Goldman-Sachs recently adjusted its price forecasting for the rest of the year. It was predicting an average oil price of $141/barrel for the second half of the year. That runs to about $4.75-$5.00/gallon. Start budgeting now.

I like how it seems that the Chinese and Indians have decided to consume 50% more gasoline in, like, a few months.

They must be progressing really fast?

When the fark is Bush finally done. You know, cause the dem's promise that as soon as they get in, they'll lower gas prices. They have a plan, a common sense plan, that they promise they'll deliver as soon as they got control of both houses of congress.

When Bush was first running for president oil was $28 and he criticized the dems for not "jawboning" the arabs into dropping the price.

Now his jaw is sore from getting boned in saudi arabia but the price isn't dropping anytime soon.

I bet you one of the reasons oil costs so much is because big banks and investment houses keep coming out and saying that by year's end, oil will be $200 a barrel.

So people look at that and say, "Gosh, that would be a 75%+ return on investment if I put some money in oil!" So, their money ends up inflating oil futures, which brings about the prediction. Rinse and repeat...

Sure, oil demand is increasing, but how much of this is due to speculation?

I have a plan too - for a really cool stunt; let's line 'em all up, dem's and repub's, and I'll try to jump them with a steamroller.

We're moving 2/3 of the way closer to work in 3 weeks because I'm afraid of gas prices, and I'm typically the one in the household who pays for... well, most things, including gas.

One day a week, my husband and I do not share our our trips due to a scheduling difference on Fridays. I wonder if I can convince my fat ass to bike to work one day a week. Is 12 miles to and from work, city streets, a reasonable trek?

I place the blame of the price of crude on the futures market, but for the price of gas I blame the consumers.

my guess is that oil prices will crash soon. if there were true signs of sustained long term high prices, more expenisve oil processing, like from shale, would be in full swing, as it would be economically feasible to invest the money in doing it.

You can buy a cheap bike for what it costs to fill up a tank now. Sure it means you'll have to exercise and your hair might get ruffled, but you might bump into that chick in the picture above, plus extend your lifespan. As much we all love Samuel L, there is a dog damn thing you can do about it.

We should all be honest with ourselves. None of us here actually understands the international oil and gasoline markets. It's pretty clear given the comments made here. All we can point to are companies making 11-figure profits in a quarter and say "HEY! You're farking us!".

That's about it, really.

seminole87: Mexico produces a surplus of oil, unlike the U.S.

You cant tell me that the mexicans wouldnt put every drop of surplus oil on the world market and be getting the world price on it. The population in mex cant afford U.S. prices and their economy would be really in the crapper, so the price is 2.42/gal its what it will support. The fuel might not be as clean as the blend here but wtf. Believe me if there is a buck to be made the mexicans would be all on it..

I've often wondered how much oil & gas we could save if everyone just used some common sense on the road:

1. Slow down. Why are you in such a damn hurry anyway?
2. Stop commuting with an 8-cylinder engine. I know big engines are needed for big jobs, but a Ford Expedition isn't necessary for commuting.
3. Don't let your car idle for 20 minutes while you're picking up your kid at daycare.
4. Park and go into the fast-food joint instead of idling for another 20 minutes in the drive-thru line.
5. Carpool, goddammit.
6. If the errand you're running is within six blocks, and no heavy cargo is involved either way, walk or bike.

Realistically, the only thing that'll force people to change their driving habits is expensive gas. So good on it.

Trade your SUV and get an economy car. I drive one of those small vehicles pictured in an earlier post. Believe me, it will make life so much easier. Also, live as close as possible to work. Money in the bank is better than a McMansion any day.

Anyways, I'm amazed that the way we waste energy that gas was as cheap as it was for so long.

BLR: One day a week, my husband and I do not share our our trips due to a scheduling difference on Fridays. I wonder if I can convince my fat ass to bike to work one day a week. Is 12 miles to and from work, city streets, a reasonable trek?

Sure. There are plenty of articles online on commuting. I biked my commute ride in one weekend to see how it was, the lights, the road, etc. Ended up changing my route a bit after one section of road was too crappy to ride on.

What I've done is to keep some clothing at work for my ride in days. I wear shorts for my commute and need a decent pair of pants and a shirt to be able to change into. On some days I'll wear shorts/T all day depending on what I'm doing.

If your city has mass transit you might be able to bike part way in then take the bus the rest. I do that on iffy days and it's a nice backup to have in the event the weather turns nasty.

That must explain why Saudi Arabia just refused to increase oil production because "demand didn't warrant an increase."

Ample supply at $20 / barrel
Ample supply at $120 / barrel

I guess global demand has gone up more than 600% in the last 8 years? Yeah, right.

Go back to class.

You know what's gonna happen soon - people are gonna start buying up gas in large quantities and hoarding it and maybe reselling it at just over cost as prices rise.

/too lazy to do it myself
//for now

2008-05-18 10:55:33 AM
The simple fact is that we need it and will pay whatever they tell us to pay. Gas is $3.69 right here, and the other day my daughter told me, "I remember when gas was $2.75." Sure we biatched about $2.75 gas but a year from now we'll be longing for the $3.69 days.

As a question, have you heard at all about the tar sands in Alberta? It's one of those more expensive forms of oil reclamation, and both the companies and the Canadian government have been dumping money into expansion for years, with more planned for at least the next 5.

High oil prices are here to stay.

Holodigm: oil prices are making me racist against the chinese and indians

Yep, it's like trying to get tickets to the Superbowl, or anything else that is in demand. Price goes up. No money down and ARM loans drove home prices up because more people competing for homes. Now its harder to get a loan, so less demand for homes, so home prices drop. Simple supply and demand. Buy a Ford Focus or most other 4 cylinder cars and have less fill ups.

Didn't you know that Chinese and Indian people just started driving eight years ago?

That explains why all of the talking heads tell us that prices are based upon futures while historical data is always the culprit when it comes time for an explanation for actual prices.

Again, either no one actually knows what they're talking about or no one wants to say what's really happening.
