If Ted Stevens is against it, it must be a good thing.

2008-05-15 11:09:52 AM
I'm not happy about them being endangered either.

2008-05-15 11:10:56 AM
He's just pissed because he can't build a bridge to see them.

2008-05-15 11:11:00 AM
Quick! Everyone send Ted Stevens an internet and tell him to STFU.

2008-05-15 11:12:04 AM
will the bears now get stuck in the big tubes?

2008-05-15 11:12:09 AM
Drunked up?

2008-05-15 11:12:21 AM
They all died from drinking Coca Cola and eating fishbiscuits. The polar bear equivalent of diet soda and Mentos.

Sleeping Monkey: If Ted Stevens is against it, it must be a good thing.

Maybe he'll get so upset he'll have a massive stroke and will never be able to come out of his oil-company built house.

We can float the bears on tubes!!

Imagine that, Environmentalists (aka liberals) distorting facts and using fear mongering for political gain! Gee Golly, that's never happened before!

I believe a polar bear can eat a snowmobile - and the drunk Alaskan on it.

jimibrooks: Drunked up?

I guess it's what happens after one drinked up 2 or 3 six packs.

Comments like this make me want to punch babies. You know that Pork-Barrel bridge-to-nowhere plan for Ketchikan that everyone likes to mouth-breathe over in regards to Stephens´ pork? It´s a bridge to an international airport, which is always conveniently left out. Ted Stevens is a fine senator, and the only thing keeping Alaska´s infrastructure from abjectly falling apart.

/I side with the locals, in regards to domestic politics

getting drunked up and chasing them on snowmobiles

I pictured a polar bear riding a snowmobile, and chortled.

I love every time Ted Stevens talks. He is the "Joker" of our empire. Unfortunately he also has some power.

2008-05-15 11:17:46 AM
Quick everyone! Stop sending pictures of polar bears to each other over the Internet! They're getting stuck in the tubes!

fta via Stevens- "Scientists have observed that there are now three times as many polar bears in the Arctic than there were in the 1970s."

Anyone know where the source of this info may have come from?

Sounds like a report from the Making Crap Up University Department of Science offhand, but hey, I'm willing to see the bibliography.

2008-05-15 11:19:38 AM
threatened doesn't exactly mean endangered.

2008-05-15 11:20:22 AM
Polar bears aren't endangered. There's an etimated 20K+ of them running around up there. The whole thing is based on what could possibly happen to the habitat assuming the ice melts over the next 50 years.

2008-05-15 11:20:39 AM
If I remember correctly, the call them Snow Machines in Alaska, and they get a little stabby if you call it a snowmobile.
Maybe not stabby, but you'll get the "outsider" sneer.

At least that's how I remembered it when I lived up there.

/I could be wrong
//I drank a lot more back then

They were listed as "threatened" not "endangered". Two different things.

"This is the California extreme environmentalists who've decided to use the polar bear as an example of global warming. They're gonna say this is global warming. It has nothing to do with global warming. This is a concept called climate change. It is a concept of a process that's been going on for years....This species is not endangered."

Thats funny, cause I thought global warming WAS climate change.

The ice is melting now. If it keeps melting at this rate, then yes in 50 years the bears and lots of other critters will have serious problems.

Ted Stevens sucks donkey balls. He is an oil company whore. Along with Frank "the skank" murkowski, his daughter and oh yea Don I shoot caribou oout of season Young.

So the fact that he takes bucketful of cash from oil lobbiests, was one of the three senators who voted "NO" on the "US won't torture people" bill and doesn't know what the internet was, while CHAIRMAN OF THE TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE, is ok?

2008-05-15 11:24:38 AM
1972-polar bear population, 5000 = threatened
2008-polar bear population, 25000 = endangered

dude, WTF

don't you know that polar bears are the most dangerous member of the animal kingdom?

2008-05-15 11:26:29 AM
The beauty of marking polar bears as threatened is that now you can use the endangered species laws to stop any kind of industrial activity anywhere in the world (where the law applies, of course ;-)). Anything that can be argued to contribute to global warming is a danger to the polar bears! OMG! Time to ban cars.

You thought oil was expensive now, didn't you? Just wait...

...and there's a ferry that runs every 30 minutes- 15 during tourist season.

Look, I'm from Boston. You wanna talk congressionally funded transportation boondoggles, I'm your girl. But you don't see me defending Tip O'Neil.

Excen: It´s a bridge to an international airport, which is always conveniently left out.

IIRC, It's a bridge to an international airport that is currently being adequately serviced by a ferry system. As catchy of a moniker as a "bridge to nowhere" is, the problem was not so much the bridge's destination as it was the bridge's superfluousness combined with cost.

2008-05-15 11:30:45 AM
"The problem isn't too serious right now. Sure, it's heading that way, but that's like 50 years away. We don't need to even think about this for at least 40 or 45 years, right?"

Nice logic, Alaskans.
What's the saying about an ounce of prevention?

2008-05-15 11:31:46 AM
I don't usually get "drunked up" I get drunk and well the chasing polar bears part it's aight, but got old after I found out that they can kill you. Go figure

Heh. I'm originally from Alaska, and I'm really enjoying this.

I actually did go to high school with someone from one of the interior villages. And yes, she told me stories about people getting drunk and doing such odd things, like running out of alcohol and drinking rubbing alcohol, mouthwash, and antifreeze. Idiots...

vernonFL - The ice is melting now. If it keeps melting at this rate, then yes in 50 years the bears and lots of other critters will have serious problems.

That's a big if though. There must be far better ways to go about achieving the overall goal. Putting polar bears on the endangered list is nothing more than a pre-emptive strike to what might happen.

AK, you need to seriously impose term limits.
These two jokers have been AK's congressman during my entire lifespan so far.

Ahh, Fishbiscuits. The highlight of the past 3 seasons of Lost.

Wasn't there a report the other day that Polar Bear numbers were up? I may be mistaken about that, but this whole "their habitat is shrinking" so they must be all dead or dying reasoning is a little soft.

2008-05-15 11:39:37 AM
It protects the bears from hunting, so I'm all for it.

BobtheFascist: That's a big if though. There must be far better ways to go about achieving the overall goal

Not really. Whether global warming is caused by humans or nature is debatable, what is not debatable is that it is occuring.

But you are right - just putting them on the endandered list isn't going to solve the larger problem of their habitat being destroyed.
