Some woman here did that years ago, only she did such a good job at gaining sympathy her co-workers starting raising money for her and it was all over the news, eventually unraveling her lies, so we took her to the field and ritually mu.., er talked to her.

Seriously, though, if you ever want every single person to hate you, do this.

I'm curious, would this actually classify as Münchhausen, but without the "by Proxy" part? Or would she have to fish for sympathy?

wow. thats a sickie and a half.

/in aus, a sickie is a day taken off work, generally spurious illness related. often tied in to sporting events. see also 'pulling a sickie'.
//not sure if term used elsewhere. some farker (or, if grumpy, snarker), will enlighten me no doubt:)

Girl Wonder came back from phase 4 Osteosarcoma (pops) that pretty much had the Docs telling her to take regular mud baths so she'd get used to laying in dirt. She has a hip prosthetic that doesn't look like a medical device so much as a melee weapon (pops). And a good amount of cadaver femur grafted to her to make up for the cancerous femur they removed. So technically every time we hit the sheets it's a three-way.

I don't know where I'm going with this, it's just cancer related... and weird.

Definitely true.

I knew a girl who found out her husband was cheating on her with a 16 year old girl. He divorced her and left her with the 5 year old and didn't pay child support. She eventually found out he was living with the 16 year old and her parents. This drove her over the edge. She faked cancer and even went as far as shaving her head, faking hospital visits etc.... After her fake recovery, she came clean due to the overwhelming guilt I guess.

Aside from that, she was very cute, played video games, and was overall a very nice person. I have no idea why the husband even strayed, but he did..... thus turning her into an attention whore monster...

Women are crazy.

FTFY. Don't be painting with too wide a brush, now. You men still have Dahmer and Manson to answer for, never mind several millenia of good ol' armed conflict.

Reminds me of 2 stories. One is about a person my sister worked with when she was a waitress, who claimed that her mother was sick & that she had to take off tons of time to take care of her, drive her to the doctors, the whole ten yards. People donated time & even passed around a collection bucket for her & raised quite a chunk of change for her (even got some of the regulars to donate as well), money that a lot of those people really could've used for themselves. Come to find out, she was lying the entire time & was using the money to buy booze & drugs for her boyfriend & herself.

The other one I remember is about a woman who lied to everyone about her kid having leukemia. That's bad enough, but she also convinced the kid that she was going to die. Instead of taking her for chemo, the mom drugged the kid, drove around for a few hours, & then shaved the kid's head. The little girl (who was about 9-12) was getting counceled on accepting her death, all the while the mom was raking in money from charities, churches, & various donation jars placed throughout the area. I wish I could remember who the woman was. I'd heard that she went to jail, so I'd love to read that she got the crap beaten out of her.

Ah... here's a news link to the story.

It's pretty disturbing. (pops)

Although it's not nearly as bad as the woman who was poisoning her 4 year old for the attention. I really think that people with Munchausen's Syndrome should get the death penalty. Then they'll get all the attention that they want.

I'm gonna have to back him up. When you're dog tired, and she wants sex... it's HARD. I've fallen asleep during, once. Of course she got mad, and I'm thinking "you knew I was exhausted, why did you keep pestering me?" That was my ex-GF whose attitude seemed to be "you have to be a sex machine when I want it, and don't bother me when you want it".

As noted by others above, this is not a "new" tactic. In the late 70s a guy where I worked had the same thing happen to him. He came to work with all these horror stories about money problems etc because of his wife's cancer. It went on and on....she never had it.

You got me on Dahmer, but Charlie was a bad example. His mom totally molded that kid into a freak. Just one example.

from wiki:
Young Manson's mother, allegedly a heavy drinker, once sold him for a pitcher of beer to a childless waitress, from whom his uncle retrieved him some days later

/I get your point though

No Such Agency: When you're dog tired, and she wants sex... it's HARD. I've fallen asleep during, once. Of course she got mad, and I'm thinking "you knew I was exhausted, why did you keep pestering me?"

As a pester-er, I have to admit that my husband's most effective way to stymie my efforts is to roll over onto his stomach to go to sleep. He's bigger than me, and while I know ways to turn someone over and hold them - they're not erotic, they can be 'uncomfortable', and how likely am I to get some lovin' after those exertions?

Nope, not worth it. See you in the morning, hon.

I worked with a woman who faked having cancer. Didn't know her very well but she'd been an employee for a while, had gotten a gastric bypass while working there, and I guess had gotten used to all the attention from her surgery and subsequent weight loss. When that wore off and nobody was paying attention to her anymore, she said she had cancer.

Never really said what kind, just that it was bad and that she was getting treatment for it. She'd call up coworkers at 9 or 10 PM crying and asking them to bring her soup, and they would because they felt bad for her. People who knew about different types of cancers from their family and friends having had them asked her questions, and asked about where she was going for treatment, and never got a straight answer. She shaved her head and started wearing scarves over it to hide the fact that she was getting stubble as it grew back.

Eventually she got caught out and about one day when she was supposed to be going in for treatment. People had been getting suspicious as it was, but after that, and some questions that she avoided and then contradicted herself on, it all came tumbling down around her.

Turned out she'd done it both for the attention... and to cover up the fact that she'd shoplifted thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from the business.

You gotta be pretty farked up to try pulling something like that... but it happens pretty damn often.

I knew a woman who was a total hypochondriac. Talked herself into having all kinds of illnesses to get attention. Then she got brain cancer and died a year later.

Be careful what you wish for.

Juniper Jupiter: I'm curious, would this actually classify as Münchhausen, but without the "by Proxy" part? Or would she have to fish for sympathy?

Munchhausens (no little dots here, sorry)would be more along the lines of someone intentionally producing symptoms in order to gain sympathy. Link (new window)

Munchhausen by proxy would be a parent causing their child to exhibit symptoms in order to gain sympathy.

There's not a whole lot of info in the linked article, but it's a good guess that this woman was just malingering, or saying she had it. If it was Munchhausens she would have actually had some sort of symptom and probably would of had a real doctor's note.

/thank's Dr. House
//great episode btw

My ex did this just before we got divorced. She was telling everyone she had cancer that was spreading like wildfire and was going to take her out in like 6 weeks. Claimed to have gotten surgeries and treatments but wouldn't let me assist her or accompany her to any of the treatments because I was hurting her by having a close relationship with a female friend who's husband really was dying from brain cancer. She even asked his advice about radiation and treatment options.

My ex went so far as to start cutting herself on her wrists as well... even took a razor knife and slashed her throat twice right in front of me. The cuts didn't go deep enough to hit anything vital and I did finally get her to give me the knife, but talk about screwed up situation.

Her brother and a couple of friends did some investigating and found out that she was lying about the whole cancer thing and confronted her... she eventually admitted to faking it and crying how she got in so deep to the lies that she didn't know how to get out of it.

This must not be a rare thing. One of my classmates, who is about 44 or so, is claiming she has cancer. this is the third type of cancer she claims she's had. We took some personality tests in one class, and she scored tops in narcissistic and histrionic personality disorders. She plans to become a counselor. Scary.
