Just as with foods, plants, medications, etc., sensitivity to something DOES NOT equal an allergy. I have food, plant & medication sensitivities & I have food, plant & medication allergies. The severity & reactions are very different. Sensitivities are annoying, allergies can be deadly.

Bathia_Mapes: sensitivity to something DOES NOT equal an allergy

This. 100 times this.

An allergy is your body having an immune response to some substance, it's not just that you feel a bit uncomfortable if you come into contact with it.

I would LOVE to see a double blind test done with these "electro-sensitive" people in court.
If you can "feel" a 2.4Ghz EMF created by a <100mW wifi unit, you'd probably shiat your pants whenever someone turned on a microwave with no food in it.

If any of those yahoos actually used a spectrum analyzer and saw how much electromagnetic radiation they were exposed to on a daily basis, their head would probably explode.

THIS X 1000

I believe it's impossible for any human to detect 2.4 GHZ in the milliwatt per m^3 range. These folks are the same people who won't eat food from a microwave because it's been exposed to "radiation". Meanwhile they see no problem living down the street from a radio station or TV station pumping out 50,000 to 1,000,000 watts of power. Or holding a cellphone to their head pumping out 3 watts or driving under power transmission lines which produce a magnetic field so intense they'll light a florescent light tube without it being plugged in.

A parent at our local primary school [kids age 4-11] has made the headteacher take wireless broadband out of the KS1 [age 4-7] classrooms.

Because there's no long-term research in its effects and it might curdle their brains.

Mmmmm....curdled baby-brains.....

Can you imagine the crazy routes to work they have to take to avoid all the cell towers these days.

Con_Authority: Or holding a cellphone to their head pumping out 3 watts

Handheld phones are about .6 watts. Bag phones are the ones that are about 3 watts.

Other than that, good post

Con_Authority: driving under power transmission lines which produce a magnetic field so intense they'll light a florescent light tube without it being plugged in.

I so freaked out my neighbor by showing her that. I laugh at her regularly because she is the type to spend $20 extra to buy special florescent lights that don't give off bad negative radiation.

/She swears the don't give her a headache like the normal ones do.

TFA: The city attorney hopes to have a legal recommendation by the end of the month.

Legal Recommendation: Laugh heartily and ignore them.

IANAL, but that seems logical to me.

That's probably because of either a different temperature of light that those bulbs give off, or she's a complete moron who fell for the placebo effect.

Con_Authority: driving under power transmission lines which produce a magnetic field so intense they'll light a florescent light tube without it being plugged in.

Hahahah now see, I'm tempted to try this by taking a flourescent bulb and holding a foot or two from the power line(obviously not with my bare hands, heh)

2008-05-23 09:05:34 AM
So someone with a rare skin condition in which they cannot be exposed to light could now sue to keep all public buildings dark?

I'm allergic to idiots, can we ban them from public buildings? That would clear up the problem, I think.

I'm allergic to douchebags; whenever I encounter one, my blood pressure and stress level goes up, I get angry and uncomfortable.

Therefore, I am suing to have all douchebags removed from the planet and shot into the sun.

We have a similar group of douchenozzles at my place of work. We had a spat of older employees kicking the bucket (the usual stuff - strokes, heart failure, etc) and they started blaming the buildings. So, we had to spend assloads of money having the buildings checked for radon and other stuff like that. Result: some moldy areas were identified and fixed and we all got crappy raises because a small vocal bunch of wackjobs.

2008-05-23 10:22:56 AM
The city attorney hopes to have a legal recommendation by the end of the month.

That would be premature. First they need a scientific recommendation which declares the claim stupid and incorrect. Then a pyschological recommendation that the complainers be removed from open society. Then we can get to the legal stuff.

The World Health Organization did some studies on Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS).

"A number of studies have been conducted where EHS individuals were exposed to EMF similar to those that they attributed to the cause of their symptoms. The aim was to elicit symptoms under controlled laboratory conditions.

The majority of studies indicate that EHS individuals cannot detect EMF exposure any more accurately than non-EHS individuals. Well controlled and conducted double-blind studies have shown that symptoms were not correlated with EMF exposure."

"EHS has no clear diagnostic criteria and there is no scientific basis to link EHS symptoms to EMF exposure. Further, EHS is not a medical diagnosis, nor is it clear that it represents a single medical problem."

If they can detect it, then they are operating in the 2.4 GHz spectrum and have to take whatever interference is there, just like it says in the FCC regulations.

What is the falloff on energy for those things anyways?

This reminds me of the time someone told me my ear got hot because of the microwave radiation my ear was absorbing while chatting on the phone. I thought that it was just the battery plus covering my normally heat radiating ear with a phone

1/r2, like every other non-directional free-space radiation pattern.
