You'd think it would have gone septic a long time ago...

I'm stunned...he and the hospital are engaging in what seems like a civilized discussion regarding compensation. He's not planning on suing them.

I know it's in Japan, but still, hasn't the US attitude worn off on them more than that??

He's not planning to sue... definitely not American born.

Man japan is different then the U.S.

Not only is he not going to sue, but the hospital is going to try to compensate him already.

If that happened here both sides would be digging their heels in so deep....

Quite obviously that towel just got a little high pre-op.

Oh, I thought this was about Kennedy and they found one of those Guiness bar towels.

Sorta. Would have gone a little ways in explaining his ability to absorb drinks.

How do you not realize something like that for 25 years?

2008-06-04 02:05:12 PM
YOU IDIOTS!

That towel was stopping them from being able to track him! Going to have to get that tracking device out of his nose, now.

Drewnami

It happens. They leave surgical sponges, clamps and what not in there all the time. Just takes a while for the pain to get really bad.

/I'm sure they were used to having some chronic pain, but probably associated it w/ the original malady.

That was my first thought as well.

Reasonable human beings working things out without the court system and lawyers. Sheer craziness. The apocalypse is nigh!!!

FTFA: Japanese media reports said the man, who was not identified, still had his spleen removed.

I don't why I thought that was so funny. Anybody care to explain why I laughed my ass off when I read that?

2008-06-04 02:09:06 PM
This happened to my bro-in-law. He had his tonsils out when he was a kid and they sewed him back up with a surgical sponge still in the wound. He was less than thrilled.

2008-06-04 02:10:09 PM
If this was done on an episode of Dr. HOUSE, that poor guy would have been subject to 2 batteries of broad spectrum antibiotics, steroids, a testosternone neutralizing drug such as Lupron, a craniotomy, removal of his spleen and the gratuitius needle through the eye for a retina biopsy.

I came in here to say the same thing. That cracked me up! Was the spleen removal planned? The sentence makes it seem like it was a "well, while we're here!" kind of decision.

In the literature, it's known as either a "gossypiboma" or a "textiloma."

If you're operated on in a town called "Chiba," you're asking for it.

I am shocked the previous hospital officals came to him to apologize. Can you imagine if anyone in the US would do that? I think a lot of lawsuits could be avoided if this happened. Then again I believe in unicorns and rainbows w/ pots of gold at the end.

Footnote: There are more lawyers in Los Angeles than in the whole country of Japan. Hmmm.
