(Baltimore Sun)   It's hard to know what to tackle first in a city with 300 murders per year, high teen pregnancy rates, rampant heroin use and the world's most stabby football team. Baltimore's mayor chooses... *facepalm*   (baltimoresun.com) divider line 139

Dear Baltimore,

Find the lady whose idea this was, stand her up, and put yer metaphorical boot in her coont for wasting time creating problems to fix rather than fixing the oh so many existing ones.

Let the kids get cancer later if they so choose. Just focus on giving them a lifespan long enough and pleasant enough so that it seems like a bad choice rather than the only one.

Didnt they do this in Philly?
And while cigarette use by teens and young adults has decreased in recent years, cigar smoking continues to be a "serious and growing health problem," said city Health Commissioner Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein.
Yeah, cause everyone uys blunts for the tobacco...This is just another chapter in the war on drugs. Now those kids are gonna have to use coke cans and apples. Another victorious battle.

Baltimore's proposed ban would require shop owners and clerks to sell the cigars in packs of five or more. City officials said that could discourage youths because a pack would be more expensive.

Oh, Jesus. So they're not even banning them, they're just trying to possibly kind of maybe discourage youths by selling them in a pack of five. Which is like saying you want to cut down on Coke sales by selling it in six-packs only.

If you're going to be outraged about something like this, at least take steps to really do something about it, rather than just pussyfooting around. Idiots.

2008-05-29 06:20:22 PM
Screw those shiatty cigars. "100% Natural Tobacco Wrapper" my big fat hairy ass. "Primarily natural tobacco with non-tobacco fillers????!?!?"

I'm thinking hell no.

2008-05-29 06:20:34 PM
Dr.Knockboots: So instead of buying 1 loose cigar..
Smokers will buy 6/10 (or however many are in a pack) and then have more cigars at their reach.

Am I missing something here, or wouldn't having more cigars on hand potentially increase usage? Or are they banking on the fact that because you'd have to buy them in a pack, that the increased price would make smokers not buy them? If the latter, they grossly underestimate the power of addiction.

It's a free lesson in how to save money for a goal. This is just another example of really slick propaganga from Big Money.

Boy, that was perhaps the most roundabout route to Philly ever.

Perhaps you saw Camden? Which is, in fact, worse than most any third world nation I've ever been in (and I've been to Equatorial Africa).

That's 100% bullshiat. I'm a cigar smoker, and I can assure you, I'm not addicted like cigarette smokers. If I'm on a cross country flight, I'm not jonesing for an Ashton VSG when we land.

The only time I have anything resembling a craving is when I smell somebody else smoking one.

You said it.

A while ago, the Seattle City Council tried to ban the sale of cheap wine (Thunderbird, Night Train, etc.) in Pioneer Square.

I hate it when the bums hassle me there, but is that really their best solution? How about enforcing vagrancy laws? Arrest them if you have to.

Naturally, this is the same city council that wasted over $1 million for public toilets, which became havens for crackheads, junkies, and hookers that are so disgusting, Quagmire wouldn't even touch them.

I think you meant DC, not Philly, because thats pretty much what it looks like in Baltimore along the tracks.

Philadelphia is 2 hr southwest of NYC. Baltimore is 2 hr southwest of Philadelphia. You took a seriously scenic route between NYC and Philadelphia.

Same here in Madison. They biatch and moan about the bums and tell the public not to give them money, yet they spend a shiatload of money building heated, covered bus stops. Who did you guys really think was going to take over those bus stops? The homeless crack heads, or the people waiting for the bus on their way to work?

City Council members, who have recently taken stands against trans fats and indoor smoking in public places, have expressed support for the ban. "This is just a continuing effort, and the bottom line is that with the layering efforts of prohibitions on these products, people will eventually quit," said Councilman Robert W. Curran, who led the push to enact the city smoking ban
