That's cute, but it's also scary & sad that mountain lions have pretty much lost their fear of man as we ever increasingly encroach on what was once their domain. It's a real problem in rural areas where I live.

Walk into any bar and you can see plenty of pairs of cougars drinking.

Locally they're more inclined to go after small animals like cats, dogs, goats. Even a small child is at risk, especially since cougars have been spotted on the grounds of some of the local rural schools.

Those are teenagers...they have no idea what to fear and are just learning, at this age, to kill from mom...assuming she hasn't been shot and they're on their own with finding housecats, squirrels and rabbits.

A naked ape doesn't stand a chance against a cougar, so I don't get the "fear of man" hubris. "Fear of man with a gun", maybe, but a lion has absolutely no reason to fear mankind and never did.

Anyway, it's nice that these cats were shot with a camera instead of a gun - clearly by people that moved to the country, as opposed to people that moved away from the city.

They shouldn't fear us, but IIRC they're damn solitary when older and tend to avoid us because they think we could hurt them. They have to think not only about food, but about not getting hurt too badly getting said food - and we're not normally it (too tall/large) unless they're very desperate.

And I'm wondering when the bewbie pics will start and how long it'll take images to be banninated.

theres a strange sense of irony of this comment. i believe the problem is youre in the rural area where they live... which you yourself noted.... ?

send some over to the suburbs around cleveland so they can eat the deer. the coyotes arent big enough for that sorta thing...

I see someone's already noted that those are sub-adults. They'll soon learn to stay a bit further away from humans, hopefully. Cougars tend to be pretty shy of people, as a general rule. We used to have a cougar in the Granite Dells in Arizona -- quite a large animal, by the size of its footprints. Nobody I knew ever actually saw the cat, though it ate my aunt's pet bunnies (it peeled open the rabbit hutch rather neatly). The amazing part was that my aunt had a St Bernard that slept on the back porch, and it never even woke up. Just as well - the dog was a big wuss and definitely would have come off the worse if it had encountered the cougar.

People have been killing cougars for millenia before guns were invented.

Many people, you included obviously, think that the gun is something magical. It isn't. Us naked apes are pretty damned effective without them.

Remember this: There is no animal living on this planet that man has not killed with nothing more complicated than a spear.

So, yes, cougars *WOULD* have had to fear humans before the gun made it's appearance on the continent. They would have been hunted if for no other reason than to show bravery, and they would have been harassed mercilessly whenever they appeared in order to keep them away from the women and children.

No shiat. The Cave Bear, Smilodon, Ground Sloth, and Wooly Mammooth would tend to agree. The living-in-harmony-with-nature Native Americans were as bloodthirsty as anyone else.

Assuming that kiddie pool isn't just an oversized, redneck birdbath and kids actually live there, I think I'd be a bit nervous. Of course, the parents should have known that before buying in that area.

Hmmmm.... That could be tough..... Probably not that many on Fark even know what a bow looks like. I think I saw one once, in a museum.

I actually would actually love to hunt a cougar, but I'd want to do it without dogs, and I am in no shape for that kind of a hunt. Hunting one without dogs is *DAMNED* tough, I hear.

That's true.

We have a bear in our area, and I've told my 4 year old that if he sees one he has to come inside immediately. Not that we let him out without adult supervision, we don't. Sometimes kids notice stuff before adults though.

If I had seen those two near my house, I might try and harass them away. Nothing to hurt them permanently, but something that would make them associate humans with unpleasant feelings. Maybe hit'em with a paintball, a blunt-tipped arrow, or something. Maybe an airhorn. Or a Mariah Carey song. Anything to make them associate people with pain.

The stupid thing about it is that it's probably against the law to do that. Which means these cats won't be afraid of humans, and eventually *SOMEONE* will be attacked. And it will be either a woman or a child*. Then the cat(s) will have to be destroyed.

*If you look at the list of fatal cougar attacks, it's almost all women or kids. Adult male humans are probably just big enough on average to make cougars wary of attacking them.

Perhaps they've lost their fear of man since we stopped shooting them on sight. I suppose if we started hunting them again everything would be better for them.
