This survey proves that at least 14.2% of Britons are morons.

2002-11-25 03:55:43 AM
Outrage! They didn't mention Cliff Richards!

2002-11-25 03:55:58 AM
OK, I finally got it to work for me. Why is Diana in the top three?

2002-11-25 03:58:38 AM
Princess Dye beat out Newton???? WTF?? She was nice and all, but just because she died doesn't mean she's great.

and where's Owen Nolan? The only all star NHL hockey player to ever come from Great Britain?

2002-11-25 04:00:06 AM
Nelson only rated an 8 on the bravery scale?

2002-11-25 04:00:27 AM
My bad, Cliff Richard is 56. Oh and King Arthur is 51. I was actually being sarcastic about Cliff Richard but surprise there he is on the list.

2002-11-25 04:01:34 AM
Diana's hittability score ain't showing up. Then again, neither is Churchill's. Or anyone else's. Feh.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) is rightly admired as one of the greatest of all engineers. His leading role in the transport revolution of the nineteenth century, and especially in the building of the Great Western Railway, left an indelible mark on the British landscape. His achievements captured the imagination of his contemporaries and subsequent generations. His colossal energy and determination to carry out projects on the largest scale to an extremely high standard set him apart from his rivals.

Brunel tells the story both of the engineer, who followed his father Marc into what was then a new profession, and of the man. It explores his successes and failures, at home and abroad, including both the broad gauge GWR and the SS Great Eastern, bringing out Brunel's imagination, drive and inventiveness. Above all, it sets him in the context of his times, showing both what made him who he was and how he made the most of the great opportunities offered to him.

thats what amazon.com says about Brunel

46 Boy George
48 William Wallace
49 Sir Francis Drake

I don't understand their method of ranking. They're idiots, right?

2002-11-25 04:06:47 AM
wasn't churchill an alcoholic?

that said, i would have voted for lewis carroll, that crazy pedophile.

2002-11-25 04:07:03 AM
Well, this poll is pretty silly. Churchill was awesome, though.

2002-11-25 04:08:36 AM
Andronbray: I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and say YES.

2002-11-25 04:08:58 AM
I was worried for a while Diana might have won that:
Newton - Discovered gravity
Darwin - Discovered evolution
Diana - Spelt her own name correctly --- at least twice.

2002-11-25 04:09:49 AM
Kmad:

Brits dont care about ice hockey. That's why.

2002-11-25 04:12:59 AM
I see the name Richard Burton way down the list and I'm afraid that it is the actor and not Sir Richard F. Burton the explorer.

2002-11-25 04:13:17 AM
what did beckham rank?
britons are asshats...
then again, if it was in canada, who would win? pamela anderson or bryan adams or some other stupid famous farkhead? bah.

2002-11-25 04:14:26 AM
andonbray - i'm pretty sure it's richard burton the actor in all his mega-chest-haired, slimy-voiced, shakespeare destroying hideousness

2002-11-25 04:14:44 AM
"Don't talk to me about naval tradition. It's nothing but rum, sodomy and the lash." -Sir Winston Churchill

quite honestly, i'm fond of all three.

2002-11-25 04:18:51 AM
mmm, sodomy

2002-11-25 04:19:10 AM
Churchill gets an 8 for Genius? And Lennon has a 6! OMFG WTF(hehe)!!!!

William Wallace wasn't British, Pah!

Princess Di wasn't that great, did she invent gravity (Newton) or personally kill Hitler (Churchill), NOPE!

2002-11-25 04:20:04 AM
Bobbette - David Beckham came in at 33, narrowly beating Thomas Paine (34) and kicking the shiat out of Chalres Dickens and his weak showing of 41.

2002-11-25 04:20:29 AM
for someone with a doctorate, you should know that gravity was never invented.

2002-11-25 04:21:07 AM
I voted for Churchill after the first documentary.

"...Lady Astor, the American-born socialite and first female Member of Parliament got so exasperated at a dinner party one night that she told him: "Winston, if I were your wife I'd poison your soup." He replied, "Nancy, if I were your husband I'd drink it..."

2002-11-25 04:22:13 AM
Bobbette
what did beckham rank?
britons are asshats...
then again, if it was in canada, who would win? pamela anderson or bryan adams or some other stupid famous farkhead? bah.

So does that mean it's your turn to wear the hat?

2002-11-25 04:23:26 AM
For the English chroniclers he was an outlaw, a murderer, the perpetrator of atrocities and a traitor.

Behold 48th Greatest Brition EVER!

2002-11-25 04:23:34 AM
we wear tuques of our own accord in canada, we're already sporting the asshat.... britons, on the other hand, embody the very spirit of the hat.

