Anyone see that one reporter at the end of the video rasing his hands to ask a question?

Yep, the coach was clearly displeased with the situation to which he is personally responsible.
Hey coach, can you spell the word "accountability"?

You coach what you are given. Bavasi took over in 2003 after seasons with 116, and 93 wins:
2003 93-69
2004 63-99
2005 69-93
2006 78-84
2007 88-74
2008 21-39

Hardly building a winner. McClaren is saddled with Richie Sexson, Jojima (3 year extension!), Batista, Washburn, and Silva. He doesn't write the contracts.

Hiring Bavasi to run that FAILBOAT was a turrible idea.

THIS

Bavasi has done a terrible job putting together this team. He has reached a Bush-like level on incompetency. So many bad moves by that guy that its hard to count.

I really don't have anything against McClaren. I feel bad for the guy. Even a truly great coach couldn't do much with this team.

I still prefer him over Hargrove, and I always thought Melvin was a little pussy (even though hes doing well with the D-Backs).

Fire Bavasi, Lincoln, Armstrong, and McLaren. They're all in way over their heads and have no idea what they're doing. There is a reason McLaren was a bench coach for so long and never was approached for a head coaching job.

Furthermore, they need to trade Ibanez and salvage what they can get for a trade from him. Sexson is gone after the season so that's a plus but they just re-signed Johjima to a 3 year contract, WTF!!

It's not even the All-Star break and I'm already talking about next year. Welcome to being a Mariners fan!!!

I'm a bit of McLaren apologist, at least for now.

The biggest problem I see with this team is a total lack of discipline at the plate. Absolutely ZERO patience (i.e., working counts, etc.) Too many of the same-styled first-pitch-hacking singles hitters.

For that, I lay the blame squarely at the feet of Bavasi. Shiat, I'd let his dad run the club at this point and he died last month!

True, but he does give at-bats to Miguel Cairo and Willie Bloomquist. Bavasshat might deserve most of the blame, but McLaren simply isn't a good manager.

RogerDodger: Curious how bad weather works in that equation.

It was snowing on opening day. It didn't matter much at all except the people in the center field bleachers were getting snowed on. The cold weather does eat you up a little bit being a fan but as a player it shouldn't matter considering every other team comes to Safeco and sweeps the M's at the moment. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WEATHER and EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THE ENTIRE ORGANIZATION.

Beltre is tanking right now, yeah he gets a hold of a few pitches for sweet homers and yes, he is a great 3B but that is it with him this year.

Batista is a joke and should be a long relief pitcher not a starting pitcher.

Washburn, Sexson, Vidro, and Cairo can all DIAF.

I'm still being patient with Silva. He pitched 8 innings the other night while the offense floundered around for the entire game. He has the most "quality" starts on the team. He is a #4-#5 starter.

I also think it's hilarious that Lopez is the team's best hitter right now. Who would have thought that was a possibility at the beginning of the season, holy balls this offense sucks.

The front office needs to realize that most players of 30 suck and the younger players these days have so much talent and you can actually pay them a lot less to play than the players we have now that do nothing (see: Ryan Braun, Chase Utley, Dan Uggla, BJ Upton, and the list goes on with great talent under 30)

I'm glad they have Felix to build on and also Morrow who has been lights out lately. R.A. Dickey deserves to start considering he has been great in long relief.

Bring back Clement from Tacoma and have him play 1B. Sit Sexson.

Bedard will continue to suck numbers wise while he has a terrible defense behind him. Bedard's numbers were better last year because he had a pretty decent defense playing behind him last year (you can't go wrong with Brian Roberts at 2B and Miguel Tejada at SS, you can go wrong with Jose Lopez at 2B, Sexson at 1B, Ibanez in LF, and a platoon situation in right....Mike Morse as a RF are you f'ing kidding me, he dives for one ball out there and is out for the season now!!!

I enjoy watching ex-Mariners succeed once they leave Seattle. It happens all the farking time. Gillick is the GM for the Phillies and is enjoying great success. Randy Johnson is still mowing people down. Jason Varitek, David Ortiz, Carlos Guillen, Miguel Olivo, Ryan Franklin, and many many more. Yes, you waited for it....Ken Griffey Jr. He is mediocre at best because of his age and injuries but I hope this organization doesn't bring him back to play with this shiatty team. It's not 1995 anymore, there is no refuse to lose....there is only refuse to win.

I've been to 12 games this year and I will not go to one more, not even if it is a free ticket (beer costs $8.50). This year they also started a $5 premium ticket fee for games against the Red Sox, Yankees, and Opening Day. They can take that extra $5 and go fark themselves.

Don't get me wrong, the Mariners have produced talent and that's why I'm such a huge fan (EDGAR MARTINEZ), but since Lou left the entire team lost its spine. Nobody is accountable for the team and it hasn't been that way since he left. As much shiat as people like to give Ozzie Guillen, I would love to have that guy as the coach for a team like this. Granted, most people get tired of his antics but it got them a World Series ring in 2005, not just another wild card banner to hang up.

I usually just post retarded comments but I've been a fan of these guys forever, it's a touchy subject. There is nothing better than going to a live baseball game and seeing your favorite team play baseball....nothing.

I don't mind Ichiro or his contract. I do mind that the organization has never put anything behind the guy as far as a hitter to drive in more runs. He has 200+ hit seasons every year and plays excellent defense. You can't really ask much more from a guy. He has produced consistently over the years and has really been the only reason to watch the Mariners. Some people say that he holds the team back because of language, attitude, or whatever the excuse is but if the M's were winning then nobody would pick him apart.

hip_replacement: bedard is becrap so far.

