FTFA - The Obama campaign now says that Obama was referring to his great-uncle on his mother's side, and the camp in question was not Auschwitz, but Ohrdruf, which was part of the Buchenwald camp system in Lower Saxony.

Meh - this sounds like a case of someone "misspeaking." Right situation, wrong name.

Guy Innagorillasuit: Like the difference between Shiite and Sunni? Or do you mean important stuff like who did what in WWII?

or how about that his staff is filled with lobbyists for dictators and criminals?

nope, lets stick with the details of a story about his great uncle in WWII

Trolly headline, Murdoch media, you don't even have to click to know what this article is about.

But I don't think we've had our Obama-based Two Minutes Hate today.

This should fit that bill nicely...

2008-05-28 02:37:18 PM
This might mean something if Obama had set out to speak about his uncle's experience. But instead, he was at a Q&A, which veered towards veteran benefits and PTSD and he related a story, but used a wrong name. It was a spontaneous remark and the underlining point (take care of soldiers with PTSD) was made.

Shouldn't a Presidential candidate, like, know stuff?

Yeah, they *should* know stuff. Some do, some don't, and some are unencumbered by the need to.

That point, and the point that a Harvard poli sci grad doesn't know much about the end of the Second World War, which has pretty much been the driver for international relations since then.

not to mention he actually said that his uncle was among the first troops to go to auschwitz, and only used the word liberate in relation to "the concentration camps", which buchenwald certainly qualifies for.

he didn't even misspeak. it looks like some people in the media need to visit conjunction junction.

Auschwitz is located in southern Poland, near the city of Krakow. It was liberated by the Red Army on January 27, 1945. At the time, U.S. armies were still on the western borders of Germany, a thousand miles away, regrouping after the Battle of the Bulge. The Americans had not even crossed the Rhine at this point.

This guy is totally missing the point.

There's no way I can vote for Barrack Hussein Obama now. He's clearly a liar. And an appeaser.

How many stories in your family are between 60% and 100% bullshiat? I'm pretty sure I know about a dozen family stories that wouldn't even make credible mythology. If I happen to repeat one, I don't think that should prevent me from being President (it's the nitrous habit and radical libertarian views that should prevent me from being President).

So a mildly interesting comment about one of Obama's relatives that subtly reinforces his Merican cred has been elevated to a Repub desperation talking point - thereby insuring that thousands of people who would never have heard the original speech will now know that Obama's uncle fought the Nazi's.

What have we had out of this 3, 4 greenlights?

Gawd everything they try to throw against him he turns to his advantage.

Hell, even his very name suggests terrorism!

This is a load of crap. Big deal- he was wrong (or lied) about something an obscure relative did. That's no worse than Clinton's "sniper fire" or Bush's many gaffes.

If this Michael Dobbs isn't related to Lou, due to the rampant amount of douchebaggery required to say "3 lying liars for significant factual errors" when someone said the wrong name while telling a true story, I'd be shocked.

2008-05-28 04:03:16 PM
Before hearing from the Obama campaign, I gave the candidate four Pinocchios for this howler. I am subtracting one Pinocchio in view of the explanation that Obama confused the two concentration camps and that the underlying story was accurate. Three Pinocchios for "significant factual errors."

Yeah.

Because Obama's intent was to mislead. Because we can all agree that no one should get any credit for liberating Buchenwald, for Pete's sake. He obviously tried to gain points by claiming it was Auschwitz.

/sigh

When it's all they have, they'll take what they can get, regardless of how dumb it makes them appear when they blow it out of proportion.

2008-05-28 04:07:48 PM
Yup, and now GOP goons are attacking that 89th regiment website asking him if it really is Obama's great uncle. The webmaster told them to go back under the rock they crawled out from, and they began to claim he was a "Sheehan."

Yeah, I like how the author uses "howler" and follows that up with "underlying story was accurate". What a f*cking douche.

For what it's worth, I had forgotten Auschwitz was in Poland. Still, getting that specific about war stories can sometimes get you in trouble. He should be a bit more careful about that stuff.

The guy says "Auschwitz" instead of "Buchenwald" while telling a FACTUAL anecdote concerning PTSD and his opponents are trying to make a big deal about it.

That's some reeky desperation, right there.

How many people even know that there was a camp at Buchenwald? I would wager that number is a tiny fraction of the number that know there was a camp at Auschwitz.

Whenever I travel any significant distance from home, I tell people that I live in Chicago. But that's not correct since I actually live in Arlington Heights. I tell people Chicago since most people have heard of it and have an idea of where it is. No where near as many have heard of Arlington Heights. Its simply much easier that way.

Considering we elected a president who couldn't name the capitals of Taiwan, Pakistan, India or North Korea, I predict this won't mean a whole lot.

Lionel Mandrake: That's some reeky desperation, right there.

My guess is that they're trying to deflect media attention away from the allegations made in the book that was recently written by Tom Cleveland, the former White House press secretary.

Cagey B: Considering we elected a president who couldn't name the capitals of Taiwan, Pakistan, India or North Korea, I predict this won't mean a whole lot.

This is when I started to loathe GWB: When that reporter who jumped on him before the 2000 election, asking if he knew the names of certain foreign leaders and he flailed. Yes, it was an ambush and all that, but would have hoped that a President could do better on a pop quiz like that.

But the loathing began with his response to the reporter when asked if he could name the General who now led Pakistan (Musharraf), and Bush replied, "No...can you?"

Right then I thought, "this guy is about 6 years old, emotionally. Holy shiat...we could be in trouble."

I heard it was just a pamphlet that Ted Cleveland (former junior assistant to the backup co-vice deputy press secretary) xeroxed in his mom's basement.

Ah that's right, it was the leaders, not the capitals.

For crying out loud. He misspoke. Getting the name of an infamous concentration camp mixed up with a less well-known one is a non-issue. But the Republicans and Hillary trolls are obsessed with this.

We didn't hear about the sniper fire incident for weeks? Same thing only this time it is "your" guy who lied.