2002-11-25 04:23:39 AM
I'm more concerned about Cromwell, this is the guy who went on to massacre all those catholics in Ireland, his legacy certainly lives on, in the hatred against Britain we see today.

Compassion = big fat zero, I should think.

2002-11-25 04:26:04 AM
If it was Canada, Pierre Trudeau would win. wayne gretzky would be up there.

2002-11-25 04:28:14 AM
tony blair beat out both jane austen and geoffrey chaucer. the occupants of poets corner in westminster cathedral, or whatever it is called (forgive me, it's late and my memory sucks) are probably spinning in their graves.

hey, what's up with richad branson getting a spot? i hate that guy...

2002-11-25 04:28:56 AM
*shudders* wayne gretzky... i hate that guy

2002-11-25 04:29:01 AM
Doesn't make sense. If you compare the scores given for Bravery/Leadership etc., Diana gets lower scores than Darwin for everything except equal for Compassion. So how come she is higher? Stupid farking scoring system just doesn't work.

2002-11-25 04:31:42 AM
Sickening that that blonde vegtable was even allowed to be nominated. Really, the only thing she ever did was to look pretty then die young.

Newton was the man. Anything any engineer has built since Newton, has made use of the great man's work. Darwin would come a distant second, with Aelfred the Great hanging around on the horizon somewhere.

Music-wise Jim Marshall >>>>> John Lennon

2002-11-25 04:35:33 AM
Cromwell.. well.. I'm certainly not a Puritan Apologist, but he did believe in England so much that he executed her By-The-Grace-Of-God-Our-King because he was a Traitor to his people..

2002-11-25 04:37:07 AM
YOU CAN ALL FVCK OFF! I DIDN'T EVEN RANK! WHAT THE FVCK IS SO WRONG WITH NOMINATING ME?!

YOU'RE ALL CVNTS!

2002-11-25 04:39:50 AM
I think the strange scores are because you're only allowed to vote for one winner, but can give the marks out of 10 to everyone.

That suggests Diana got low marks from everyone who voted for someone else (presuming people wouldn't be so stupid as to give low marks to the person they voted for). Basically, the idiots block-voted.

Maybe it should have been done with single transferable vote or something.

2002-11-25 04:40:38 AM
Newton is certainly worthy of greatness, a pity his later years were spoilt by the squabble with Leibniz, not content with discovering the laws of motion and gravity he wanted calculus as well.

Newton was also Master of the Royal Mint in later life, he put the little grooves in coin edges.

2002-11-25 04:40:39 AM
VonEvilstein: she always had great eyeliner. for that alone, she deserves top spot!

2002-11-25 04:41:53 AM
MtMan900: You can count?!

2002-11-25 04:42:19 AM
Bobbette: so did Boy George, he only came 46th.

2002-11-25 04:43:10 AM
Did guy fawkes get on that there list?

2002-11-25 04:44:20 AM
This is complete bullshiat. Leilani from Page3 is the greatest Brit ever.

2002-11-25 04:49:59 AM
I'd definitely say it was John Cleese, Michael Palin, Rowan Atkinson, Justin Sullivan, Me, Sid Viscious, Nell McAndrew, Melinda Messinger, Jo Guest, and Jeffrey Archer.

In fact, Jeffrey Archer should get it hands down.

What about the guy who hosts whats it called, the show where the best singer wins the record deal, fk its late all i can think of is 'sopranos'

2002-11-25 04:58:51 AM
The Top 100: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/programmes/greatbritons/list.shtml . Some of it is mad - how did Aleister Crowley (occultist) get there?!?! AND BOY FARKIN' GEORGE?!?!?!?!

And I'm embarressed to be British when I see Diana in the top 10. She did some good stuff, but so do thousands, if not millions, of other people. She was NOTHING SPECIAL, and how so many people can vote for her because she had a car crash at an early age, I don't know :(

Jon.

>wasn't churchill an alcoholic?

Always remember that I have taken more out of alcohol,
than alcohol has taken out of me. --Winston Churchill

Sir, you're drunk! --Lady Astor to Winston Churchill;
Yes, Madam, I am. But in the morning, I will be sober
and you will still be ugly. --His reply

2002-11-25 05:03:26 AM
This poll simply demonstrates that people in groups (voters) are stupid. only individuals are intelligent. look at the American president!

2002-11-25 05:05:32 AM
Since they'd never have voted for Gerard Winstanley, or even Milton, it should have been Cromwell, despite the massacre at Drogheda. Better war time leader than Churchill too.
