GreenSun: Wow no casualties yet? That's pretty impressive since I've experienced a similar earthquake with the same power a long time ago, and there were literally thousands of people who died, crushed by buildings.

...must be true. China is renowned for its free independent press

felt it too here in Beijing. Didn't really think much about it since we get a few minor ones a year. Can't believe it was all the way in Sichuan. That's thousands of miles away. Hope those people are all right. IIRC it's China's most populous province.

technically, shouldn't it be "global pressure" ?

dead.poet: we were rocking and rolling here at my place 850 miles east of chengdu

Was Chengdu at the epicenter? It didn't feel like I'd imagine a 7.6. The damage here was minimal (at least in my bike around the city), but it was a helluva ride.

2008-05-12 04:35:41 AM
Regarding this, the USGS has this at a 7.8, and occuring just over 6 miles below the surface. Thank you, Reuters, for botching this story.

Also, an aftershock just hit in the last hour or so from this posting. 5.4. Same depth.

Chaon: Should they be able to feel the quake from that far away?

an earthquake of magnitude 7.8? Yeah that can be felt 1,000 miles away, how much though depends on a few factors.

C'mon, guys... Does "graphic aftermath of an execution .... .... ak 47" imply anything other than what the link went to?

WhyteRaven74: And what do you know, there's already a wikipedia entry for the quake (pops)

I love the map of the epicenter, apparently the quake's center was roughly 1/2 the size of India.

Chaon: I don't know much about earthquakes, but Bangkok has got to be over a thousand miles from Chengdu. Should they be able to feel the quake from that far away?

I'm in Bangkok right now, I didn't feel it and no one I've talked to has either. Maybe people in really tall buildings could though.

2008-05-12 05:20:26 AM
I'm still in Zhengzhou, about 500km from Chengdu - we go about a 1.5 shock here.

Classes were cancelled.

bargled: I love the map of the epicenter, apparently the quake's center was roughly 1/2 the size of India.

that square is something the USGS uses on all their maps, the size of the square is directly related to the intensity of the quake. So really big quakes, get a really big square.

Just about to unlock my bike here in Chengdu, hey why is the wheel shaking, hey why am I shaking, oh it's an earthquake. Thought one this big would be more intense. Just finished reading "A crack in the edge of the world" by Simon Winchester, last week. Good book, but maybe now I won't read his book about Krakatoa.

Interesting how many Beijing Farkers there are and how there are those who had a lot different experiences.

I'm guessing it was not much of a sudden shock but a roller that impacted the taller structures.

I bet the rest of the world felt the same way you did when Jesse Owens was sittin right in the face of Hitler...even still the respect was apparent in the crowd...

I dont like how China is moving...they're half light half shadow but I still wanna see the athletes get their chance at World Gold...I'll just have to move human rights and sovereignty of nations to the front rather than the back of my mind this summer.

----

Also..do we have any biological scientists who can tell me what effect huge earthquakes have on polluted cities ?? I see L.A. and say no change but Beijing is a lil bit different?? Any ionization of carbon molecules in the air or something like that??

We'll need every little edge we can get because this is shaping up to be the Olympics with the worst environmental atmosphere in the history of our beautiful Creators planets Olympics..haha...

I'm not saying anything but its nothing like America. For me at least.

I didn't even feel it, but all communication to Chengdu (or any hard-hit area really) is cut off.

I should add, on a serious note, I do hope everybody makes it out alive, though with a seriously lax building code there will unfortunately be fatalities. At the very least China's leadership should respond much better than those asshats in Myanmar.

Can anyone please please tell me what the name of this movie is? I have been trying to remember the name of it for years. Maybe even a decade. IIRC, this dude is the one who uses paint/brushes as a weapon and is defeated by two brothers who team up in an awesome shoulder-standing stance.

Please help!

and I'm an idiot, because that is Lo Pan from big trouble in little china. dur.
