jst3p: ninjakirby: If more vocal, political believers practiced their religion

It is my opinion that Christians don't need to be vocal and shouldn't be political.

Then you will forever remain marginalized in the media by the Christians who disagree on that point.

buenohead: So, from what I gather, it is not a matter of needing religion to do good and avoid evil; if you do good and avoid evil, you ARE religious (at least according to this passage).

I pretty much agree with every point you make, and interesting scriptural references. Yeah, I would have a problem with defining 'religious' as 'doing good', but making that point isn't really relevant or productive; we agree in essence.

ShredVicious: They mostly do it in a respectful manner, but sometimes it's difficult in the face of willful ignorance.

I'm respectful so long as I am respected. =p
I'm not an anti-theist, I don't think religion has done more harm than good, I just think many aspects of them are outdated and no longer useful. I do make snarky comments, like the next one rather often though. This is not to be mistaken with hostility.

GilRuiz1: matrygg: Probably because most atheists don't have an agenda, so there's no central atheist organization willing to pony up the lobbying money to get something like this through? I'm just spittballing here...

Lori Lipman Brown, lobbyist for the Secular Coalition of America.

Vocabulary word for the day: Most

Of course, the more hostility is directed towards a group, the more likely they band together under silly group names like "Brights" and "Freethinkers", and start coalitions and shiat. I like my socio-political movement rag-tag and unorganized, thank you very much.

captain_heroic44: I'm proud of who I am, and that's why I'm willing to put it on my license plate. Can't say the same about the atheists. Wonder why that is?

I'm not an atheist. I'm a Catholic. I don't put it on my car because of the TruBluBaptists out there. Last thing I need is somebody like him, or you, deciding I'm not a Christian or that I worship a sun god or somesuch nonsense and refusing to hire me or keying my car.

Galactica Actual: Well, I guess I can be among the first to take that step. "Cool"? No, subby. Not cool at all. You fail. Having a license plate with a cross and the phrase "I Believe" on it is a lot of things, but cool is not one of them. Asinine, yes. Silly, absolutely. I'd even go along with spiffy, since if people want to let God know they love him via license plate it's no skin off my ass. But it's not cool.

/Rant over.

For the record, I'm the submitter, and I submitted this with a "stupid" tag and one of the modmins changed it to "cool" when they greenlit the article.

I think separation of church and state is they way things should be, and I don't think this is OK unless they offer versions for all other religious beliefs, which apparently they will not do until somebody like the ACLU sues them over it.

Actually, I hate all vanity tags and wish they were ALL banned.

The Bone: My brother fit this description (Methodist church). He died last August. I guess it wasn't easy!

Nope, it's not - but good for him for living a life of integrity! I'm sorry for your loss.

The Florida Constitution's 'separation' clause is different from the USConst.'s 1st amendment.

There can be no financial aid--'direct or indirect'--for religioug groups.

I actually think this would be really farking cool if we had a FSM vanity plate. I'd try and find a way to get one even though I live in Texas.

Well you better believe, because let me tell you.

You were born guilty, a sinner. This is because the first humans were Adam and Eve and they disobeyed God's instructions. So pregnancy is painful and you have to believe that Jesus of Nazareth is the son of god himself and is himself a god. Or you will be damned to eternal hellfire.

Original sin is unfair.

It is coercive and manipulative.

If you think Jesus was a wise man, and I believe that he was, then you can learn from his wisdom and follow his instructions to love you neighbor as yourself.

But to say that Jesus was also an immortal god? Or to think that God could be so petty with his grandkids Cain and Abel which was to play a game of favorites which ultimately led to murder? Fratricide? The creator of the earth, the solar system, the universe is a man who is jealous and capricious?

I believe that there is no religion that describes god correctly. I believe that there could be a reason why we are here, but religions have done a poor job describing that reason.

Why do Christians have to tell the entire world they are Christians? I was brought up Catholic, and unless it is relevant to the conversation, I don't bring it up. How about some of these Christian fundies actually practicing what they preach instead of shoving their holiness down other people's throats? A good writer shows and doesn't tell. A good Christian should do the same thing.

Sorry, pissed off at some fundies that I know that have placed complaints at work about a good friend of mine that happens to be gay. This stink is likely to get the guy fired. Fundies need to be sterilized to prevent more like them.

SurfaceTension: ZAZ: Somebody photoshop an "I Want To Believe" version for atheists.

Actually, I'm Atheist and I don't want to believe...I want to Know.

You're not Atheist, you're Agnostic. You know there's a higher power you just don't know what the fark it is.

Jesus is the son of god. He was born through virgin birth by way of Mary. Jesus arrived on earth in a human body, as a Christmas baby.
Jesus lived as a human, stirred the political/religious pot and then was executed. But then he arose because he is an. immortal. god.

So then is it a big sacrifice for an immortal god to come to earth, temporarily take the form of a human being, die painfully but then still persist as a god? He must persist because he must return some time in the future. He told his disciples that he would return in their lifetimes. God doesn't break promises, I don't think. Did god really "give" his son Jesus, or could it be that we just "borrowed" him here on earth for a while before he went home and to sit at the right hand of his father, awaiting his inevitable return.

FTA: It would not be the first religiously toned tag. "In God We Trust" is already a option. "Choose Life SC" will be available in the fall.

This is a fail. "In God we Trust" is certainly religious, but "Choose life" is not. Link (new window)

Promnight_Dumpster_Baby: I plan on keying a pentagram on everyone on of these cars I see.

Only if it's inverted with a goat's head over it. Otherwise, fark you. That will only cause even more shiat to be thrown at us real witches.

This is America kiddies, the land of "Freedom of Speech".... and any real AMERICAN doesn't care what others have on the tag, ya know why? Because you are free to laugh at it and make fun of it all you want. That doesn't give you the right to say they can't have nor any atheist groups either.

That's funny, I had no problem ever getting and keeping a job way back in the day when I was Catholic. Once I became Wiccan, on the other hand...

That s10 with the atheist stickers rocks...

I actually have many of those, and I've always wanted to put the 'Freedom is the distance between church and state' on my vehicle. But I'm afraid some uber-hyper xian zealot on my home town would bust out my windows or something.

It's bad enough the looks I got with my "Cross" = "Swastika" symbol shirt. Althougn mostly it's from those that don't get it and only see the swastika. Hmmph.

Florida already has anti-abortion license plates. Yet no pro-choice ones. Something tells me that there won't be any other religion plates here either.