I know you're trying to be funny but in all seriousness it's the defense that is letting him down. Yes, he had a little hip issue but overall the guy is a #1 starter, for most teams out there. The other night he pitched 4 innings and Beltre had a terrible error that would've ended the inning, instead it drove in a run. Then Lopez with 2 outs runners on first and second lets a ball go underneath his glove that should have been an out (it wasn't shown as an error....it should have been).

Bob Ondeeznuts: Washburn [snip] can all DIAF.

Some fellow Angels fans were upset that they let Washburn go because they thought it was for legal issues relating to a woman not of legal age that kind of got disappeared, but I was ecastatic. He was a fine pitcher, but in his last Angels season, it was obvious he was toast. He was a stud during the 2002 season, but, all things must pass. Oh how I LOL'd when he ended up with Mariners (sorry, Bob O.), that was perfect, a Manchurian pitcher.

Some people say that he holds the team back because of language, attitude, or whatever the excuse is but if the M's were winning then nobody would pick him apart.

Really? Some people think he holds them back? I don't care that he doesn't speak English --Vlad refuses to do it here in Anaheim of Los Angeles, just start hitting again dammit-- but is the rest of the team such delicate flowers that his language choices or attitude cause them to suck so bad? Wow.

It was said last season by a few local radio hosts. They're were questioning his leadership skills and they were saying that he couldn't lead this team because he can't speak the language. Christ on a crutch that was a dumb comment.

Methinks it's the manager's jerb to, you know, point it out.

But hey, after 39 losses in 60 games, he says he's finally sick of losing. Maybe he can now get in their faces when they play sloppy ball instead of sulking in the dugout the entire game.

2008-06-05 03:27:50 PM
Seattle fans whining? Who would have thunk it?

When you have a real GM, the rebuilding mode doesn't take half a decade.

When will teams learn that signing free agents (ESPECIALLY PITCHERS) to long term deals is not a fiscally sound decision? The vast majority of free agents are at or past their prime when they go on the open market and thus can be expected to regress during the life of their new contract.

The A's play in an ancient concrete football stadium in the middle of the ghetto with little recognition or respect from the local media but all they ever do is year after year reload and contend. Seattle is by no means a large market team, but with a monopoly on the fan base that encompasses the entire Northwestern United States, a beautiful ballpark, in a city that is the class of the West Coast, it is inexcusable they can't put together a competitive team.

Complaining about it being "too cold" is lame. How quickly some M's fans have forgotten about that concrete dump they played in for 22 years. Suck it up Nancy and bring a coat to the yard.

2008-06-05 03:36:35 PM
I am by no means a hardcore Ms fan, but I'm a fan. I think the most disappointing thing about this season isn't necessarily that they are so terrible, but that there was hope at the beginning. At least some expectation that the Ms would be in contention for the AL West this year.

His ERA in his last Angels season was fourth-best in the AL. That was certainly overachieving and largely due to good luck on balls in play, but "obvious he was toast" is certainly not the description for it. Truth is, Washburn is now what he was in 2002 and 2005: a league-average finesse starting pitcher who serves up a lot of flyballs and relies on his defense a lot.

I was at that game. Bedard sucked.

He couldn't get his breaking stuff over, so the Angels (without Vlad) were teeing off on his fastball. Yes, the defense let him down, but he didn't have it at all as well.

Dickey was great.

Who's complaining about the weather, of all things? Seriously, even Pac NW natives know their climate is mild. Most of the gripes I hear is that ballplayers don't want to play in the Pac NW. The reality is that Seattle needs to be more considerate of their relative location than most clubs, because a Mariner will travel a lot.

When they stocked up on guys who loved the Northwest (Edgar Martinez, Jamie Moyer, Jeff Nelson, John Olerud, Ichiro Suzuki, etc.), they won 116 games and no one was complaining.

This pack is a bunch of ass-covering whiners, and it shows.

mjoven1975: Seattle is by no means a large market team, but with a monopoly on the fan base that encompasses the entire Northwestern United States

You severely contradicted yourself there. I think a three state fan base plus a few Canadian fans is considered large market. It's not the largest but it definitely can be considered a large market.

puffy999: Do you even listen to yourself when you talk?

He is right. Players generally go downhill from 30 on. Most players come up at 23-25 and are with their original team for 6 years. Then they sign 2 or three year contracts. So younger players are on the market after 6 years, older players every 2 or 3. You will see a majority of FA signings being players over 30.

It is why a guy goes free agent at 27 or 28 they get signed higher (Manny, Arod, Beltran etc).

Go through the list of players who were signed this off-season, let me know which ones are supposed to be significantly better than before. Then compare that list to those who a already disappointing. Go back next year and the disappointing list is even better.

Arod is the exception. He's just that farking good.

2008-06-05 06:25:24 PM
puffy999

How have the Beltre and Sexson signings worked out for you? Free agent signings are generally not worth the risk, because players (steroid users not withstanding) tend to enter free agency in their prime and have left their prime by the end of a lengthy free agent contract. I'm sure I could name a lot more free agent busts than you can name free agent successes.

/The Mariners can feel free to take down that silly 116 wins banner anytime now. Having the best regular season record of all time and FAILING is nothing to be proud of

This is why I thought Bavasi's signing of Adrian Beltre was such a good move. Even that one didn't work out so great, although the contract is not awful.
