop through the green meadow and the soft breeze gently tousels your hair like a huge hug from God.

It's nice to think those thoughts. And we might not like to think of the dirty jobs that our military personnel are doing to ensure that we get to enjoy days like that. And yes, our founding fathers and anyone who helped build this country (and others like it) deserve my utmost respect as well. I, for one, stand tall and put my hand over my heart whenever I see the U.S. Flag. And I'm not afraid to admit that I get a tear in my eye and goosebumps when I read about the selfless acts and loyal service that allows me to take pride in my country and my flag.

I wish I could show my respect in a greater way. Because for anyone who has "joined up", I salute you with every fiber of my being.

Yeah...this is off topic and we're cluttering a post with shiate and not respecting a man who served his country with distinction...but when I see posts like Sammy's I felt I had to respon...

Is your head that far up your arse? I seem to recall that there's a certain leader of al-Qaida who financed and planned the attacks of 9/11 that was being harbored by the Taliban government. Remember that guy?

Guess what, let's just say for a moment the United States did nothing in response? No troops in Iraq or Afghanistan. Guess what? Al-Qaida would have been laughing. And guess what else? They'd still want to kill YOU! And anyone else for that matter that doesn't believe in their ideology. If the United States were just another isolationist government, minding it's own business, not getting involved in the wrongs of this planet, guess what? Al-Qaida would still want to kill YOU!

Right now, the world faces a danger that is unimaginable. How do you negotiate with a group of people whose brains are so twisted that not only do they think it's their duty to kill as many non-believers as possible, but that by doing so ensures them a place in Heaven?

So yes, you do owe Marines, former Marines, and every person who has worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. They defend the right for you to post the type of ass-hattery and the freedoms you enjoy. They stand on that wall so you don't have to.

Type posting what you just did in a county like Myanmar, tell their military to STFU, and see what your reward would have been. It'd probably be at the very least a lengthy prison stay, or perhaps a bullet in your temple.

If you are trolling, you are an asshat for doing so in a thread that should be honoring a great man.

If you are not trolling, you are a true idiot. Not all jobs are created equal...and while the current war effort's merits are certainly up for argument, the existence of the military and the sacrifice that those men and women make are not. Especially from someone who most likely does not know the meaning of selflessness. I am not making a pie-in-the-sky generalization about military folks, some are in it just as a job. But the ones who stand out and truly serve above and beyond deserve much respect. It is the fact that a man would, in an instant, make a decision to help save his fellow men. This truly shows the true fiber of his being, that honor and duty flowed through his veins. In todays society, which is rife with disrespect and apathy, it is refreshing to see what once were the standards of conduct.

legton: epoc_tnac,
You are right, the military and people in it should be able to say no to orders from the democratically elected people they are supposed to be in charge. Veto by firepower, thats a good check on power.

Except of course it leads to military dictactorship.

As long as man is mortal, violence can be used to gain power. One of the best tools againest violence is sometimes violence itself (I dont think Civil Disobedience would have worked againest Hitler).

So what you are saying is that all military should just say no when given a command to go to Iraq? Each and every person who has ever joined the military has joined full knowing that they might some day be called to war to defend their country. And by defend our country that is what we are doing now if anyone one here complaining has ever taken time to watch the news they would know. Prime example Sept. 11th we were attacked on U.S and what did we do. We brought the fight to them. Now I am not going to glorify war and killing but I will glorify the defense of those that need it. Why is it that all becuase we are the U.S. military we cant help other around the world for the defense of their own lives? I myself am a 19 year old soldier in the Army and have been serving for almost three years, I have yet to deploy but I know when I do, I will go full knowing that my actions there will help someone else stay alive. For all military in this post you should know the best that we fight no matter what for those that need it and to secure their freedoms and the people posting the comments of this and every site out there, against or for the military, is just proof that we are stilling winning this fight. As for Jack, I have never met him, but can say that he is a hero and would probably still look the people in the eyes that are almost denouncing him on here, smile, and tell them to have a good day.

After seeing your posts I know this is hard for you to grasp, so pay attention. You paying attention? Good.

Its not so much about Iraq as it is that our military is there to ensure that say Russia (more so in the past) or China doesn't get the funny idea in their head to come over here and annex us and take away our ability to prosper and speak our mind against our government that people like you enjoy so much. It just happens that we have a government thats farked up and decided to to send us to the middle east for bullshiat reasons. You are still able to say what you want and "help our country prosper" because guys like Mr Lucas(RIP) and our current group of military members are there as a deterrent. Have we been under any real threat of losing our freedom lately? No, but again, its because our military is there as a deterent. That doesn't make our current batch of servicemembers less valuable or less worthy of our respect. If you don't like the country you prosper in or its government and military, you're more than welcome to leave it.
