Oh sorry, I guess it really should be all about the money.

Not all about the money, but decent musicians have a right to make a living at their craft.

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with musicians being compensated for their work and their art.

I'll go on the assumption that you are not a professional musician.

Sline: my flamebait comment was specifically referring to the keyboard's role in music production and sequencing. I'm not dissing the analog Moog synths or the Hammond B3s or the classic pianos at all, but focusing mostly on the limitless versatility in importing any sound into a keyboard console and playing it at will, making it the most useful instrument ever. You can play any type of guitar you want on the keyboard, and no one can tell the difference.

Hmmmm....I wonder if anyone's tried to do some sort of MIDI setup with guitars. Plug it in, load a sample, strum away....

...then there was this time a cross over stoner invited the stoners over to one of our band party/camping weekends. We proceeded to drink all the stoners under the table. We finished off all of THEIR weekends worth of booze in one night. Hah! Lamers!

The stoners never looked at us band geeks the same way after that.

I'm way band geek, playing trumpet and soprano in band then drum corps till I was 21...

PeteRose, let me also add Elvis Costello & The Attractions to a seriously rockin' keyboard-equipped band.

And if you can imagine Exile On Main Street without keys, then you can imagine an inferior record.

Cool. Some one got Some Tuba Player. The day isn't a total waste.

I was/am a trupet band geek for the past 15 years and an electric bass player for the past 12. I consider myself a damn good bass player too. I have been in many bands off all types and styles and have learned the hard way what makes or breaks bands. I wish my school had it's "rock" program on the go while I was there. It sucks (from my POV) to get together with other musicians, who may play fantastic, but don't have a clue as to how to run a productive rehearsal or how to keep their egos in check. For those kids who are serious about playing in a band and making it work ($) for them, this is a big help.

However, when it all boils down, you don't need to make money or be the best band in the world to have fun... which is the most important part of music.

As for keyboards, rock wouldn't be the music it is today without them. They are extremely versatile, and music written (originaly) on keyboards is so much more interesting (IMO). Just one song usually has more chords in it than I woud play all night without it. And for faking music you don't know live, a keyboard players left hand is a godsend (assuming they know the song). I once make $500 for 30 min. of faking it (take that Talldarknstinky).

But I would never be a keyboard player because they don't get the chicks.

We would jam in Roy's garage...

You'd also be amazed at what a well-timed flute comoposition or two will do for a rock song that needs a "haunting" feel.

2002-11-25 07:52:22 PM
Contrary to popular belief, I do not know what a "comoposition" is.

2002-11-25 07:59:48 PM
Anything like a Kama Sutra position?

"the youths have learned about 20 cover songs"

Perfect! I'm a dude who runs a crappy sports bar on the outskirts of town and were looking for bands just like this!

2002-11-25 08:34:38 PM

Any band with a keyboard is not a rock band.

I smell troll. No rational person with even the smallest shiat nugget's knowledge of RNR would even dare utter such truck.

I see he got banned, too?

"The club now has 12 members and two bands - "The Hawks," mostly made up of freshmen, and "Tuck and Roll," which includes mostly sophomores and juniors..."

Up next on Fark Behind the Music: Little did "the Hawks" know that their fate would suddenly change when a young student named Bobby Zimmerman joined the club...

[shameless]

BTW, I play the electronic sax in my band and I will rock your freaking world. Rock. Your freaking. World. Thank you.

It'd be great if the two bands had a gang-war type thing.

2002-11-25 11:09:38 PM
Okay, I suck. I'm a singer/songwriter (acoustic guitar) and my only paid gig so far has been $50 for two hours. Us singer-songwriters don't get no respect.

2002-11-25 11:31:04 PM
Speaking of keyboards, whateverhappened to Lee Michaels?

speaking of band geeks, check out malicio.us/JuTang

As a rock keyboardist, I resent the anti-keyboard sentiments in some of these posts. A rock band which includes a piano, organ, or synth is very capable of rocking your pants off. Sometimes after my band plays a show, the audience will not be wearing pants because we rocked them right off. That's how hard we rock.

FUN FACT: I went to school with the woman who wrote that article. Yay.

2002-11-26 12:26:52 AM
What's wrong with keyboards? So everyone here thinks Depeche Mode sucks too?

2002-11-26 12:29:52 AM
I play guitar, bass and keyboards. All three can rock, if the player knows how to use the instrument.

BTW, I got this amazing old analog synth a few years back, it could do just about anything I asked. A few months ago it died on me, and I haven't been the same since. :(

2002-11-26 12:30:59 AM
oh so sorry to have stumbled on to this thread so late
this anti-keyboard sentiment is just plain ignorance
you would simply be limiting yourself
any good musician will tell you that the piano is a great base for which to expand to other instruments, and on which to write songs
but maybe ability and songwriting don't figure into your idea of good rock bands
but good god man, the beatles

Hey ChrisPC

What kind of keyboard was it? I've got one of these, and they're badass. They're only about 300 or so on Ebay:

2002-11-26 01:28:49 AM
rock with keyboards => Radio farkin' Birdman => Farfisa.

DaNightTripper You are amazing. Save the last waltz for me.

OK, for the record, I'm a Singer/Songwriter who plays (in no particular order):
Bass, guitar, keys (Piano), drums, most wind instruments (specializing in low brass i.e TUBA my friend calls me Opus)
and I am in no particular order. Look for my CD in about a year. (I think they oughta let a tuba take the bass in a rock band, if they can find a tuba player that can handle it. Ian Anderson did it with a flute, why not a tuba?)I'm also a band geek from the word go. Let the kids play, they will probably tap their creativity and turn out some good music.

Jerry Lee Lewis
Little Richard
Professor Longhair
and dare I mention an early Elton John recording called 11/17/70.

oh yeah and Barry Manilow

Keyboards are great in Rock bands. Anyone who thinks otherwise should go and buy any ELP (Emerson Lake and Palmer). I have seen ELP live several times and I am amazed at the shiat that Kieth does to his Hammond B3 and his synths. Who knew you could create music with a B3 and a Bowie knife? Keys are very important to rock-n-roll, at least for my musical tastes.

2002-11-26 01:05:18 PM
Yah, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble had a kick-ass keyboard player as well. Nah, they didn't rock at all *sarcasm*. Asshat.

2002-11-26 08:05:44 PM
I play keyboard/grand piano/guitar/bass/trumpet/drums (whichever is necessary) in a blues band. There aren't any band geeks there and lemme tell ya, when you're trying to improvise a 2 minute solo weed is good.

2002-11-26 08:06:24 PM
Just make sure to wear sunglasses on stage.
