Just goes to show how suggestible the American public is. People can't visualize on their own a black person wearing a suit and speaking President-ese, but now that there've been a few black actors portraying the President, it's something people can finally grasp mentally.

Pathetic.

Internet Disease: Because it was a mediocre movie that didn't justify the expense of a theatrical release, since it was destined for failure. The studio was smart enough to cut its losses and put it straight out on DVD.

1) I disagree it was mediocre
2) Since when did 'mediocre' disqualify a movie for theatrical release?

I like Mike Judge and just about everything that he's done, in fact I was one of the six people who saw "Office Space" in the theater. None of that changes the fact that "Idiocracy" wasn't very good. It definitely had its moments, like when the teleprompter read "shiat," but in general, it was a well-conceived but poorly executed movie.

It was only briefly in the theater. I think the reason is because it seems to support eugenics which are unpopular. And it really makes fun of stupid people in a way that no other movie does very well.

I love that movie.

So many good quotes...

This one still has me rolling.

Female Reporter:

"It started off boring and slow with Not Sure trying to bullshiat everyone with a bunch of smart talk: 'Blah blah blah. You gotta believe me!' That part of the trial sucked! But then the Chief J. just went off. He said, 'Man, whatever! The guy's guilty as shiat! We all know that.' And he sentenced his ass to one night of rehabilitation"

Hey can I use your time machine ... I wanna see who wins the 2012 Superbowl. By the way Sparky, if I refuse to hire you because of the color of your skin it's racism. However, once a black man has been nominated to run for leader of the free world ... well ... blacks can no longer claim that "special privilege" from ridicule.

I'm so tired of being put down by the man!

It's all in your motivations. And I KNOW that you understand that. But, to suit your argument you will equate topical, relevant humor to hateful bigotry.

People attacked Bush because he was an INDIVIDUAL who farked up. But, notice how his actions have NO effect on our perception of you or other white people. Meanwhile, you've just told us that because Barack Obama is a candidate for President, no Black person can ever be offended again. Wha?

/To quote myself, some white people see other white people as individuals and they see everybody else as...everybody else.

Yes, even better than Harrison "Get off my plane" Ford.

I would absolutely vote for David Palmer. In fact, I'd probably vote for Pedro Cerrano just because he looks a little like David Palmer...

This is a good question. 'Idiocracy' was a hit with crowds at SXSW a few years ago and just was held up...Another Luke Wilson movie called 'The Wendell Baker Story' suffered a similiar fate and went straight to DVD. Find "The Wendell Baker Story" and watch it, it gets the coveted Yossarian22 3 of 5 star rating.

Many great movies don't have the wide appeal to be worthy of theatrical films. Idiocracy is one of them. It could have done modestly well with a lot of advertising but that's taking on a big risk for a small reward. On the other hand, it's very inexpensive to release on DVD and make the small budget back. I think it was a good decision though I was disappointed that I couldn't see it in a big empty theater. Loved the movie, though. Every now and then I see things in society that provoke references.

My wife is seriously of the opinion that Obama's nomination very likely would not have been possible without David Palmer. Try as I might, I can't really disagree with her.

OK, so I know I'm "that guy" in this thread. The one who comes in and shiats all over everyone's favorite movie for no apparent reason. But this has been annoying me for a while so I'm just going to let it out.

I feel like people take Idiocracy way too seriously. Some people seem to actually believe the premise: that as a group, we're getting dumber because of the unchecked reproduction of certain undesirable populations. If you swapped out the white-trash family in the intro with a black family it'd be perfect for an early twentieth century audience. Now I thought we'd left social Darwinism in waste bin of history, but I guess not.

Idiots have always outnumbered and outproduced geniuses. That's just life. To believe that you and your generation are the pinnacle of human existence that will be torn down by the inferiors around you is simple megalomania.

/Now where'd I leave my Nomex...
