Jeebus - one of those swarms was only 10 blocks from my old apartment... I'm pretty sure I wouldn't leave the house for a week if I saw that.

Not quite as scary as the killer bee swarms that constantly put my elementary school in lockdown.

So how many believe that the bees function like a canary in a coal mine, i.e. an early warning that we are screwed? I'm just curious.

/People said the same thing about frogs that turned up with extra limbs and multiple eyes, or some frog species just vanished.

The second massive swarm of thousands of bees has been spotted in the city in just over a week and experts say it's a sign the Big Apple could be overrun by drones this summer.

Then nobody has to worry because honey bee drones don't have stingers.

This is not funny.. When the bees are all dead, the end days are upon us. Happily, I will be 300 Ft underground in my Atlas missile silo, with my hydroponic garden and deep water well, playing COD4 and watching Star Trek re-runs.

Thank god they're not out here. I've been attempting to get rid of 8 years of neglected landscaping that we "inherited" when we bought the house. I can't imagine what I'd have to do to avoid being stung.
On Saturday I was planting a few seedlings and got stung on the ear. There weren't any flowers within 70 feet of me, and I certainly wasn't bothering a hive or anything. So I'm assuming the bee was drunk.

I guess I can be happy that the little punk will drop dead now. But it just makes me wish there was some other (less sting-y) insect that makes honey and pollinates crops.

we_hates: priestrape That movie is the last time I ever give Seinfeld the benefit of the doubt. I wasn't expecting greatness, but jesus that sucked.

It's on a 24-hour loop in our house, so I'm pretty stabby about it, too.

Three lines in the movie, though, give me a chuckle. All, strangely, delivered by Matthew Broderick:

1) When he tastes the crumbcake: "That's so stinging stripey!"

2) When they're learning about job opportunities in the hive: "Can anyone work on the Krelman?" (I have no idea why I like that)

3) Another one where I have no idea why I like it: "THAT BLEW MY MIND!"

Why, yes, I do need to leave the house more often

Sort of on-topic...whatever happened to the giant honeybee extinction scare?? Or was that just the stupid hipster dipshiat cause du jour for a while??

/serious question.

2008-05-19 12:14:13 PM
Selector, that was overblown by mass media. Dieoff in commercial honeybees caused by mites taking advantage of bees being fed on a poor diet (corn syrup.)

Corn syrup ought to be expensive this year, so that'll solve that problem...right?

Sue Dunham: What warmer winter? In Toronto,400 miles away, it was the coldest in many years.

Yes, I'm sure it's Toronto bees that are swarming in NYC, despite NYC having a very warm winter.

*facepalm*

The situation (as far as I know) is still a very serious situation. And, it's not just the bees that are dying. Various reports have noted that other pollenators are dying in alarming numbers. It's a scary situation, because everything they do is integrally linked to not only our survival but the survival of almost every living thing on this planet. :/

Hey, one of my beehives have swarmed once already.

Caught the mothers in my neighbor's tree. Shoved them in a new hive...

Voila! New beehive!

Most of the native honeybees have already died out, so this is likely some farmers swarm. With all the crap the bees have had to put up with the last couple of decades, we're lucky to have ANY bees at all.
