I never would've heard of the place if they hadn't whined about it.

"It's not the hoity-toity folks trying to figure out how to keep the world away," said Mayor Thomas Watson.

yeah it is...but you do have that right being private property and all..

these N. Oaks home listings all are over 1mil

dnrtfa but the hoity toity yuppie-trash town I moved out of (fark you Syosset/Jerhico, NY)

was so intent on its exclusivity that when AT&T, Verizon, TMobile, Sprint came to install cellsites, the town sued them because they were unsightly. So they packed their bags and left and SURPRISE!! they suddenly had no signal (they didn't before, but having it it suddenly was nice)

so then they demanded they put the cell towers back and they got the finger from the companies.

this is the same area that will ticket you for having a pickup truck out in your driveway during daylight hours because its unsightly.

farking long islanders!

Do they mean overhead views or street views? Overhead views are satellite and plane views. If they live in a no-fly zone then maybe, if not, STFU.

2008-06-02 07:31:06 AM
Seems to me that they have every right to make this request. If the roads and land are privately owned, then they can tell whoever they want to stay the hell out.

They mean street views.

Soon to be seen out of spite, the Google Slightly-above-streetview UAV. Let's see them lawyer their way out of that one.

Looks like Google removed the street-view images.

People like those "owners" don't dare go outside when it is raining for fear of their upturned noses filling up with water. They must not eat often due to being full of themselves. Fark 'em. If they want to be private, let 'em put up prison walls, gates, and keypads like all the other "exclusive" communities.

If I lived anywhere near these loons, I'd blast through there with open headers and Skynyrd crankin' at a few hundred watts just for laughs.

All you need is a jacked up truck with halogens and some camouflage. That, or just walk around with some non-white friends.

So, in other words, it's the hoity-toity folks trying to figure out how to keep the world away, right?

No lift on the truck (yet), but the Hemi's pretty loud even with the Magnaflows. I've seriously considered a HID conversion for the headlights, though. Seems like it would be fun to drive around with lights akin to an arc welder.

The cammo will have to wait. Right now, she's still a pretty "Inferno Red Crystal Pearl Coat".

I once did some computer work for a friend-of-a-friend who lived in a community like this. They made me park my 1992 MR2 in pretty nice shape and a decent paint job in their garage because they were afraid someone would see it. There was nothing about it that looked beat up or trashy, yet it was apparently too old and/or mundane to be seen. I haven't been back there. As for the people themselves... well, like I said, I haven't been back there.

The road I live on is privately owned. The cops can't even go on it unless they're called. I have to pay a fee every year for upkeep and so on, but I really couldn't give a crap if someone wants to see my house from google. What's the big friggin' deal?

RidersOfLohan: yeah because google will let anyone eat at their restaurants and park in their parking lots.

My daughter lives in North Oaks, it is a gated community, and other than the golf club, there are no "restaurants" or "parking lots". Given the multi-million dollar homes in there, and who owns them, I can understand their desire for privacy.

Good for you, but that doesn't give you the right to nose around in *my* private stuff.

I don't have anything illegal or snobby going on in my underwear drawer, either, but I don't want some asshat filming it.

My friend/boss actually lives in the exact community that this article is about, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies. I'll have to ask him about this next time I see him.

Yes, there are "private roads - no trespassing" signs as you enter the neighborhood, and a guard shack. I'm not sure what they do for snowplowing (it's farking Minnesota), I'm guessing they pay through the nose for a private company to do it.

Uh.. you kinda missed the point on this one, planes...

See, google won't let you eat in THEIR cafe', nor will they let you park in THEIR parking lot, so what gives them (google) the right...

BTW, I feel sorry for your daughter.

I'm sure I wouldnt like people like the ones that live in that town, but if they stay in their little precious town and leave me alone, I could care less. I'm sure they dont like me either. They just have better ways of keeping me from them, then the other way around.

Bunch of entitled farksticks, the lot of 'em. Much like Sodom and Gomorrah, if only one resident of North Oaks had as much as a single redeeming quality, the rest be absolved.

No. This place, along with Edina, need to disappear in a puff of radioactive vapor.

North Oaks officials stressed that they needed to enforce the city's law against trespassing, whether it be a motorist who isn't aware of the rules or the Internet search engine behemoth.

She said the driver likely didn't see North Oaks' no-trespassing signs. The city took down its gates 24 years ago.

Sounds like a bunch of "hoity-toity folks trying to figure out how to keep the world away" coupled with a prefabricated cash grab option. I wonder what would have happened if, instead of a company the size of Google with almost unlimited legal resources, some small business or individual took the pictures. The "hoity-toity folks" and their lawyers would be all over them.

The reality of wealthy neighborhoods is that less wealthy people like to take Sunday drives around these neighborhoods and look at the houses. People who live there don't like to be a freak show so they put up the gates.

2008-06-02 08:39:15 AM
Put the gates back up if you don't want people driving into your "private" community. If your roads look just like all the other roads and connect to the public street with no visible demarcation, then you should get laughed at by the court every time you complain about someone "trespassing."

Seriously. They're only getting away with it because they have all the money and political clout in the area. Anyone else would be told "put gates up if you don't want the public driving on your private streets."

"We don't want gates. We think they're ugly. We just want the court and the police to keep the undesirables out of our nice little neighborhood."

DIAF.

I've never found Google's street view to be all that useful. I don't know why, but I find it hard to recognize streets and landmarks, even in my ownneighborhood.

The map tool I've always found more useful, and slightly scarier, is the birdeye's view on maps.live. com. Not only can you see a home in good detail, but you can change the perspective. They have my home from 4 different angles, for which there really is no good reason.

2008-06-02 08:41:41 AM

2008-06-02 08:41:42 AM
Google should just draw some really whacky cartoon scenes to fill the neighborhood.

2008-06-02 08:42:36 AM
I wonder if they receive the kind of federal and state assistance available to most towns.

I don't really know if it's actually right to call it a town. It's an over-grown subdivision with a particularly controlling HOA.
