Okay, but who would make the best Barcode Battler character?

2008-05-26 12:34:18 PM
lame

2008-05-26 12:35:37 PM
That's probably not the best possible use of six months....

2008-05-26 12:36:19 PM
Maybe its just me, but I think the Jesus one took more than 940 barcodes.

2008-05-26 12:40:52 PM
I'm not amazed...

2008-05-26 12:41:10 PM
Actualy, I saw some better ones just this morning.

2008-05-26 12:41:15 PM
And no Subby warning about the Oprah pic.

/Oh the huge media pig annity.

Yakivegas: Maybe its just me, but I think the Jesus one took more than 940 barcodes.

I think they meant 940 different barcodes, many of which were reused.

But yeah, the journalist could've been a bit more clear about that.

Weak. It's a lame rip-off of ASCII art. The guy looks like a douche as well.

The Daily Fail does it again!

But were you dizzied??

Parasitic_Spin: That's probably not the best possible use of six months....

that took 6 months? damn, held my attention for 6 seconds.

2008-05-26 12:44:20 PM
I'm pretty sure one of those image to ASCII generators could be modified to do this automatically

2008-05-26 12:44:33 PM
Remember the guy who paints with "toast"? How about the Japanese rice paddy "paintings"? Crop circles are often fun. Banksey?

I actually like pop art but these portraits really do make you dizzy. They are best viewed from a distance--I hope you have an optical mouse so you can view from across the room.

2008-05-26 12:47:27 PM
Did anyone else notice the Elvis picture having a very slight illusion of moving when you focus on different sections of the pic?

/Maybe because of the angled bar codes?

//Maybe because I am wearing reading glasses?

///Maybe because the 4th beer is kicking in?

2008-05-26 12:48:00 PM
I'm not impressed. A few hours with barcode generating software, a few hours with mosaic software, then a few hours touching up in Photoshop. 6 days max, not 6 months.

How does he look like a douche? Is it the arrogant smile or the "I'm an artist" cigarette pose?

FTFA: can take him up to six months to complete just one of the designs

Shenanigans - SOMEONE needs to learn to code - or admit.... he has already learned to code and spent 5 months on a bender

6 Months? You could totally whip up a program to do that for you in fractions of a second.

But then it'd be more like a mass-produced car instead of a limited-run special-edition Porsche 911.

i've done a few time-wasting projects but you don't see me framing and displaying them.

It's not Drew, it's barcode.com.

/yes, I know many of them aren't barcodes, that's GIS's fault
//whipped up in 5 minutes in MacOSaiX

I welcome our new barcode overlords. Cant wait until soon everyone has a barcode tatoo!

I find this guy extremely attractive for some reason. Maybe it's the artist thing.

Well, THAT was good for a seizure!

ooOOOOOooOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo...............

Oh, and his art is lame. A program could do that for you, and it would probably look better. Neat idea, but not worth wasting 10 years on...maybe 5 minutes. It's just a ripoff of the picture mosaics and Chuck Close.

Gotta admit, this guy doesn't quite have the skills to be an artist. Oh, I'm not talking about what he makes. The quantifiable output is not how one is judged. I'm talking about his court game.

You've gotta be fast on your feet. "This barcode elivs uses barcodes tilted at a 45 degree angle because his records were on 45's" - don't bring that trash. You'll get shut out!

"The precise angle of 43 degrees was arrived at by introspecting on the nature of sorrow when exposed to a chronological sequence of pictures depicting the gradual emptying of a jar of fruit preserves. Obviously, it had to be apricot, since you would not have been able to find such sublime undertones in your standard pithy jellies such as grape or strawberry." - Someone just made a triple-double!

He's not even sure what his 'art' is supposed to represent! Blasphemy! He's supposed to know, never tell anyone, but just give hints, and mock those who guess! That's what avant-garde art is all about!

Maybe if he made the next one out of eggs with barcodes on them, you know, to represent the antithesis of rebirth and the melding of organic and inorganic. Jus' off the top o' my head.

the bar codes all actually do something. ftfa: "Each Bruce Lee bar code plays a kung-fu fight scene or scan Arnold Schwarzenegger bar codes to play corresponding movie trailers."

that's actually pretty cool.

It is very very weird that less than 24 hours ago I saw the 'jesus bar-code' book in a store here in L.A. and of the bazillion books there, I only looked at his, and like 2 others. And it's not like it was "featured" there - just on the cases with a ton of other art books. Synchronicity!

/okay, boring to you, freaky to me.

Why do people assume that anyone with a negative opinion is lazy and uncreative?

E Arkhe:

A negative opinion is one thing, but these threads always fill up with comments like "what a waste of time," or "art sucks" or "my computer/kid/dog could do that," or "that guys looks queer" etc.

Those are the people I am addressing.

But his tie like that... it means he has twice the dick.

6 months? Pffft, a computer could do that in like 1 second. Real artwork takes a little more inventiveness nowadays.

I recently dug out my old Barcode Battler and my 9 year old was really keen to learn how to play. An hour later it was "Is that it?", and it is back in the box for another 20 years.
