"It was an accident," Fussell said. "I'm fine. I don't have any problems."

...other than a hole in his foot, living in floriduh, and poor grammer - yeah, no problems.

2002-11-20 01:03:46 PM
"Fussell, 64, doesn't know where his sneaker went. He said he doesn't remember what he was doing with his gun when he shot his foot."

whatever

"The Glock, Fussell's off-duty weapon, does not have a safety.

hmmmmmmm. wonder what could have happened.

"He was doing well," Goodwin said. "Those Glocks are just really tricky."

his finger crossed the trigger-guard, and he shot himself in the foot...because he didn't have a safety.

Bump, that was damn quick, I have it on my clipboard, so here it is again...
""It was an accident," Fussell said. "I'm fine. I don't have any problems.""
;)

That sounds like the artist who painted himself in a corner.

i believe this was an accident. for the love of all things holy do NOT put your finger on the trigger unless you wish to destroy your target.

read target: foot

"he doesn't remember what he was doing with his gun when he shot his foot"

Aside from pulling the trigger, what's to remember?

Given that, at 64, he undoubtedly carried a DA revolver for good portion of his carrier, the concept of handling a fire arm with out a safety should not be foreign and certainly not "tricky".

"The Glock, Fussell's off-duty weapon, does not have a safety."

Bullshot. Every Glock has 3 safeties.
1) The trigger safety. The trigger is a two-piece, segmented trigger. Unless you hit both parts, the gun won't fire.

2) Internal firing pin safety

3) Internal drop safety

I've owned and shot Glock products for years, and I have never had an accidental discharge. I've dropped em, smacked em, slapped em, and generally abused the hell out of them...and they don't fire by themselves.

Bottom line: Don't put your farking finger in the trigger guard and it won't go off.

2002-11-20 02:09:39 PM
Glocks do have a safety, it's just on the trigger. I know, it sounds stupid.

2002-11-20 02:13:20 PM
What he said. Glocks are actually extremely safe weapons, but take a little getting used to. I learned gun safety on a Glock 19, and have never had an accidental discharge, like the poster above.

2002-11-20 02:14:13 PM
Blech...one more comment:
"Those Glocks are just really tricky."

No, they aren't. Glocks are perhaps the most user friendly guns in the world... A trained monkey could learn to shoot with a Glock. And they do...I see it all the time in Philly. :-)

2002-11-20 02:15:09 PM
Damn these tricky Glocks!

Why the fvck should I have to watch where my trigger finger is placed?

I'm not a magician or trained seal!

Enough with these tricks, you Glock bastards.

2002-11-20 02:17:21 PM
Forget gun control; we need dumbass control!

2002-11-20 02:17:31 PM
Well, tricky in the sense that my three year old nephew could shoot one.

Whoa, scary thought.

2002-11-20 02:20:19 PM
Intentionally Left Blank: I've been saying that for years.

2002-11-20 02:21:44 PM
Why no Florida tag?

2002-11-20 02:22:34 PM
"Fussell has been a Florida Highway Patrol trooper for 30 years. He was taking his biannual firearms qualification exam when he shot himself.

well I should hope he failed.

Fussell shot himself before finishing the qualification exam, so he will have to retake it

Oh so he didn't FAIL, he just didn't finish because he had a hole in his foot.
It is FLORI-DUH after all.

2002-11-20 02:23:35 PM
For his retirement party his co-workers and friends should give him kevlar sneakers. If there are such a thing.

2002-11-20 02:25:53 PM
Maybe he shot his foot on purpose. I know that my big toe mocks me all the time. Always taunting me, shouting obscenities whenever I take off my socks. That rat bastard, if I had a gun I would shoot my toe, the prick.

Oh, 2:30 already. Time to take my meds.

2002-11-20 02:26:49 PM
you probably get to retake the drivers exam after you wreck the car too.....what a bunch of idiots....keep him at a desk for te next seven months and boot him!!

2002-11-20 02:27:51 PM
Squidloe-

You aren't crazy, I hate that prick toe of yours, too.

2002-11-20 02:37:14 PM
Take that, yellow nails!

2002-11-20 02:46:44 PM
Fussell, 64, doesn't know where his sneaker went. He said he doesn't remember what he was doing with his gun when he shot his foot.

I can clear that up for you, Van. You were pulling the trigger. Because that's the only way to get a Glock to fire. And this 'no safety' business on a Glock is misleading. There are three internal safeties inherent in the gun's design. That's what makes a trigger pull absolutely the only way for it to fire. It's a much better way to go, IMO, since there's no chance of forgetting to click off a safety in a tense situation. You just have to make sure you keep your finger off the trigger until it's time to shoot, which is a good practice no matter what firearm you're using.

2002-11-20 03:01:46 PM
jeez ...cant vote, cant shoot, cant drive, what is it with florida?

2002-11-20 03:07:21 PM
Sounds like he left his finger on the trigger while holstering his weapon. Rudimentary gun safety should have prevented this, but no, let's blame the gun. Figures, being from Venice.

2002-11-20 03:08:52 PM
The only safety mechanism this guy needs to worry about is the defective one between his ear's.

2002-11-20 03:30:49 PM
Sounds like Barney needed a wee bit more practice than a "biannual" exam affords.

