(Yahoo)   Cigarette vending machines in Japan may soon start counting wrinkles, crow's feet and skin sags to see if the customer is old enough to smoke. Suck it, Botox   (news.yahoo.com) divider line 93

Self-fulfilling, since cigarette smoking leads to wrinkles, crow's feet and skin sags.

Last I heard, a lot of facial recognition software can be fooled with a pretty simple mask.

Oh Japan, is there no thing so minute and uncomplicated that your technology can't solve? From on the fly crap scanning, to used panty vending machines nothing is beyond your grasp. Bravo, Japan, bravo.

But since the Japanese age so well, does that mean you'll have to be 50 in order to buy cigarettes from those machines?

2008-05-12 06:54:12 PM
Very easy to fool if all it needs is to "see" your face. Just put a hand close to your face in an irregular manner and you've got "wrinkles".

There's already been a case in Japan of a high school kid trying to shoplift some cigarettes because he couldn't buy them from the vending machines anymore.

Why don't they just embed people's IDs with a swipe strip encoded with their age, and have readers on the machines?

/bah, is any of this worth the effort?

i was walking past one of them vending machines yesterday night, and out of a sudden it started talking to me. "would you like a cool refreshment? or maybe some hot coffee". it was loud, annoying and it was like 2AM. the neighbours must be loving it.

I've said this many times and I'll say it again - we need to make cigarettes more widely available. I think we should subsidize them as well, buy one pack, get two packs unfiltered free. I would only put two conditions on this generosity - 1. smokers cannot smoke near non smokers or indoors 2. smokers are not allowed any access to the public health system.
In a short amount of time the problem would solve itself, and we wouldn't have to have these stupid threads about smokers. Social Darwinism, FTW!
There are some people who think the government should just steadily increase taxes on cigarettes until few people smoke, but I don't like this approach for 3 reasons:
1. On a moral level, the government should not be profiting from selling drugs.
2. On a practical level, as you increase taxes, you get to a point where you have law enforcement problems related to smuggling.
3. You miss out on an opportunity to get weak people with addictive tendencies out of the gene pool.

Except that most of the people that smoke don't die from smoking, so your whole evil genius theory kind of falls apart.

4. You are an idiot who thinks everyone who smokes is either addicted to them or has addictive tendencies.

The ability to buy Cigarettes from Vending Machines was one of the greatest things ever. As soon as I would get off the train and walk no more than 15 feet I'd find a cigarette vending machine. It also was nice that they were 2.50 a pack and had Mild Sevens, which is the 3rd biggest brand in the world but almost impossible to find in the US (or at least in Philadelphia).

It would be much better to have this face system than a Drivers licence system (especially for Gaijin like myself).

When I was in Japan a friend noticed a sign on the beer vending machine that said in English that beer was not to sold after 10:00pm and it had a clock showing that it was 10:01pm... so coins were put in the machine and cold beer was properly dispenses and there was much rejoicing. A little told lady came out of the house a few doors down and gave us a nasty look while pretending to sweep the sidewalk.

Smokers cost less to the health system than non smokers because they die faster and don't require long term medication as they age.

Those who do not care for others are of no use to society.

Weak people with "addictive tendancies" are often the most creative people.

You would prefer a worl in which there was no Alice in Wonderland or Van Goht (spelt wrong yeah I know).

You FAIL as a human being.

Wow, you'Re such a douche bag I'll answer you a second time.

RE: 1) smokers cannot smoke near non smokers

1) Person who drive cars emitting fine particulate matter cannot drive them anywhere near pedestrians

RE: 2) smokers are not allowed any access to the public health system.

2) Anyone who's BMI is outside the norm is not allowed any access to the public health care system

3) Holy crap, most people who suck as hard as you do do it much more intelligently

Just wait untill the kids starts tying onions to their belts in order to fool the machine.

Great Grandpa would roll his own cigarettes with tobacco that he grew himself all the while warning me away from the adulterated tobacco in cigarettes... "poison" he said.

Tobacco is a wonderful plant, use it with good effect for you health.