2002-11-20 03:40:24 PM
SO...I emailed the author of the story regarding her statement that the Glock has no safety. Her response was as follows:

"To the laymen, the Glock does not have a safety feature. I've shot Glocks before, so I'm familiar with them. Thanks for the input, Kelly Cramer"

How nice. If the layman believes a Glock doesn't have a safety, it doesn't. Ok. I'm a layman. I'm gonna go believe my way into being a millionaire.

FHP commander shoots self in foot at firing range

Why does a men's magazine have commanders and firing ranges?

"To the laymen, the Glock does not have a safety feature. I've shot Glocks before, so I'm familiar with them. Thanks for the input, Kelly Cramer"

Litig8r , perhaps you should email Ms. Cramer again and remind her that as a reporter it is her job to convey accurate information, not perpetuate fallacies.

In my experience Glocks have hair triggers, so his finger probably dragged across the guard and tapped it on the "out" of the holster somehow. He must have squeezed the handle some way. Not a good way to hold it when putting it away.

I think Glocks are great guns. Especially with glow in the dark sights! I live in FL (native), but I have never seen or heard of any shooting accidents at any of the ranges I go to.

Except for one time I heard about a guy who brought steel buckshot into the firing range. That makes for a quick uproar!

Since we're on the topic I might as well troll it (but I am sincere) ...

GUNS don't kill people by themselves. People have to carry the act out. If it's not a gun then it would be some other weapon, or maybe none at all. Ask yourself - would you rather be shot to death, with a relatively quick ending perhaps, or endure a severe beating or stabbing until you were choked or bled to death? I think I would take the bullets, preferably. Further, violent criminals are not the people who go buy a legal firearm, register it in their name, take a concealed weapons course, and then go hold up a liquor store (or practice at a firing range typically).

So gun control really won't affect violent crime the way that people hope it would. Take a look at Australia : they had a violent shooting spree a few years ago, and their heavy handed government decides to take ALL guns away (afaik) from the people. The next year, their violent crime went up something like 300 percent. The change in law dared the criminals to be more aggressive.

Gun control advocates: Did you know Swiss homes have assault rifles and grenades as mandated by the government? Take a look at _their_ crime rates in comparison. Thugs want easy marks. Now for a final cliche - politicians prefer unarmed peasants to armed citizens!

(No, I am not a member of the NRA!)

BASIC fire arms saftey from a bb gun to a paintball gun to a 50 cal macine gun, NEVER EVER EVER put your finger on the trigger unless you intend to fire it, end of story. This guy was a moron and hopefully had his weapon taken away until he can be reviewed by superiors and should be given a revolver with a 5lb pull when he does get the authority to have a gun again. The glock is totally safe if you dont pull the trigger, A hammer does not have a saftey mechanism but if you drop one on your foot or hit yourself in the head it will injure you DUH! This accident is inline with "accidentally" shooting somebody because you were not watching where you were pointing your gun, basic stuff

now what did i tell a you dumb motherfarkers about
glocks about a year ago glocks are junk thats what i said i know what i said because i was there

Nice grammar Captin, this isn't AIM. The readability of your post would vastly improve if you would at least capitalize the beginning of your sentences, even If you don't have enough self respect to capitalize I. Puntuation is also helpful. Anyway off my grammar nazi soapbox, and onto another. I would hardly consider a glock's trigger to be a 'hair trigger', it is plenty heavy maybe a bit mushy but not too light. All you people who dis Glocks probably want people to buy Sigs and HKs, I would love to have either of those pistols but I can't justify the extra $200 in terms of quality or performance gains. For the price, Glocks are a deal. That stupid biach reporter should be a little more concerned with the credability of her profession, it's one thing to make a mistake, it's another to actively bias a story.

"Fussell shot himself before finishing the qualification exam, so he will have to retake it"

Bwahahahahaha!!!!

Reminds me of the shop teacher I had in junior high. He was teaching a course in gun/hunting safety in spite of the fact he had blown his own leg off while hunting.

MonK3yWr3nch :
"dis Glocks probably want people to buy Sigs and HKs, "
No as they are junk too buy a s&w or ruger .
They are cheaper and a better gun than glock .
Now back to the poetic justice piont .
Is your argument so week that all you can do is
wine about my grammer.

2002-11-20 09:31:36 PM
Glocks, Sigs and H&Ks are junk...riiiight.

Funny thing is, quite a few people that I know and that have earned my respect, demonstrated their knowledge of firearms and rely on those brands professionally, would be criticizing more than your grammar. But hey everyone is entitled to their opinion, even one as malformed as yours. Heck S&W and Ruger are decent firearms, so whatever.

2002-11-20 10:21:19 PM
ok pegleg you got a piont about sigs and hk's but they are over priced but glocks are junk little more than a paper weight.

2002-11-21 03:58:25 AM
Ahhhh, I get it now Captin, you just hate foreign guns. Well, S&W and Ruger are quality US manufacturers, I own a couple Rugers. I have shot plenty of different pistols and I still like glocks the best for the price, do you just hate all polymer pistols or is it something else?

2002-11-21 07:05:27 PM
i hate all consealed hammer pistols
